As Steve says in this quote, but it is hard to do, you really have to practice not having envy towards others.

A lot of wise people know and have known this. The Christian faith has known this for a long time.

"Sin of jealousy over the blessings and achievements of others, especially the spiritual enjoyment and advance of the kingdom of Christ freely and graciously bestowed upon the people of God.

Envy inevitably leads to personal harm and debilitation, affecting one's physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being ( Job 5:2 ; Prov 14:30 )

It took me a long time to deside to go after what I wanted in life and stop looking at what others have.

I agree that envy and jealousy is bad. It never made anyone happy or gave them a better life. But is that what the quotation is about? To me it talks about control over events and circumstances.
For example, if I am employed I have no power over what my boss assigns me to do, and can't tell him to raise my wages. I have to do my job and survive on the money I get. But I do have the power to look for another job, or a cheaper place to live, and I certainly do have the power to decide what to buy and cook for dinner to make the money last, so that's where I should excert my control instead of fretting.
