A New PeakD feature

PeakD has a NEW Feature!

I noticed this new feature while reading posts yesterday. At least, this was when I first saw it.

I may have been there longer, and this post may be old news to you, but here goes...

PeakD now has a text-to-speech engine.

It is only in PeakD from what I have seen, or rather NOT seen on other frontends.

This is a post by @gadrian that I listened to this morning.

It is a nice new feature, but it does have a few issues that may take getting used to.

It is a rather flat monotone voice, but nonetheless, it does translate the text rather well.

It is strange to listen to posts by people you have heard speak, and you know the sound of their voices.

An example would be @jongolson, who I have listened to and talked with for over a decade, as well as @taskmaster4450, who has a number of video post as well as a co-host on the Cryptomaniacs podcast.

So, why does this matter to me?

The first and most obvious reason is that listening is much easier than reading text.

I believe that this is a positive step forward for Hive in general.

Amazon makes a lot of money selling audiobooks. Most people, in general, would prefer to listen rather than read text.

But, I only read posts from XYZ frontend. How can I benefit from this.?

I am glad you asked that.

Any post written on any frontend, can be viewed in PeakD.

If you are not aware of how this is done, I have made a little graphic to help you see how it is done.

Now, I know this is going to bug a few die hard readers, but overall I feel it is a step forward for Hive.

It is a rather flat monotone voice

That means a lot of nuance and tone in good writing is missed.

Reading, more than listening, hones language skills. Listening (to a human voice), and reading is even better. You might find this an interesting read.

This - the loss or poor development of reading, comprehension and understanding skills is why there is a return to an emphasis on handwriting and note taking. As opposed to typing.

You are absolutely correct, @fionasfavourites.

It does not reflect emotion or inflection as the written word can.
I think there are times when narration is helpful, but it depends on the topic being written.

I saw it a while back and it was definitely a surprise. I listed to one of my posts and that flat monotone voice tripped me out lol. It's definitely a cool feature that I'm sure will come in handy at some point.

I haven't put to work the new feature yet, John, although I know about it since its launch. But I need to start taking advantage of it. This feature reminds me of something similar that existed on the old chain. There was a sort of service that added comments to many popular bloggers with links to their "mp3" version of the post if I remember correctly. Also, an automated voice with strange inflections, but intelligible. I listened to such a file once.

Yeah, I saw that! This is nice. It's a win for all of us I think. It's gonna make it a lot easier for people new to hive to interact with our content. Although the voice is monotone, I feel like listening to long-form content is the way that content will probably start being consumed here.

If only we could speed his voice us a bit...

I found that too and wondered where it came from. I listened to one post like that. And it is strange when you know what the person who wrote the post really sounds like. Thanks for the info about how to view a post in PeakD from another front end. I like that because I don't want to have a bunch of tabs open if possible.

Hi,
thanks for reporting the very useful function.
It’s very comfortable and I’ll use it because it makes my life easier.
In fact, I have in combination the extension of google translator and u"speakit" that reads me the wonderful contents present on the blockchain of Hive while I do something else in the room!
Now I just click on that button and everything will be easier!
