Who is the real you?

Hello misunderstood friends, as a faithful follower of entertainment I seek to escape from my reality entering a fictional reality and I have found refuge totally in streaming platforms, I have always believed that looking for something to do while you are sad, thoughtful or with a lot of stress is super important for mental health and to be able to manage feelings in a more efficient way, do any of you do not watch a series but the truth is that you are thinking about things, planning something or just with a guayabo.

Guayabo: Colloquial form characteristic of Venezuela, it wants to expose the fact of being sad, melancholic, missing someone, etc.
Example: "I have a guayabo because I was fired from my job"( hahaha Facts).

Moreover, studies have been done on this and it has been shown that watching or listening to series, movies, podcasts or just listening to music helps your life and your health in the following ways:

  1. It releases dopamine.
  2. A good way to socialize.
  3. Connects with emotions.
  4. Helps to deal better with problems.
  5. Reduces the depressive state.

Changing the subject, but not leaving aside what I just indicated in the paragraphs above, in this post I also come to talk about SEVERANCE a series produced by APPLETV and that in my opinion breaks the stereotype of a psychological drama series, It is directed by actor Ben Stiller that maybe you can remember him in movies like: "A Night at the Museum", "My Girlfriend Polly", etc.

I must admit that I was surprised that this actor was directing this movie and I had the misfortune to judge that it would be a bad comedy drama series, but PeakD friends, this series is not bad and it is definitely not comedy.

Let's stop beating around the bush and start with this review of this great series that definitely left me speechless.

PRIMICIA

The series introduces us to Mark a widowed man who doesn't know how to deal with what he feels or worse what his family and colleagues want him to feel or externalize, he works in a company called "LUMON", it turns out that in this particular company they subject you to an "irreversible" surgical process they call it: "Separation" which separates your thoughts and memories in two, on one side is your "Intus" which is your work person who only lives inside LUMON, he doesn't know if he has children, family, what he ate the night before or if he is happy, and on the other side is your "Exus" which is your experiential person who doesn't know what he works in, who he works for or simply if he is happy with his colleagues and what he does but he is fine with it because that way he can forget for 8 hours about his deceased wife and also to deal with that.

The series shows us the day to day life of these two "I's" of Mark which at first seems great and each "I" of Mark does what he has to do and the exus goes about his daily business, comes to work, talks to his exus friends from his work department, but it gets interesting because we are shown from the beginning that this Mark's perspective is sad, even though he doesn't see it that way, why do I say this? Notice; he walks into a building and after 8 hours he gets on an elevator and deactivates and takes his place the intus who is the Mark with personal memories going home and with money earned from his job which is super cool.

STORY

Severance 3.jpg

fuente

The story begins when Petey director of the department where Mark works and in turn best friend of the labor Mark is fired and they give the position of director to Mark thing that falls like a bucket of cold water since he is not used to deal with that environment so bureaucratic that is to be head of a company like LUMON, I find it excellent as they play with the feelings since the same workers who are in charge of Mark and not even Mark himself know what they do, they only do it because they have to do it because it is their job and that is what they are hired for.

Another event that Mark has to live at work is that Helly, a new worker that they have to train, enters, but she is reluctant to work in a place that she does not know why she does it (since let's remember that the "Intus" work do not have personal memories) and logically she does not want to have only a working life, she wants to be free and happy.

Already with this the series caught me 100% because only 20 minutes of chapter made me ask myself several questions that are also asked to Mark in the chapter itself; Why did you decide to practice this surgical procedure, How do you know that what you do at work is morally and ethically correct, Is your "Intus" work is happy, Who is the real you, etc.. Already only with this that is presented to us ONLY in the first chapter gives as for a hundred episodes without leaving the plot.

Who is the real you?

Severance 4.jpg

People have memories and those memories help create ourselves and be who we are, who works for this company if they have no memories and don't know who they are, who is the real "I" ?", etc. I have always thought that we have personalities for every type of place we find ourselves, whether it is work, home, a party, etc.
I have realized that repressing what we think and feel is very wrong and hurts us, we feel sad, confused, anxious, desperate and even humiliated and the worst thing is that the only ones who can decide to express something are us so we are hurting ourselves... we are betraying ourselves.

This series showed me that changing ourselves by being with someone or being somewhere makes us not know ourselves and forget who the real you can be, always express what you feel and always state your position on the things you think.

I want to make it clear that I am not an expert in expressing my feelings in the best way and many times I keep quiet to avoid a problem since it is a sad reality that "it is not what you say, but how you say it" and also that people sometimes feel that you are attacking them and as a reflex they defend themselves and a discussion can be generated that was not desired.

Mark's two "I's" deal with this as they both repress what they think or what you want to do out of fear, disinterest or because they think they are the problem, the series works this in a very punctual, raw way and gives an exceptional development where you yourself will be able to identify them.
Here are some tips that I am trying to follow that I could identify in the series to be able to do it in the best way:

  1. Don't make it personal.
  2. Avoid belittling the other person's ideas and beliefs.
  3. Use first person (I) statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need.
  4. Listen to the other person's point of view.
  5. Stay calm.

It is not easy but not impossible.

I hope you liked this post where I hope you can feel identified and supported, and that you have also been curious and run to see the series that I promise you will love, we are reading my misunderstood friends of the world.
