The Fire From Within

The Fateful Ordeal

Do you know that feeling when you wake up, that confusion, the indisposition that doesn't want to let you get out of bed and go to work? That lack of will that just holds you back, slows you down and makes you think maybe you're just not good enough?

Perhaps you are one of the lucky ones, those who were born with a faster metabolism and have an infinite disposition to do anything. But even then, beyond that, maybe your feelings hold you back: a lack of confidence, insecurity/doubt, anxiety, depression even, all those things that are in the way for you to finally accomplish those goals you set out to do and later just gave up, again and again.

If you relate to any of that...

Please, allow me to share my experience with those feelings
and how I'm finally learning to overcome them.

About three years ago, in 2018, I was in a dark place. I had broken up with my fiance at the time, my company was hemorrhaging money, the entire Brazilian economy was about to collapse and I had lost all expectations in life... I was in a crisis...

By then I thought "when you've hit rock bottom, the only way is up!", so I instinctively started to search for ways to restructure myself and to slowly build the rocket-ship that would take me out of the hole I was in.

  • For more on the topic of "rock bottom" I recommend two of the posts I came across when researching for this post:

The Beauty Of Hitting Rock Bottom || Why Starting From The Lowest Point Can Bring The Greatest Change
— by @surfermarly

12 Reasons Why Hitting Rock Bottom Is The Best Thing That Can Ever Happen To You

— by Lyndelle Palmer Clarke from Dailygreatness

But I don't wanna dabble with this topic too much, this is an optimistic post, my focus is on telling you how I got out and why I think what I discovered is awesome!!

What Doesn't Kill You...

I actually don't remember how it came to my knowledge, I only remember the day I decided to try it out. Perhaps you've already heard of it, it's the Wim Hof Method. But what is it exactly?

The WHM is a series of physical and psychological exercises that stimulate certain physiological processes in our bodies that nowadays, due to our overly comfortable lives, lay dormant, because they aren't used most of the time. But it is a potential that activated can grant you disposition, confidence and even better your immune system!

It is based on three pillars:

Breathing
Breathing is usually something we put little to no effort thinking over, but it is a powerful tool if used correctly. The WHM helps to increase the oxygen intake of your cells, potentiating your strength, giving you more energy, reduced levels of stress and even enhancing your immune system, helping it deal with pathogens with more efficacy.

Cold Therapy
Getting exposed to cold, being it a cold shower or a shirtless walk during winter, activates your thermoregulatory system, the most energy costly system in the body, resulting in fat loss, and also helps you balance hormone levels, giving you the proper energy when awake and a better sleep at night, not mentioning the endorphins released, making you feel great!

Commitment

This is the basis for the other two. Patience and mental strength, to exercise your willpower to commit to the other two with regularity, with discipline, is of paramount importance. This exercise helps you gain focus and determination, being able to put mind over body, able to overcome your most basic instincts, like the fear of cold.

These exercises work in synchronicity with one another, they constitute a positive reinforcement cycle, so the more you practice, the better you become at it, the easier it gets, the better the results.

...Make You Stronger

I have been practicing it for 3 years now. Of course I didn't start being disciplined and liking it very much. It is hard! But it's supposed to be hard. When I started, it was funny, I sang really loud to forget the "pain", I talked to myself to distract from it.

Since I had nothing to lose (the energy bill had decreased dramatically and my mood was getting increasingly better each day), I pushed on, and I tried and I tried... Some days I would cheat and take a warm shower "as a reward"... silly me.

It was only when I accepted it, only when I synchronized my breathing and my mind that I was able to use my natural neuroplasticity to reprogram my brain to be more resilient. Today when I tell myself "I am going to take this shower, period" my body starts to heat up even before I turn on the faucet. There is no need to be any drama attached to it, the fear is completely psychological.

But this is not a magical pill that you take and suddenly all your problems disappear, this is just a way to quickly boost your energy, self-esteem and practice your focus, discipline and determination. It is a jump start of good habits that attached to other good habits, professional habits and moral behaviour, will push your life forward and, instead of just propelling you outside of the hole, it will help you build a solid foundation from which you can build upon for the rest of your life.

If you feel interested in learning more about it, there are three ways I suggest you research:

  • The website:

  • Youtube:

  • Books:

This is one good habit I created that I just cannot stop anymore, it is a part of my everyday routine, it's part of who I am. There were many other things that helped me overcome that bad phase I was going through; I made new friends, I went back to being more religious, but most importantly I learned to love myself more. But the WHM definitely helped me create a momentum.

I hope that some of what I wrote today helps you at any level, for whatever reason. This is one of the reasons I'm here (at POB) for. To exchange experiences, to help each other. Please leave an upvote to help me keep writing and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Oh, and one more thing, don't forget...

PORTUGUESE VERSION

A Chama Interior

A Provação Fatídica

Permita-me compartilhar minha experiência com esses sentimentos

A Beleza De Chegar Ao Fundo Do Poço || Por Que Começar Do Ponto Mais Baixo Pode Trazer A Maior Mudança
— por @surfermarly

12 Razões Porquê Chegar Ao Fundo Do Poço É A Melhor Coisa Que Pode Acontecer Na Sua Vida

🙌🏼 Hahaha

Obrigado pelo comentário @hranhuk!!

I was able to use my natural neuroplasticity to reprogram my brain to be more resilient.

I read about neuroplasticity several years ago and it was key in making a lot of major changes in my life. It does take effort, patience and time like you said, but you can rewire your thinking. I look at the world a lot differently than I used to. :)

Great read and thanks for sharing!

Exactly, it takes time and effort but when you finally realize you're winning, you are overloaded with a sense of empowerment, like you can control and shape your body and mind any way you want it to, which is true.

Thanks for the input @oldmans!!
