Don't be afraid to try new things.

This post is, in part, inspired by some of the people I see here that step out of their comfort zones. It's not easy and can be rather nerve wracking. There have been many times I was paralyzed with fear.
Many years ago, I tried my hand at selling health insurance. I had no idea what I was doing. I was handed a binder and list of potential clients. It was so bad, I would drive to their place and sit in my car. I could not overcome the fear. Needless to say, I wasn't very successful.

Now, some 20+ years later, I have gotten better. Although, there are times, fear has raised it's ugly head and stopped me dead in my tracks.
This is my rambling way to get to the point of this post. Thank you for your patience.
Today, I made Salsa Verde. Until a little while ago I'd never even heard of a tomatillo, let alone ever made food with one. They look like this --->

Very much like a normal green tomato to me. They are sour though, almost like a green apple.
This is after roasting for about 20 minutes in a 500 degree oven

Once everything was roasted and nicely charred, all the ingredients went into my super-duper power whirrer.

Here it becomes a matter of preference. You can pulse lightly for chunky salsa or blitz a bit longer for a smoother outcome. If you like it hot, add in another pepper. I didn't have the exact ingredients on hand. That seems to be the case, more often than not. It's also my main stumbling block to new culinary adventures. I don't keep a lot of different produce on hand. It's just not practical and usually winds up with a lot of waste.
I went with very smooth this time.

It needs to sit in the fridge for a few hours to meld together.
This is the recipe I used, well based mine off of. Easy to follow and make.

super-duper power whirrer.

I am so calling blenders that now. 😄

Good for you for trying new foods! I was raised on a very bland, very limited diet and only really got adventurous (for me; not adventurous to other people's standards) in adulthood. I worked in a health food store for a time and that's where I learned a lot of veggies that my parents just never ate (and different ways to cook them). One time I had to ask a customer what the collard greens were as they didn't have a tag so I could look it up at the register. She gave me a look like she was shocked and asked me where I was from. I said, "New Jersey," and she laughed and said, "THAT explains it!" 😂

Jersey here too. My mom was never super daring in the kitchen. Normal stuff steak, boring veggies etc. I never had a taco until after I had left home. I discovered butternut squash recently, another food I was afraid to try.
Thank you for the support and encouragement.

Hah love the name of your blender!

I think trying new things is a key to a more productive, interesting and rewarding life! Good on you. Sometimes you gotta do the little things before the big things. I know what anxiety is all about, that's for sure. It can be paralysing.

I love tomatillo - i tried to grow them this year but it didn't work. Ottolenghi really believes that by chargrilling you totally bring out the flavour - I reckon he's right. I'm tempted to chargrill some jalapeno and onions and garlic to add to this one! Yum.

Tomatillos are magic, and salsa verde is good stuff. Roasting things before using in almost any recipe always makes them better. Thanks for sharing it with us.
