Synopsis

The Batman is basically an investigation noir movie starring Batman. A killer is on the loose and leaves behind clues and Batman tries to find him as he goes into the social and political structure of Gotham that made the city the mess it is during the movie.

What I Liked About The Movie

Well, Robert Patterson as Batman is good. He brings a more gritty version to Bruce Wayne which I liked. Not surprising as he is a great actor whose acting reputation was harmed by his Twilight role.

Colin Farrell as the Penguin was also pretty good. The makeup, along with his transformation and mannerism made for a joyful experience that I didn't even know was Colin Farrell before I googled the name to give the actor props.

Matt Reeves did a great job with the cinematography and tone of the movie. The main theme and Nirvana's Something In The Way were a great addition to the soundtrack. It created beautifully shot moments and background music.

I really love what they have done regarding the tone. It is different than most if not everything we have seen before in the superhero movie. The noir aspect created a great purpose for Batman's association with the darkness that I would go as far as say it outdone Nolan's version.

What I Didn't Like About The Movie

Starting off, the time. The movie is a few minutes shy of being three hours and it has no right to be remotely so. The reason I am saying that is because the length of the movie actually ruined some of the stuff I liked about the movie.

Batman/Bruce Wayne started enough to crack riddles. But as the movie went on they needed different things which made him gradually dumber. It also made the revelations anti-climatic opposed to the amount of time spent chasing the riddle. It also ruined the two soundtracks I mentioned as it kept playing them which I didn't mind for the first hour and a half really, which proves why the movie should have been shorter.

It also seems like Matt Reeves didn't know when to end his movie during the last hour. Many shots seemed like they should have been the ending but it kept going from one to another I felt he was supposed to choose one but ended up going with all of them.

The main antagonist and Alfred didn't do much for me. The antagonist was fine until the person was revealed and after that I couldn't help but laugh at him, to be honest.

It also seemed like the movie over-embraced the eventual comparison to Nolan's Batman and had many similar concepts. The fighting scenes weren't good overall. Finally

It Doesn't Feel Like We Really Needed Batman For This Story

This is similar to my problem with the Watchmen series. The story is still good, but I don't see why we needed superheroes for it. I didn't see anything that warranted Batman rather than anyone else.

Also, Batman really seemed stupid at times and just got lucky by having people around him monologuing facts for him.

My rating: 7/10

I give the movie props for trying something completely new. But the movie really gets tiresome that my friend who went with me to the movie because she was looking forward to it fell asleep.

The movie really shines at stating how brutal Gotham's reality is in a way that I haven't seen before even in Nolan's trilogy. It really drove the point home with how bad the city is which is amazing.

The End

That's my review of The Batman. What did you think of it?

Thank you for your review. I'm not sure I could sit through another Batman movie, especially 3 hours! I feel like the Batman story has been told to death and there shouldn't be another rehashing of the story. I'm sure as a comic fan I will give it a watch someday but not anytime soon. Thanks again!

The good thing is that the moviemakers are aware of that, so they didn't start from the origin. But overall, I really thing Superhero movies have become a clutch at this point.

I haven't seen it but I wonder if my boyfriend was watching it recently and turned it off. Need to ask though. 3 hours seems like a longggg sit for something that's not worth it. I haven't seen it myself but reading this, I probably won't either, that's too long for me if I don't absolutely love something :)

PS I was going to give you a 1UP vote, but I see you have accidentally added the CTP tag, so I can't give you one. Please make sure next time you only add the relevant tags and I will be back for some extra curation love :)

So, in other words, 1SufaceLevel!

3 hours is a long commitment. Especially with me in movies as I have a rather critical/expensive taste. I have watched over a thousand movies and TV shows, and I could say that I hate more than I like/love.

Thank you for the very good review, I myself watched the movie recently and I must say I enjoyed it very much. It was a bit too long, but the detective theme that ran through the whole movie was interesting

It's not like I hated the movie. Found the tone refreshing. And I did enjoy it mostly, it's just when I review, I have to look at it from a critic's perspective.

Thank you for the review. I am a Marvel character fan but I think Batman has been over done. I'll watch this when it is on cable not at the movies.

I mean, we haven't seen him as much as half we have Marvel's main superheroes. But, I see your point. DC have been a mess.

I have not seen it yet so thanks for the review. I have heard mixed reviews from people I have talked to that have seen it. It is always good to get a review from a professional writer.

Much appreciated review of the newest Batman movie. Three hours is quite the time commitment but I have watched other movies that are about the same length. Namely Goodfellas and Casino just as examples. I really liked the Christopher Nolan Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale so I am curious if this will be as good.

I still rate what they did highly, hence the rating. But, the movie drags on. I don't you're going to hate the movie no matter what if I am honest.

You will actually see some elements that are reminiscent of the Dark Knight.

One of the things I love about having our own home theater is waiting for the movies to come out on streaming or on disc. When they are longer movies and we can pause them and watch at our leisure it is more enjoyable. I would rather sit on my couch and watch a longer movie than in a seat at the theater. Looking forward to seeing. I am curious now!

I can totally relate with your review, I felt like if in this movie the main character was a random detective instead of Batman, nothing would have changed... overall a good movie, but Batman should be the protagonist, not an appearance for christ's sake

Batman is usually very good if you can stay up through the entire movie. I think they all get boring at some point.

In my opinion, the only reason they keep re-making the story is money. The story always changes a little, I guess from another view point. To show different things that's going on in the city, but it does get old and we keep watching & watching.

I won't spend money to go to the movies though, I'll just wait for it to come to me. (On TV).
