Why Is This the Right Time to Start Playing Splinterlands

Over the past year or so, life for newcomers has been tough on Splinterlands: between hordes of greedy bots, low rewards, and the need to buy/rent a good number of cards in order to have at least some hope of getting some rewards, continuing to play has not been easy.

I say this firsthand, as I myself began my adventure at the end of August 2021, just a few months before so many things began to change: the game at the time was too generous and, for that reason, unsustainable; the developers understood that it was necessary to create a link between the possibility of earning and the resources owned by each player within the game, rewarding as much as possible those who invested their own money and have rich and valuable collections.

The downside was that many, many newcomer players found themselves unable to obtain any rewards at all, except by investing heavily in the game itself, buying or renting cards... but even then the gains were not easy, due to the prices of cards being incredibly high and the number of bots whopping.

Lately, however, things seem to be taking a completely different turn, and after what seemed like a very long time, I get the impression that Splinterlands is becoming a much more accessible game again, allowing even newcomers to get acceptable gains and start building their collection, with the goal of accessing higher Leagues.

This shift, in my opinion, is mainly due to four reasons.

Card Prices

Whereas a year and a few months ago legendaries from the newest Reward set were selling for prices between $20 and $50, today those same cards can be bought for a few dollars; epics, commons, and rares cost a only some cents.

Chaos Legion cards range in price from a few cents to a few dollars, with many legendaries selling on average for 5 bucks.

Chaos Legion Summoners, if you exclude the legendary ones, can be bought for a few dollars and are all (except for the poor General Sloan...) very versatile and strong.

In short, right now buying a good number of cards is incredibly inexpensive and building a deck capable of climbing the ranks of the Bronze League and entering the Silver League, where the rewards tend to improve significantly, requires a very low investment, especially compared to what it would have taken a year ago.

Bots

The recent introduction of the Soulbound cards seems, at least for the time being, to have greatly reduced the presence of bots in matchmaking: this could be due to the need of the respective developers to update them so that they are able to use the new cards and adapt to the different rulesets that have been introduced, but it could also be due to the Soulbound cards themself, which, not being currently transferable, make the risk of investing in a bot much greater, since it will take much longer before being able to get back the initial investment.

All of this is also reflected in the rentals: since there is much less demand (as many bots used to work with rented cards) the prices are now very low and it only takes a really small amount of DEC to be able to rent cards suitable for playing even in Leagues above Bronze.

Soulbound Cards

Also, Soulbound cards can make life easier for new players: although in fact in the Bronze League things are the same as before, already from the Silver League one can find multiple copies of the same card inside a chest.

NewChestRewards.png

Of course, it is from the Gold League that the difference becomes more obvious, and for a newcomer it may initially seem an extremely distant goal to get that far: but the truth is that renting cards that even allow you to unlock Gold chests for the following season is very easy and inexpensive, especially thanks to the other two factors described just above (low card prices and reduced presence of bots).

A new player, at this time, can fairly easily start building his or her collection, gaining some good rewards every day and having fun playing Splinterlands... which is probably the most important thing, since it's a game!

NFTy Arcade

Finally, one must consider the recent development of new services that are aimed precisely at helping new players get started on Splinterlands without having to spend anything (with the exception of the Summoner's Spellbook).

In this regard I refer those interested in NFTy Arcade, a platform that I myself have been using for several months now with great pleasure, to an article I wrote some time ago:

And I also leave you with a link to a recent post from @splinterlands about the possibility of reserving a whopping 500,000 Chaos Legion packs for deck-building to be made available to players via NFTy Arcade: Splinterlands to utilize Chaos Legion packs for deck creation on the NFTy Arcade platform.

In short, in my opinion this is the best time - at least in the last year - to start playing Splinterlands...or to get back into it!

Great arguments why someone should start to play Splinterlands! I'm thinking the last weeks of restarting my splinterlands adventure, but first need to scrape some funds together 😅

Thanks! I saw you have a lot of assets on WOO, awesome! I'm also following that game, but I have a fraction of what you got :)

About Splinterlands, you can try NFTy Arcade, while gathering the resources needed to build your own collection! This way you can get a better idea on what you need to buy and how much you can expect to earn.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I went heay on WOO. It's a project which has a lot of elements that I want to see for a project:

  • a competent team
  • a link with 'real life': in this case helping out wrestlers
  • a game, I like to game :)
  • Having utility
  • An enthousiast community
  • ...

But yea, I don't have to convince you. It's by the way through WOO that I started to follow you ;)

I heard about NFTy arcade, should look into it. Although I'm always a bit suspicious about lending a lot of cards because of the fear of not regaining these costs. But, I'll definitely check it out!

Yup, I like it a lot too! Even if my investment is still small I plan to increase it steadely :) I won't reach as much as you (you are close to 1M WOO and have over 1,000 packs... wow! I guess you are even looking to buy sone land in the presale?), but I'd like to have enough assets before it goes mainstream :)

Although I'm always a bit suspicious about lending a lot of cards because of the fear of not regaining these costs. But, I'll definitely check it out!

Uhm, I used it only as a borrower, so I have no idea on how much lenders can get through it, though... but rentals are right now extremely cheap, so I guess NFTy is still a better option, if you can lend out a deck able to fight in the upper leagues (at least Gold, I would say).

I was able to buy 600 packs in the general sale, for a big part with the WOO I mined. Also was quite lucky that I received 17 Sonny Onoo's and the GB SO, which accelerated my WOO earnings even more. Let's say it has really been a snowball so far for me.

I'm going to buy some land aswell, although it won't be that much compared to the assets I already hold. Like you said, I don't want to miss out on the early advantage.

Oh, you really built up your account, just by renting cards on SPL? Than I definitely have to check it out.

Just checked your spl collection, is it really for the biggest part cause of rented cards? It seems crazy to me :o

I wish you to achieve even greater result! And in some years I will remember this day as the day in which I talked to a WOO-Whale :) Hopefully I will also be a dolphin or something similar ahahah

Nope, only in the last two months: previously I was playing with my own cards and buying some with what I was getting from posts.

Then, in December I started using NFTy as
a borrower and this allowed me to step upmy earnings, as I'm also able to rent my full collection (because I don't need my cards to play).
