Random Friday Financial Thoughts

I got the chance to do some catching up with @cryptoandcoffee the other day. It was nice as we haven't chatted in a while. Working in a school district, August and September are notorious for being hectic and crazy.

Teachers start coming back and needing help getting their classrooms in order. On top of that, @iikrypticsii and I have been working on getting Chromebooks distributed to all of our students. Okay, mostly @iikrypticsii on that last part.

In any event, it is a nutzo time and I know my posting and engagement on here have been suffering because of it.

I happened to mention to @cryptoandcoffee that my post rewards seemed to be much lower than they had been in the past. I nearly had to kick myself when he mentioned about the curation delegation being removed from several accounts. Duh, I read about that, I knew that had happened. I guess I just didn't expect that it would impact me.

It actually makes me a little sad, but probably not for the reason you think. Sure, the rewards were nice, but I know those are never guaranteed. What bugs me the most is now I am questioning the quality of my work. I have seen many people comment that the curators were just circle jerking and things like that.

What does that say about my content then? They were just upvoting me because I upvote them no matter the quality of my content? Sorry, I don't buy that. It might have been happening in some cases, but I've gotta believe that isn't the case here. Otherwise, where does that leave me?

Being honest, I don't really pay much attention to who upvotes me. Sure, every now and then one of my posts will get some impressive rewards and I am like "woah", so I go and see where the votes came from. For the most part though, I just do my thing and comment on what I like. Sure I try to target my curation a little towards posts I think might earn me some money, but I am pretty lackadaisical about it and still vote on stuff that isn't as highly rewarded.

A far cry from those who micromanage every detail of their curation to eek out every last reward possible.

Like the title says, these are just some random thoughts. I'm not saying I deserve more rewards, what I do ask is that I don't be labeled as an "abuser" (I haven't by the way as far as I know) for something that likely happened by chance, not intentionally.

As part of that conversation above, we also got talking about our investments and crypto portfolios which is usually the case. We were a good deal into our conversation when a bit of an epiphany hit me and I was struck by the words I have heard @taskmaster4450 say over and over again.

"Age of Abundance"

As @cryptoandcoffee and I were talking, I realized that three years ago when we first kind of "met" and started our conversations we would talk in terms of tens and hundreds of dollars. Occasionally we might have a token that pushed us into a range a little higher than that (most likely HIVE), but it was pretty rare.

Those conversations have definitely shifted in the past three years. Now when we discuss tokens and portfolios, we are talking thousands of dollars and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. I can only imagine what our conversations will sound like in another three years.

Crypto feels a lot like a giant snowball rolling down a hill. We would be the snow on the ground. Some of us get picked up at different points in the journey, but the important thing is that you are on board for the ride!

That's all the random thoughts I have for today. Okay, that probably isn't true, but that is all that you are getting from me in writing.

Have a blessed weekend my friends. Take some time to not watch the charts. Instead kick back, relax, and enjoy the fact that you are riding the snowball!

For me, I think it is possible that up votes can be given just not because the quality, but because the page has a powerful up vote. But you are right, the content plays a big rule in this as well.

Really everyone should be able to vote or downvote for whatever reason they want. It is their stake.

I think some of us who do better than average on Hive should accept that a large part of our rewards are not directly related to what we post as they are from automated votes that people may give us for various reasons. There are also things like SBI that are automated. As long as you are not dependent on any single voter then you should do okay. Whilst I appreciate the support I also value those who read and engage with my posts, which is why I upvote comments to give them something back. If Hive was purely about money it would be less interesting to me and I think it would stagnate anyway. People want to be social and this is a good place to do that.

A lot of the discussions I have with fellow Hivers are not really about money. I am more interested in how we grow the community. Anyway, $HIVE is doing well today.

Have a great weekend.

I totally agree with that. I think people seem to frown upon it though. For example I put you on autovote because I know you consistently post good stuff. I try to read them all, but I miss some here and there so I want to make sure you get rewarded. I don't think stuff like that should be frowned upon or considered a malicious vote circle. Some people don't see it that way though.

I think people seem to frown upon it though.

Some people do. Opinions will vary. My own small auto-votes are to help @tenkminnows, but it's mostly manual. That means I will miss some posts by friends, but then it helps spread my votes further and I would prefer them to go to posts I actually read. I have said before that if a post has decent rewards already then I may give it less. I think a higher proportion of manual votes would improve Hive as good content would do better. As it is a small set of people will get huge rewards every time regardless. Remember than many struggle to even get $1 on a post.

I hear you there. I likely would not still be here if I had to do everything manually. I just can't justify the time commitment with everything else I have going on in life. As my account grows, that may shift, but major life things would have to happen first.

Crypto feels a lot like a giant snowball rolling down a hill.

Hive feels a lot like a giant snowball rolling down a hill.

There corrected it for you.

The Age of Abundance is on its way. Get ready for it. We can see it emerging.

:) no, I feel that way about WAX and other cryptos/projects besides Hive too. I understand what you are saying though. Besides current happenings with Splinterlands, Hive isn't even my largest holding now which is pretty unbelievable looking back.

I prefer the manual curation. It just makes this place feel more like a community rather than a money-making venture. Each vote matters. I will admit I need to broaden my view a little more and start getting to some of the lesser seen posts. That will happen over the winter. Summer is just so busy IRL that it's hard to spend the time but it's important. Especially as we get more and more new people joining with Splinterlands blowing up as well as a few other projects coming down the pike.

I do my fair share of manual curation, but I simply don't have the time to do it 100%. I would need to quit my job just to focus on that full time. I feel like there are many posts I miss as well. It is hard to find the time and ambition to jump outside your feed though.

I think as more and more users join then it will have to become more manual curation. I would say mine is more like 70 /30 right now with manual being the best way. If you rely on one or two votes you will end up coming a cropper somewhere along the line. Manual does grow you account and your following.

It looks like we are seeing the changes after the hard fork. At the very least, I think it will pay off over time no matter what happens.

As someone that still suffers with commenting and reading others posts and trying to get out of my own circle, I can whole-heartedly say the content and posts I have read from you are entertaining and a lot of times a good learning experience. What's more, you post pretty much every single day, it's gonna be hard to find extremely hard-hitting posts to make these blow-up posts.

Posting consistent with good content is way better than posting once in weeks and having that blow up for 50 Hive. Keep up the consistency and you will be at the top.
