Stealing ad copy

Stealing Ads

As I was going through my incoming ListNerds mail this morning I came across something that I did not expect to see in our community.

A blatant stealing of ad copy.

Now, don’t get me wrong. It is fine to be promoting the same programs as others do but you need to at least make your own ad copy.

You can even use email swipes from the program you are promoting, that is okay, but it would still be better to modify them to add your own personality.

These mails were just copied and pasted into the new mail. This is not only a violation of copyright but a violation of ethics in advertising.

I am not sure if the mails were intended to deceive you into thinking that they were from the original author thus prompting upvotes or if the writer of the emails (or should I say copier) was simply too lazy to bother writing their own copy.

If they are not sure how to write good copy, they could at least change the original a bit to make it their own.

I understand that this is not a major crime and that there are far greater concerns in our world right now, but when I read these ads this morning it just ruffled my feathers, so I decided to rant a little.

Thanks for the indulgence.

By the way, if you are having trouble writing ad copy I recommend that you check out my friend, Kimberly Schimmel

I thought the same thing honestly and even started writing a draft about it. I just had too many other things to do so that post hasn't made it online yet. But yeah I'm hoping that this won't turn into common behavior. I don't like it. And I surely don't hope this person gets the rewards from the pool.

I have noticed some stuff earlier as well that I started writing about but then you know, other things come up, or real life etc.. This one is probably going to be one that I will finish though, as I'd like to let people know what my opinion is about this. From me, these people can expect a downvote, that's for sure. Even the formatting is the same, come on.

Thanks for bringing it up here!

blatant stealing of ad copy.

That's no good, not a good practice. I bet i'll get downvoted a lot.

I bet so too, but yet I still saw two of these exact copies land in my mailbox once again. It's not just one email, there are more.

Thank you for the mention! I am honored. I am also sad that you are seeing plagiarism. I have noticed it on the rise over the years as I teach high schoolers, too. It is just too easy to cut and paste--and not even take a moment to give credit to the writer. Of course the tool students use to cheat are also the tools I use to catch them. It makes me sad, but they need to learn that stealing words or graphics is just like stealing money or merchandise. !BBH !BEER

Thanks for the input, Kimberly. I felt I had to offer an option other than copying others' ads.

I have seen a few like that and I just click the link then leave. It makes you wonder what is really the line between what is a copy and not. After all, we see a lot of people just take good ideas and add a little bit of spin on them. I see it all the time when they try to sell an item on ebay or wish where it's obviously just a knockoff.

Was it on Listnerds or on Hive? Because on Hive plagiarism is not taken lightly and if it happens repeatedly and caught, the author will suffer some bad consequences (like being blacklisted and downvoted by projects which protect Hive against these practices).

So many people want to take the easy way out when it's so simple to change the wording a little and make it your own instead of out right copying someone elses work.

Interesting. Is it really stealing or copyright infringement if the person took it from email swipes? Also, what about the ad copy on replicated pages and banners?

Perhaps, this person is fairly new to affiliate marketing. Ad copy is often one of the most challenging aspects of marketing and it takes time to find footing to write original copy.

Hi @cryptocanny, this was an EXACT copy of a mail that was originally mailed by another member. This was not from an email swipe list. I understand the person may be new to affiliate marketing which is why I did not reveal the person or the ad. I am just hoping to stop the practice before it gets out of hand.

I think I know the one you're talking about. I do use email swipes when I join a program because it is easier but I get your point. I am also willing to pay someone to write ad copy for me. I have done that as well. But to just plain steal ad copy... nope! Nice promotion of Kimberly too!

I totally agree this is not acceptable. I don't upvote anything I think is a copy. The problem is I usually see the copy first and then penalize the originator. I also don't reward the second email with the same thing. Thanks for the post.
