The Dawn of Web 3.0

The Dawn of Web 3.0

While there's no set rules to what 3.0 is there's a general idea. I can look back at the dawn of the interest and see the steps to progression and how it's advanced and what to expect in the next era of the web.

Web 1.0 - 1989

Web 1.0 is considered the read only era. It was simply a bunch of pages interlinked with each other. These where static pages with no interaction on them instead the interaction took place off line. It was also an era of just information and running ads where actually banned lol

Web 2.0 - 1999 - Today

Web 2.0 started around 1999 with the introduction of blogging and the ability to interact with those blogs by leaving comments. From there it grew into Social networks from Myspace in 2003, Facebook in 2004, Youtube in 2005 and Twitter in 2006 and then started to rapidly advance into live streaming with platforms such as Twitch in 2011 and so forth.

However the huge draw back that started to develop over time and showed its ugly head just two years ago was how centralized the web became. Now primarily owned by just a few mega corps that once had good intentions now shadowbanning, restricting content, pushing hidden agendas and more. It's also opened up huge issues with identity theft, not protecting users data, manipulate users based on their tracked content consumption, exploit users data for more profits for the company and ultimate poses a huge threat to democracy itself and freedom of speech.

This put a HUGE call into action to start breaking these companies and move to decentralized platforms. It's an era of the internet we have only begun to tap into and one that will most likely be the future of the web which most call the web 3.0 era.

Web 3.0 - Today? - Future

The web 3.0 era to me and others is geared to putting the power back into the hands of people much in the way crypto is trying to put the money power back into the hands of many and break up governments and mega corps that we see today.

It's a way for content creators to start earning revenue on their produced content and build a true revenue streams for themselves instead of the backward system currently going on with traditional social networks.

Social networks today have limited reach, required payment of money to the company to reach those same people who are already following and worse of all track and sell your data to people advertising on their platform.

With web 3.0 much of this will change. Content creators will be rewarded for the content they put out most likely through crypto. This content won't be housed on a single server controlled by a company such as Amazon etc. Instead they will most likely adapt to be on decentralized clouds or such as Theta tv has been doing with decentralized rewards for those running nodes and simply watching streams and acting as a node for anyone near.

The other big advancement which most people think about when they hear web 3.0 is what is called the metaverse. In general it's a 3D world of virtual assets. Pretty much think of it as the matrix.

While we are not there yet for sure what's important to note is that these major shifts don't happen over night. Remember when Myspace came out even Facebook and how very basic they where. That's the point we are at now for the metaverse most likely still 5 years away from large adoption as I see it progressing faster than that of Social networks as much of the idea and basic infrastructure are already in place and the quick speed up of adoption with lockdowns from Covid.

I think the most important component of web 3.0 will be for users to have individual choice of choosing open sourced content discovery algorithms that work in their best interest.

Web2.0 is characterized by companies building algos that maximize user time-on-siste, exposure to ads, men and convertion to clicks and purchases. More often than not, this is not in the user's best interest.

Transparent, open and immutable blockchains can allow for anyone to build user-centred content discovery mechanisms and storting algorithms, that users can choose and community devs can verify works as promise and/or improve upon.

It certainly won't be dominated by the top down approach of stakeholders deciding what users should get to see (which is the case for web 2.0 and the current state of Hive),but rather bottom up from what users and communities find valuable.

Looking forward to the day when Twitter becomes nothing more than a front-end on the Hive network ;)
