The death of email?

avatar

image.png

I was getting ready to send out an email at work the other day and I suddenly found myself wondering if it was even worth it. It seems like many times these days emails go ignored or viewed, but not actually read. Working at a school district, I have a large number of my users who figuratively "shut off" their email for the summer.

It never fails, I always have a handful of users who come into my office at the beginning of each school year asking me to reset their password because they forgot it. It blows me away. For me, checking and using your email should be just as much a part of your job as clocking in and clocking out (if you aren't salary).

If you are salary then it should just be a part of your day to day responsibilities. Required, not optional.

I remember my first introduction to email. My parents had a PC with dial up access that my dad used to connect to bulletin board services, but it wasn't until one day at college that I discovered Electronic Mail.

I was working in the library at a local community college and the IT department set me up with an email account. You could only access it via a Unix terminal and it ran on a system called PINE. It was totally text based, but it was absolutely amazing.

Suddenly my buddy and I could send messages to each other in an instant since he was also attending the same college. My fiancee at the time had AOL or one of the other early dial up services, so her and I were also able to suddenly communicate instantaneously.

Sure, I could have just picked up a phone too, but I have always had a bit of "phoneaphobia". I hate talking on the phone. I hate talking in person honestly. If I have the chance to write something instead of saying something, I would just rather do that. I just feel I am better at it.

Anyway, it wasn't long before I had my own Yahoo account and the rest is history. If you had told me back then I would eventually have 10 or more email accounts, I probably wouldn't have believed you.

The other day I got thinking about email and the dilemma I seem to face every year at work. I also got thinking about how little people seem to check their emails and it made me start to wonder if it was a generational thing.

With the advent of Discord, Whatsapp, Snapchat, and IM's, does the current generation even have or check their email accounts anymore?

I figured a good Hive/Leo post should have some facts to back it up, so I started doing a little Googling about email use. Surprisingly, it appears that I was off quite a bit on my assumption.

Searching for "Do millennials use email" brought me to this page. Granted, this site (and the majority of other ones I found) are focused specifically on email marketing, but I figure if you are reading the junk mail in your inbox, you are more than likely reading the important stuff too.

As I said, surprisingly across all demographics, they felt that email is the most preferred channel for marketing materials. Those same demographics feel that it is the most personal method of communication versus other social media forms.

Of course, since that site is specifically dealing with marketing, people could be saying they prefer email over other forms of communication because it is just easier to ignore an email.

Then I found this other site from 2017 (which I know is a bit old), but they actually break down each form of communication and give some feedback on it.

As I said, the results were pretty well tipped in favor of email. At least for Millenials they prefer that form of communication because:

Millennials appreciate the Email message because of the lack of timelines, allowing them time to actually think and reply at their leisure.

Pretty interesting. I don't know what that says for Generation Z, but I would assume the results are going to be somewhat similar. Especially when you take into account he poll results from the earlier page I mentioned.

I really thought this was going to turn out different. All you have to do is look at the title of this post and you would realize I thought email was going the way of the fax machine. Clearly that isn't the case. It still doesn't explain why people think it is okay to just ignore their email for three months out of the year, but that appears to be a totally different issue.

What do you think? If you are from one of the younger generations, what is your preferred method of contact and correspondence?

That is a good point that e-mails are async communication methods and they allow information to sink and be able to reply more thoughtfully to it rather than reactive as the current sync social media usually imply.

Very true. I still struggle with it though. I often reply to an email right away and realize I should have waited a little longer.

I've had email for a long time and I still use it a fair bit, but a lot of communication happens over messaging apps these days. For work it's nice to have the 'paper trail' of email, but it can get too much at times when people CC everyone in. There may be better ways to handle that. Email is insecure, but I could never get people to use encryption.

I used to have a secure email address on a platform, but I can't remember what the name of it was now. I used to love Keybase too, but no one really uses that anymore.

A friend uses ProtonMail which is encrypted. I liked Keybase, but it hasn't taken off. I was a fan of PGP/GPG, but that tends to be too complex for most people.

ProtonMail is what I had an account in. My wife's cousin did some work for them so I had a free account at one point.

I had always thought maybe emails are going away too. But look around, if you want to open a social media account, you will always be required to put in a mail or phone number.

And even though one might have to choose one or the other, they will soon find out, that they need the emails more whenever a situation arises that needs to be fixed.

Communicating to and fro with a certain company whose services you are using is made easier by mailing them. And if they have good customer service, getting a response quicker than you could imagine, makes a lot of sense.

This means it could take a while before emails become obsolete. Until then, let those selling with email marketing enjoy, have fun, and make as many bucks as they can. Cheers.

Great point! It is crazy the number of people who use their phone number for things these days though. That is part of the reason I created a Google Voice number, so I can keep things separate.

You sound as though it's a bad move... Is it?

What does a Google Voice number do?

Google Voice routes my calls and gives me a voicemail only number that I can use when I am required to provide a number. It's not bad, it's just different. Email accounts have pretty robust spam protection. Phone numbers still do not.

As long it is for personal use no. It is only available in some areas though, so you might run into restrictions depending on where you live.

I have mostly used email for sending resumes over time, but not much of a fan anymore. It feels like yesterday when I was thinking how easy it is to reach out to employers via an email rather than other application forms.

We have instant messaging built into our work email through Google, so I think a lot of people have moved to that versus email.

It feels as though email hasn't moved on from the beginning of the internet, but it's still one of my preferred contact methods, especially for formal things.

I think email will don't die because in the business world it is necessary to a lot of conversations.

Email can also be used as a proof that you sent that. Otherwise, whatsup, telegram, etc it is not valid in the business world.

In my company, the email it is very important because we have clients in other countries, and sometimes we cannot reach the people in the chats. So we need to send an email with the information.

With instant messengers, this made the idea a lot less useful.

It is like newspapers, it is a generational thing.

E-mail is for certain useful as a marketing medium. It's also useful if you're part of a medical network which insists on doing everything online.

About the only thing e-mail isn't used for is personal correspondence, but even then e-mail comes in handy for anything where documentation of some sort is needed and mobile devices are insufficient for that.

Of course, e-mail was social networking before the term was invented.

E-mail is more useful to me than FAXing even though FAX machine technology has been around since the mid-1800s. We still use FAX machines (if only to comply with certain legal provisions for contract recognition).

One thing about Whatsapp, Telegram, etc. compared to emails is the indeed the feeling of a hurry. Maybe because people can see when you are online or if the message is read. Of course, this can be changed but I still have that subconscious feeling in the back of my head while using those.
With emails, it's more laid back cos you can't tell if it's read. Or can you? 😅 That's why I don't add my bosses to contacts on TG and others a like,

Email is an open protocol, so anyone can spin up their own server to send and receive mails, all the options you listed are walled gardens, data farms, subsidsed by other people

So no email isn't going away

True, but use of it definitely seems to be waning. The general public doesn't care about the security stuff we do. Joe public doesn't care about data mining. They just want to be entertained.

they'll care when they get deplatformed or the severs don't work, or they monetise those platforms and it's not a free for all. Besides email is a staple communication medium for business, you're not going to swap that out for IMs, especially with sensitive data, when you run your own server you can keep that stuff in-house and provide more security.

If you're using IMS and a bot net attacks it how many would just click the link? Enough to make it profitable I can tell you that much

Like I said, I use email every single day. I am just writing about what I am seeing. If younger employees are checking their mail every day, they are ignoring about 70% of the total emails that come into their boxes.

E-mail is not going away, no matter how many use it or don't.

E-mail would seem to be a natural match for blockchain, especially if privacy protections were added. There may be blockchain-powered e-mail services, but I haven't found them or investigated them if they exist.

5 years this has been happening to me, it started here, around people that are still here. Homeland security has done nothing at all, they are not here to protect us. Dont we pay them to stop shit like this? The NSA, CIA, FBI, Police and our Government has done nothing. Just like they did with the Havana Syndrome, nothing. Patriot Act my ass. The American government is completely incompetent. The NSA should be taken over by the military and contained Immediately for investigation. I bet we can get to the sources of V2K and RNM then. https://peakd.com/gangstalking/@acousticpulses/electronic-terrorism-and-gaslighting--if-you-downvote-this-post-you-are-part-of-the-problem

Instant messaging apps including things like Teams and Slack are all the rage now and while they are convenient for certain things, they are no replacement for email. I find it very useful to be able to search past email (and I keep it all). Doing that with these fly by night instant messaging things isn't possible when your company has switched applications three times in five years... I swear that even for that sort of thing we should be using IRC.

I haven't logged into IRC in literal decades. I used to be on it all the time back in the day though. Such fun stuff! Yeah, I think a lot of businesses are going the Slack route.

See, I totally understand why people set their filter up to only accept messages from friends, because I do get a lot of spam. I find that it's mostly people looking for invites to get whitelisted on new crypto projects...which I actually like, and I commonly ask them if they're willing to trade invites for invites. I do however get the occasional scammer trying to find a way to steal my keys. I'm confident in my ability to discern scammers and never click anything that would give them access to any of my keys, so I leave my filter off and let anyone who wants to contact me.

I guess a lot of it depends on if there is a native app for your mail client. Gmail makes it pretty easy to check just like you would a text. If I had to login to a site. That would probably be a deal breaker for me.

I still use email a fair bit, even have several different email addresses for different purposes (i.e one for things i sign up to and am not really sure if i'll stick with that service - this is also my spam catcher address).

One thing that always struck me as odd or funny, though it doesn't happen as often these days, is the e-mail i got from friends, who then proceeded to call or text and ask if i got the e-mail.

Personally, I think despite the instant messaging services out there, e-mail will be with us for a long time to come yet. !hivebits

In particular, I use my email on a daily basis, I see that it is a more comfortable and discreet place compared to other social networks, also less invasive, in my interest in learning about marketing, I follow experts who use email marketing as a powerful tool, In fact, I am very aware of the emails that they send to document me, in the same way I consider that to have a protected database of your clients, you must take it into account!
