Friday Finance 11/25/2022: Black Friday?

It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the Leo community.

Having worked in retail, I know all too well why they call the Friday after Thanksgiving "Black Friday". It likely means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I am sure none of us would be shocked if we suddenly found out the origin of the phrase was even more nefarious.

I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

While businesses ultimate goal is to be in the black, for me, the phrase leads to more depressed thinking. With the bear market still in full force, and crypto winter solidly established, it's easy to feel like these are dark times.

Despite all of that, Hive never sleeps. We have so much awesome stuff on chain and being built on chain, that taking a breather is not an option. Fortunes are built in the bear market and you have to show up to do that.

Splinterlands

I recently changed my strategy on Splinterlands. For quite some time now, I have been focusing on Gold Foil Brawl Fray's to help out my guild. I don't know about you, but it seems those frays are a weak area for a lot of guilds.
It became pretty evident to me that the majority of cards I was using were my Gold Foil cards. Even during my regular battles. That prompted the strategy change. I basically moved all of my non gold foil and gold foil duplicate cards to a different account and I am now renting all of those cards out via that account and the Splinterrents service.

I still play my brawls and I still do my season/daily quests, but those are easily accomplished with my GF cards. I was worried that offloading so many cards would push me down into Silver or Bronze, but I can still achieve Diamond II if I wanted with my existing deck.

I have been pulling in on average 5000 DEC per day in rentals and I have to pay about 200 per day for that. I am not sure what I am going to do with all this extra DEC now, but I like the idea of stacking it. Being able to earn a passive income with my cards is awesome!

Bro

In case you missed it, the BRO teams is launching a new token called LEGION. Presale is already taking place I think for Dragon members. Those are people who hold at least 1000 BRO tokens. I am a long way from that, so I am going to have to just wait for the general sale to start up.

I'll be honest, I didn't fully read the whitepaper. I'm not really the type to do my own research, I just degen into whatever looks shiny and new. That being said, the track record of the BRO team is pretty good. They have one of the best preforming tokens on the second layer of Hive right now, so it might be worth doing your own research (if you do that sort of thing).

Hive Accounts

I never could have guessed I would be in this position, but I have found myself thinking a lot lately about my "brand". Hive has become such a huge part of who I am, in fact, I said in a comment earlier today, "It is the hobby I never knew I wanted or needed". With that in mind, I have been thinking a lot lately about the "bozz" name.

Of course I am not the first one to use the nickname bozz, but here on Hive, it has become an integral part of who I am. Now imagine suddenly even 10% of the people who are leaving Twitter find themselves on Hive. We could easily see a run on big account names like we did in the early days of the Internet with people squatting domain names.

I've been using some of my account tokens to pick up accounts that pertain or are similar to the name "bozz". I even started creating some accounts that are my name in real life. It's highly unlikely that I will ever use those accounts, but that also means no one else can either.

@taskmaster4450 pointed out that this thinking is flawed. He posits that crytpo is the age of abundance. With so many opportunities to earn income, we likely won't be very concerned with how similar someones account name is to ours.

I can understand the idea behind that, but at the end of the day, our names are all we have sometimes. If protecting that is as simple as creating a couple of accounts and tucking the keys away, why wouldn't you?

What do you think about this? Is it not that big of a deal? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

That's a nice DEC income to have. Mine fluctuates quite a bit but averages 2-3k.

I didn't think about the branding part. Its nice to keep your own username everywhere though.

Yeah, we will see. I am hoping to roll my dec back into cards and maybe sell a little to build my HIVE stack.

Thats a good strategy. There are some good deals around at the moment. I am mostly unsure whether to level up any cards or not for higher rental income.

Yeah, it can be a tough decision. I've been stacking summoners for lands.

That makes sense, they will be needed for sure there.

Am just back from a walk in the park for Green Friday and the sun was shining, a glorious autumn day😃
It is ridiculous here in the UK with black Friday, any excuse to rip off customers! They record about 98% of so called Black Friday deals here are not a real discount at all.

I have heard the same thing here. It's bad how they manipulate the price to make people think they are getting a good deal.

@bozz I find your words very interesting, creating a brand and working on this platform full of opportunities, so I persevere too, although the strategies are not yet clear to me, but I always encourage myself to learn! Thanks for teaching!

All you can do is show up each day!

If creating a few accounts help secures your account, I don't think it's that bad of a thing to do. I am finally able to collect some account creation tokens and I never really felt like making another account because I didn't want to ask someone else for it. I haven't bothered but maybe I will consider it one day.

The cool thing is you can just keep claiming them, so why not. Could be a run on them one day. I doubt it, but you never know.

Every time I remember I go and claim account t creation tokens. It looks like I have about 80 right now. I was actually thinking about branding and was going to crest celebrity accounts and send them out. I’d love to see a mr beast or other YouTubers join hive.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens when more people start joining. If we get a few celebrities it could be nuts
