Support System

Going home from work, two men were having a conversation on the bus and I couldn’t help but take note of one word that kept coming “support system”. To be sincere I didn’t quite know the meaning, but to understand what they were talking about, I had search for it and got to understand what it’s all about, so I will try to explain it as I understood it and give some information about it for those also interested.

What is a social support system?

A support system is said to be a network or group of people that can provide either emotional support or practical support to your well-being. These supports help us in our day-to-day life or activities, to make things easy as possible. In simple terms, they are our caregivers, organizations, or agencies that contribute to helping us balance our well-being.

Social support systems can be in any form, and some of them are; information sharing support system, physical support system, emotion assistance support system, positive outlook support system.

Information sharing support systems are the system that 5shares information based on your community or its resources. Also advice from close friends and family and information about what we need to know.

A physical support system can come in different forms it can be aiding someone in doing something, an example of physical support is helping with basic chores, giving someone a lift, or providing assistance when needed.

The emotional support system has to do with supports from friends and family, which provide listening ears to us in hard times and help us through it. They provide love, care, and trust.

A positive outlook support system involves trying to pass information to someone to make them cheerful or see things clearly to enable them not to lose themselves.

Some people who help us in our social system in the different categories are;

Caregivers: Parents, children, spouse, friends, relatives, and other caregivers like nannies, doctors, and nurses, etc.

Organizations: Support groups, churches, clubs, schools, etc.

Agencies: Social services, public health, Activity programs, etc.

The benefit of a support system involves a network or group of people that can keep you company and support you when times are hard or when you feeling down or overwhelmed emotionally. They can also help you get back on your feet when they are setbacks.

What makes up a support system?

They are people or things we encounter in our daily life and they provide different types of support. They are;

• Husband or partners
• Parents
• Siblings
• In-laws
• Neighbors
• Drivers
• Nanny
• cook
• Domestic staffs
• Understanding boss
• Customers
• Office assistant etc.

And to sustain the support system relationship you have to keep in touch by keeping the line of communication open, you have to respect and know limits, be ready to accept help and be available when needed, and above all show appreciation.
