Lata po "Lśnieniu" King postanowił sprawdzić, co słychać u chłopca, który ocalał z pożaru Hotelu - Danny'ego. I tak powstała kontynuacja - "Doktor Sen".
Okazuje się, że Danny ma niezwykłe umiejętności, ale niestety powiela błędy swojego ojca.
Do tego stopnia, że dosięgnął bruku - i zrobił straszną rzecz, która rzutować będzie na losach maleńkiego chłopca. Ta rzecz będzie go prześladować do końca jego dni, ale pośrednio pozwoli mu na powrót do trzeźwości.
I tutaj muszę przyznać, że kiedyś ciężko było mi znosić dzieła, w których krzywda działa się zwierzętom. Teraz naprawdę przeżywam te sceny, w których krzywda dzieje się małym dzieciom (że o czytaniu wiadomości nie wspomnę). Tak było i tutaj, scena z chłopcem i jej skutki nieco mną wstrząsnęły.
Wracając jednak do fabuły, być może dzięki temu Danny odzyskał siebie, a jego umiejętności pozwolą mu na ocalenie niezwykłej dziewczynki, która posiada tajemnicze zdolności, jak on.
Mamy też czarne charaktery - Prawdziwi, czyli nie-ludzie, nie-wampiry, potwory o ludzkich ciałach, które żywią się Parą, zdobywaną wskutek torturowania i mordowania - a jakże! - dzieci. A przewodzi im zła i mroczna kobieta w kapeluszu.
Widziałam już parę lat temu film na podstawie tej powieści, nie wszystko pamiętałam, ale wraz z odkrywaniem kolejnych stron powieści przypominało mi się coraz więcej. Tak czy siak, udana lektura. Wciągająca, trzymająca w napięciu. Wstrząsająca w tych brutalnych momentach. Wzbudzająca sympatię do postaci, z których chyba żadna nie jest krystalicznie dobra.
