Toothed Squirrels (World Squirrel Day) (ENG/SPA)

When I was a child I loved when they took me to the Bolivar Square in Caracas, because I could see the squirrels down and up the trees with their surprising and characteristic speed, plus I also loved to see the famous Disney Chip and Dale squirrels in action, the truth believed that some of the things that illustrated them in cartoons were exaggerated until I detail them a little more in the wild, now these unique animals have a world date and is celebrated on January 21.

Welcome to my blog.png

That's right, since 2001 this particular date is celebrated, thanks to the naturalist Christy Hargrove, who considered that the creation of this celebration would be an excellent reason to feed these mammals and learn about the species.

Maybe for you or for me there are one or two species of these fast little animals, but it turns out that there are between 200 and 300 species, it is not easy to determine the number, since the information varies, but assuming that there are about 200 is enough to study these sociable beings that as I pointed out we usually feed in squares and parks.

Among the characteristics that highlight these rodents that seem to us so tender we have that they have an excellent sight and reflexes and although we see them as precious and huggable we must be careful with their sharp teeth, which do not stop growing, all these characteristics are those needed for their work as thieves since four (25%) of their breath is stolen, to other squirrels, birds or other animals, this food is stored to be consumed during the winter or the times of excuses and these beings know how to track and find their warehouses.

On the other hand, we believe that they are all small, but there is a large squirrel that measures one meter, the Indian squirrel and the smallest is the African pygmy squirrel that measures 13 centimeters, on the other hand as I mentioned at the beginning of the publication I thought that some of the things they showed about the squirrels in the cartoons were pure exaggerations such as them being so quarrelsome and jealous with their food or being attacked and chased and it turned out to be true and not because I saw it in a documentary I witnessed it one morning when my cat Catire chased a squirrel that lived for a while in the Urbanization and this suddenly turned and began to make sounds, my cat stayed in the place and I did the same, it was something very funny and something simply unforgettable.

On the other hand, it is important to point out that squirrels play an important role in nature since they contribute to the growth of new trees, as they are used to transport and collect seeds, which are usually used as food and when these, for some reason are not consumed, they germinate giving birth to future trees, on the other hand, these rodents help to control some pests. Here are some curious facts about these little animals:

  • Squirrels have great vision. But you will be surprised to know that, at the moment of birth, they are totally blind, so they need the protection of their mother until this sense develops normally.
  • There is a type of squirrel that, after mating, has the habit of masturbating. These males have large limbs, which reach a size of approximately 40% of their body length.
  • Although they seem to be harmless and cute looking animals, for some humans they can become a real pest, since, being rodents, they tend to bite everything they get in their path.
  • In the past, squirrels were used as pets among the wealthiest and most aristocratic families of that time.
  • Many things have been said and written about this cute and original animal. In children's stories, the most famous character is represented by Squirrel Nutkin or the also controversial Morwenna, the diabolical squirrel of the writer Beatriz Potter.

Bienvenidos a mi blog.png

A very cute post! We have tons of squirrels and chipmunks here where I live. Yes, they're cute and funny, but they are also a pain in the backside. They try to get into my house in the fall to enjoy a warm winter at my expense.

Since I have installed a new roof and siding on my home, they can no longer get inside. We are now much more friendly with each other, as a result. lol

Thank you for sharing this adorable post with us.

Cheers!

hahaha I pictured the whole squirrel show in my mind, you made me laugh a lot, in researching I read that, such as signs they can be a pain in the ass for various reasons, thank God they don't come in anymore, but I picture them getting cold and it makes me sore, can't you build them a shelter outside?
