HIVE University (or some other clever name)

This is one of those days when I was having a really hard time trying to figure out what to write about. It isn't that there is nothing to write about, but I feel like many of the topics kicking around in my head can't or shouldn't be stretched into 500 plus words.

Why use 500+ words to say what you can in 300? What constitutes a "crap post"? Does including filler to hit that 500 word mark detract from the quality?

But I digress.

I was hanging out in the Leo Finance Discord chat the other day when a couple of people jumped in and started asking how they "earn LEO" or "earn HIVE". These people had just created new accounts on LEO and had no idea where to begin.

With onboarding tools like LEO Infra and projects from other groups popping up, I have a feeling we are going to see more and more of these cases where people have an account but they have zero idea what to do next.

As is typically the case, they made the comment that they made a post but it hadn't gotten any upvotes yet. I know pretty much all of us have been in that spot. We know the frustration of pouring your heart into something and having it just sit there with little attention or interaction.

I pointed out to them that for the first month or so they should focus mainly on commenting and maybe do an actual post only once per week. At least until they get a following and get their feet under them.

I know there are countless posts from many highly respected people on the blockchain about how to get started on Hive. I think @steevc did some and I know that @slobberchops had a series a while ago. Those can be difficult to find though and it got me thinking that maybe we need something better.

The gears in my head started turning and that is what led this into being a full fledged post instead of just an entry in my Friday Finance series tomorrow.

The Pitch

Let me be clear, I am just the idea man, I have no idea how to implement this stuff or if it would even be viable. What if we created something like Coinbase has with their earn program. Call it HIVE University. It would be composed of 10 to 20 mini video modules that walk you through different aspects, actions, and philosophies of the HIVE ecosystem. After completing each module you earn .1 - .5 HIVE or something like that.

We could even use the Hive Development Fund or whatever it is called to have the funds available for the rewards. Of course someone (not me) would have to create a proposal for it and it would have to gather enough votes to break the return proposal and actually get funded.

The cool thing is after people complete this "boot camp" or "university" (call it what you will), they will have some HIVE sitting in their account.

As I was thinking about this, I immediately started to realize that people would likely abuse this service and create countless new accounts to run through the videos and take the free HIVE. I think there would need to be some kind of check in place to keep people from doing this. I am not a fan of KYC, so I would be hesitant to go that far, but clearly something would need to happen.

I know that you can send HP to people versus liquid HIVE. This might be an option and would at least force them to have to power it down before they can cut and run.

Another option would be upping the rewards from the videos and just giving them a delegation to get them started. After they have proven they are committed to the platform for three to six months, then you reward them the full amount as HP? I think that would require more overhead on the admin side as you now need people actively monitoring those accounts.

Like I said, all of that would need to be laid out in the proposal. If you are just doing a delegation, you could roll those rewards back into the program so that hopefully it would end up being self sustaining and not rely on the HBD Fund beyond the initial award.

I mentioned in a comment the other day that when you are on here every day you see posts popping up every second and it easy to forget that in the grand scheme of things we are still relatively small in terms of a community.

There will be a point where we start to grow exponentially and many people are going to find themselves here with little clue about how or where to proceed.

At the very least, I think we need some kind of official documentation linked to the https://hive.io page and even better the community front ends to give people an idea of how to get started once they have an account created. This is also the first and best chance to set the record straight about expectations for earning on HIVE.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Is it viable? Are there any glaring holes I am missing? Are you willing to take up the mantle and write the proposal for the DHF?

I was thinking of writings book on how beginners could get acquainted with the hive blockchain.

I have released the chapter 1 and 2 on my blog.

I will be releasing the chapter 3 this week

Chapter 2

That's great, but I think we need something more official. I think a lot of people have written some great stuff, but it is just too difficult to find for the newer users.

It could be organized.

Get a compendium..

There does need to be some set of tutorials that all new users get directed to. Hive is complex and different to other social platforms. I wrote my post (pinned on my feed) so I had something when I introduced someone. I will keep updating it and will link to other resources to avoid duplication. Someone has already translated it into Japanese. We need to cover all languages.

Some of the dapps have FAQs or other help. Anything that pays people to take the course needs measures to prevent abuse. It could be possible to assign tasks to a new user and then it is possible to check if they followed a certain number of people or made some comments before they got paid. There could be some manual checks for abuse. It's up to the community to do these things. What's going to happen when the next million users sign up?

A don't have all the answers, but I'll do what I can to help.

Yeah, that was definitely my first thought. If there is a way to abuse it people will do it sadly. I like the idea of manual checks, but that adds a lot of overhead. Your comment about the net million users is really good though and I think it speaks towards the heart of my post. If we want them to stay and we want them to be good members of the community, we need to help them get there.

Manual methods do not scale too well, but if we can train up each generation of users who will inform their friends then we may get somewhere. Newbies definitely need help with the basics like key management and on what is acceptable behaviour.

There would definitely be a lot of logistics that need to be figured out. Like I said, I am just the idea man. Putting everything into practice can be someone else's problem :)

It's a cool idea. I thought about it in the past something similar...

I have mentioned having proper onboarding (both for new Hive users and also another for developers) but the Hive community doesn't really like spending the fund on anything that won't directly lead to them making more money it seems, so the idea stalls with trying to convince people that new, active, earning members is good for all of us.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but for now I continue writing tutorials for my authority bloggers community and helping people there.

Like someone else mentioned, maybe we need to just curate all of this great stuff that everyone else has already created into one single location. That might be a good first step. Keep doing what you do! Every little bit is helpful!

I think there also needs to be some tutorials and learning about the Hive was a struggle when I first started. There is just so many things being added and so many different parts that it's easy to get lost. Personally I think putting them into places like @leomarkettalk and have people talk about it is better.

I think that is a good place to share them, but having that be THE place for them would still make them too difficult to find for the first time user. Especially on Leo Finance where only a fixed number of posts from the past 24 hours show up on my feed before I get the "no more posts" message or whatever it is.

This post reminds me of my latest experience with dappback. It's some website where you earn points for doing tasks like accessing websites and learning about certain projects/communities. When I started "clicking left and right", according to the site I was supposed to be able to claim 0.03 ETH with 4000 points, but when I got to 2,000 points that threshold changed to 6,000 points. The crypto world is not such a fair place, but we're lucky to be on Hive where morals are quite obvious.

Ouch, talk about bait and switch. That is horrible. Not surprising I guess given how many people and places there are out there that are trying to take advantage of people. The said thing is they just keep doing it because they can get away with it. Yes, I am very happy to be on Hive. Way better citizenship here!

Excellent idea, and I can only imagine the amount effort, thought, and dev time would be substantial. The problem with coinbase and maybe here too, would be those who just don't care but looking for the quick coin. I think the videos or tutorials should be viewed in their entirety or idk. I wonder how many newbies sign that sign up, are here for the quick buck vs the long haul.

Either way, navigating the terrain when one first arrives is a bit messy. Your right that it needs to be cleaned up and some sort of mandatory training implemented.

I think a post with more than 100 words is good. Anything less should be absolutely brilliant not to be crap. I see some artist post their painting and get pissed when people say they didn't even write 10 words to go with it, yet earn big payouts. Their argument is that the work went into the painting.. that's their art, not writing. I disagree with that. There is ALWAYS something to say about your art or photography or what ever. After all this is a blogging platform. If we market Hive as a social media platform similar to redit, facebook or instagram, then we better change our minds on what's crap and what's not.

How many words do I have here? Let's see .. 222!

Comments are totally different! Anything over 50 words and I fall asleep. 😀

I don't think the videos should necessarily be mandatory, but you have to watch them if you want to earn that extra coin.

I agree, you can find at least a little to say.

This post caught my attention immediately! I'm from Venezuela Greetings, Recently I entered hive looking for the educational part within the same platform, however, I did not find anything, it helps me a lot that I am self-taught, in fact I graduated from the Open University, now the whole blockchain issue is new for me , Your idea seems fantastic to me, a University on hive, excuse my ignorance, it catches my attention as this is a project with a view to global expansion, how can we not incorporate an educational system to prepare ourselves properly in decentralized platforms and in the transition to web3?

I like the idea and for my part what I'm going to learn, I'm sharing with other people so they can get to hive, it's definitely not easy, that's why I want to be part of this!

I think just getting people here is one of the hardest steps, so if you can get that out of the way then you are probably going to be golden. Reading posts and commenting asking questions to learn is never a bad move.
