Another nearby point of interest is the monument of the discoveries. A modern tribute to the ancient navigators who set sail in search of new worlds from the Tower of Belem or other points of the Tagus River in the vicinity of Lisbon.

Nice to greet you again friends of #Liketu and #POB.

This is my post for the participation in the #POBphotocontest organized weekly by @friendlymoose and this time it's about historical places, squares or buildings.

In the last 3 months I have been traveling a lot around Spain and Portugal for work reasons and, therefore, it has been difficult for me to choose a historical building or place to share with you among the many photographs I have of cathedrals, castles, towers or even mines from the Roman Empire.

After a time of review of my photo library and because I was watching the soccer match on TV between Portugal and Spain, I finally decided to choose for this contest the Belém Tower located on the banks of the Tagus River in Lisbon, in the district of Belém.

This tower was built in the early sixteenth century for purely defensive purposes of the city of Lisbon. Subsequently, it has had other uses such as, for example, it has also been a prison and also as a lighthouse.

This tower has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

In the vicinity of the tower there are two points of interest that I recommend visiting at the same time as this tower.

The first point of interest that I recommend to remember, since it is on the same bank of the Tagus River, is the monument of the discoveries. It was built as a tribute to the various relevant people in the golden age of Portugal in terms of the discovery of new worlds by its sailors.

The second point of interest near the Belém Tower that I recommend visiting is the Jeronimos Monastery, which is a monastery of the religious order of the Hieronymites and in turn in an extension that had later houses the national museum of archeology of Portugal.

Have a nice week.
