Begginer First Season ROI on card Rentals

I started on Splinterlands recently, and after the end of my second season, I'll share my experience and results, analyzing the return over investment on renting cards.

First, I need to emphasize that my initial investment in the game was minimal. I bought only the Summoner's Spellbook and a pack with 10 Quest Potions (before DEC was the only way to buy them). I got lucky! In the first days, I got a chest with 2k DEC. That opened a window of opportunity to rent cards and climb up the ladder until the end of the season.

I was still on my first battles in the game, so I researched good decks for beginners and found a promising one on Earth Splinter. A simple strategy based on Thorns ability from Mylor Crowling summoner.

Mylor.png

With the strategy chosen, it's time to rent cards! First, I rented only the cards for battles without thinking about the power requirements to climb in the next league. So, the majority of rented cards were from Earth Splinters and worked well with Mylor.

The Thorn ability is very effective! Level up to Bronze II was easy and fast, but I didn't have sufficient deck power to battle in that league. I got to the market, one more time, to rent power to compete on Bronze II.

That was my approach until the end of the season. When my level was enough to battle in the next league, I rented only the power needed for that. But I was picking cards only for power and their rent price, without planning on using them in my strategy. In the end, I used only a few of the rented cards.

The table below shows cards rented, duration, and total DEC spent.

CardRental DaysTotal (DEC)

Ant Miners1028,79
Onyx Sentinel10403,75

Tower Griffin15,7
Furious Chicken10168,5
Creeping Ooze109,3

In Bronze Leagues, you'll find few opponents that will check what you used in the last battles and try to counter it, but that changes on Silver. Mylor and Thorns is a popular strategy in low-level leagues and not too difficult to counter, so my win rate dropped when I got to Silver III. With that, I realized Silver III where the limit for my deck and actual knowledge of the game.

Without doing the math at the time, my feeling was that I already spent more than what I expect to gain. I finished the season in Silver III.

The table below shows my Season End rewards.

I used market value for Charlok Minotaur, instead of the burning DEC value.

In the season end, my net result was a loss of 470 DEC.

It was clear that rent cards only for power requirements, without plans to use them in battles, was not a good investment unless you can pay a really low cost for the rentals. In the meantime, I'm not so sure if it's possible to climb beyond bronze leagues without renting only for power.

Another important point was the rental duration. I have a day job, so I have little time to play, less them a couple hours every day. So more them five days for a rental period seems too much to me.

I need to highlight the fact that I used the value of the reward I got on the chests and not the theoretical value. I also didn't use the DEC gained on battles on calculations since they can oscillate a lot between seasons.

For my second season, I decided to change de approach with the card rentals. The idea is to shorten the rental time and try to rent cards that I can use in battles. In my next post, I'll show the results of that new approach.

Please, feel free to point my errors and discuss this in the comments.

Dentre as várias estratégias analisadas, uma do Earth Splinter me pareceu a mais promissora. Estratégia simples, baseada na habilidade Thorns do summoner Mylor Crowling.

Mylor.png
