Should we upvote ourself?

avatar

This is a question occupied in a lot of hiver's mind. This is difficult to answer. Some like to upvote themself but some do not like to upvote themself.

People think upvoting ourself is selfish but can you tell me the name of a man without ego. It will be ok if you do not upvote yourself too much. 10% selfvote should be allowed.

But I want to make a boundary on this topic. I heard a sentence from someone that we should not upvote ourself because we already get 50% curation reward from upvoting other people's post. I did not know we can get more than 50% by upvoting our post.. I will check this out. If someone comment on my post I will upvote his comment and my replies so I may get the answer I need.

But there are two conditions to decide this matter.

  1. If your HP is too low you should not upvote yourself.
  2. If your HP is decent you can upvote yourself.

If your HP is too low you can not get much money from your upvote. If you upvote other's people post you may have a chance to get a vote back. This is good for you if your partner's vote has value higher than you.

But if your upvote worth a lot you can upvote yourself. Because by upvoting your self you can convert HP to HBD. If you upvote on other people's post you will only get HP. If you upvote yourself you will also get some HBD. This is nice if you want to get some quick buck.

This is what I think. I will be glad if you write you thought on my post.

Interesting idea on the upvoting yourself to get HBD. I never thought of that.

This is because currently HBD is printing out instead of Hive.

I like your posts with the seemingly controversial topics. For me I see self votes as reward farming. If all the whales are self voting themselves then there'll be no need to curate others. Moreover if some people have a big vote then they'll no longer need to worry about the quality of their posts they can just write anything and vote it and end up in trending page.

Don´t agree, even in contrary. The more HP I have accumulated the more I try to produce quality content. And I can upvote all my posts and there is still enough voting power left to upvote many other posts.

You are an example of someone who self votes responsibly. Sadly, not everyone will self vote responsibly

Am with you on that, rather upvote others than myself that way we spread the wealth amongst ourselves, I like you whales example.

Different people have different thoughts. Some may want to stick with 100% selflessness and some may not. There are many arguments in this matter.

Hive is the combination of investment and social media. Even a social media allow self vote. No need to say the investor part.

If you do not like your creation then who will like your creation.

But Hive walks a different way and frown upon self vote.

I am not upvoting myself but ......

Self voting is tell how good is yourself to others. We should not do this but sometimes it needed because people do not notice how good we are.

That is the reason why candidate are making speech in front of people.

What they did in the past and what will they do in the future.

Self upvote is OK, because if you are not convinced that your own posts deserve an upvote, who else should be then? Also I invested several ten thousand dollars in this platform, so I take the freedom to try to get back as much of my investment as possible. If you want to forbid self upvotes, this is not in light with the freedom of the blockchain, and it would be an investment killer. But we need more people investing in Hive!

Thanks for your comment. I got your point. If you invest ten thousand dollar and get nothing but only HP. In final day you will have to power down your HP and sell them. I think this is worser than self voting.

The idea is to use your vote on others and help them grow whilst you grow from curation on that vote. In the past we had many users upvoting themselves as it was a time based vote gaming the system. This actually harmed curation as those that voted for themselves lost plenty of support. If everyone started self voting it would do more harm than good and is that simple. Curation is what keeps Hive going and you start to play with that and you will lose plenty of users. There are no short cuts to growing on Hive and you have only been here a short time and think this is alright. Just giving my point of view and the choice is yours.

I got your point. But 100% selflessness is hard to achieve. Sometimes you may need HBD or sometimes you may need attention for your post. Like 5% to 10% ego and 90 to 95% selflessness would be more flexible. If we can make 100% selflessness that would be better.

But a question is should we stick at 100% selflessness.

By the way I did not upvote myself since the time I can not remember.

I don't get the ego bit as this is a long journey and if you are concerned about not receiving rewards then all you do is work harder. This has been the biggest challenge I have ever undertaken and it takes years to get things moving as you need to build your followers and foundation first. When I first started out I voted on my own posts as I didn't understand the value of the vote and how to use it as a growth tool. By supporting others the rewards in return will be higher as you are being active within the community. Just keep growing and you will see things change.

When I joined SteemIt there were some strange things with the timing and order of votes. Several whales convinced me that I should upvote my posts.

I wish I didn't largely because my upvote was too low to matter.

Steemit.com did not show people the value of their upvote. Peakd.com shows the value of upvotes to three digits.

Here is a great clue for newbies. Go to the activities page on PeakD.com and look at your activities page. Click the box next to the words "curation rewards." It will show you your curation rewards.

The account vagabondspirit has about 90 HP. The account always upvotes at 100%. The page shows it usually gets 0.001 or 0.002 curation rewards. So, you need to have about 90 HP before you get curation rewards for your upvotes.

https://peakd.com/@vagabondspirit/activities

The Two Cent Cut Off

HIVE wipes away the curation rewards for posts that get under $0.02.

I decided that I wanted to have enough HP for my account to be over that amount. The upvote calculator shows the current value for a given HP vote value. NOTE: this cut off changes with the price of HIVE. Currently it is around 800 HP, which is about $440.00 USD.

With my upvote worth more than $0.02, I go through my comments and replies and upvote those with less than 0.02 in upvotes. This process is called sweeping dust.

My sweeping dust assures that people who upvote my posts get an award.

Ran Out of Things to Upvote.

I want my account to have 90% when I go to bed. Some times I find myself at two in the morning. I've read dozens of posts and haven't found anything that I want to upvote.

I think it is best just to upvote my own posts and getting some sleep, rather than speeding another hour reading posts trying to find decent material to upvote.

VerifyYourBrain Doesn't like Self-Voters

I've heard that VYB penalizes people who self-vote. I am not sure what their algorithm does.

Conclusion

New accounts shouldn't waste time upvoting. Redfish accounts should use their upvotes to sweep dust. Finally, IMHO, IF you can't find good content. You might as well self-vote.

Your vote should be used as a growth tool and self voting doesn't help you grow at all as you cannot grow without the support of others.

This is really fair comment. I like it. I also got another concept to sweep dust as a redfish. By the way I used dustsweeper to sweep my dust.

I've used both @dustsweeper and @dustbunny . They are a must for all redfish and plankton accounts.

But, I am trying to live a bot free life; so I sweep my own dust and I try to upvote at $0.03 so that the recipient receive their reward.

Thanks for your detailed response- it is very informative. I never knew about the 0.02 cut off or the HP. I do not upvote myself but my HP is not lofty enough to make a difference. I understand your viewpoint however.

You have 3700 HP and your 100% upvote is worth just under a dime.

It is always wise to keep the $0.02 in mind with upvoting comments. I like to keep comment upvotes in the $0.03 to $0.4 range to make sure that the recipient gets the reward.

LEO has the same problem as HIVE. The minimum LEO payout is 0.001 LEO. You need to have about 30 staked LEO before you start getting rewards.

I just looked at your Hive-Engine wallet. You might want to go into Hive-Engine.com and stake some of your alt-coins so that you increase your alt-coin rewards.

https://hive-engine.com/

As for the $0.02 Cut Off

I was looking back on my account. I only received rewards on about half of my first 200 posts. The $0.02 cut off had me extremely frustrated.

HIVE is a little better than SteemIt.

Wow Many thanks again for your detailed response. I will take your advise regarding coins on my Hive engine. You advise is very good - helps me to be wiser and maximize my benefits on this blockchain. Thanks again.

as regards this topic , one might want to argue that if you don’t see value in what you’re putting out why do you think others will value it ?
Be that as it may , as self upvotes might somewhat seem appealing I feel it will water down the structure of the ecosystem.

YES! I believe you should be able to upvote yourself however it should be limited to once MAYBE twice a day while the rest is used elsewhere. You invested time, money and resources and made the decision to power up your hive so you get to do with it what you want. Upvoting your own quality work is a great way to give it a little kick and get it noticed.

I also agree with you. You can upvote 10 times with 100% voting power. If I upvote one to myself and 9 to others would be ok I think.

Just reflecting based on real-world voting. Though the two spheres are different because one is political and the other is technological-monetary, one can argue that the analogy isn't applicable. However, when it comes to voting, the first thing that comes to my mind is politics. Are political candidates not allowed to vote for themselves?

It depends on specific tribes. If the tribes' rules don't allow such self-vote, then don't do it or don't tag that tribe if you are self-voting your posts. If I see token issuers voting on their posts, is it wrong then to follow them?

Well, I asked this question few months ago in our newbies initiative program and I was told that it is frowned upon in hive but someone with a low voting power might not be a big problem.
