Brave Continues To Take On Google With Privacy Search Engine

avatar

Hey Jessinternet users

I've been using Brave browser for some time, not only because I get drips of their native token BAT, but because it's so much faster, I see fewer ads, and overall it's a good product. Since it's built on chromium, moving from chrome to Brave is almost seamless, and it's become my preferred browser on both desktop and mobile.

I've earned around $200 in BAT at the current price, so that's been a pretty sweet bonus. I really like the product, and the project and have held on to the BAT I've earned as I feel it could be worth much more as it's service catches on.

I don't think he token itself is bringing in people; yes, it's part of it, but having a good product worth using has made brave an easy sell.

Brave is not without its teething issues

I've been positive on Brave, but the project has been stagnant in terms of innovation, and with the high fees on ETH, their tokens distribution system hasn't been practical.

I also have issues with how the content creator rewards are set up as it's not a native user action and relies far too much upon altruism as a distribution mechanic.

Their current ad network is also centralised and is run manually via the brave team instead of having an open auction network which I think should be a focus area for improvement.

Brave ads are also limited to the browser. I would like to see it expanded into a service that can be integrated on any website or alternative social media sites to expand its inventory.

Given these shortcomings, I've not paid much attention to Brave. However, with the latest announcement, I am more bullish than ever on the project.

Tailcat and Brave

Brave has recently announced that it will be launching its own search engine to complement its browser and expand its service. The company have recently acquired a search engine service known as Tailcat. From the announcement, we can see that Brave search will have opt-in ads similar to Google Adwords and Presearch.

This is extremely bullish news as Brave continues to increase its userbase. Its search engine doesn't even have to break Google's monopoly to be a success; Bing (Microsoft's backed search engine) isn't more than 5% of global use, and it's pretty profitable even with that small section of the market.

This shows the amount of money available in search, and if Brave can channel even 1% of that income into its ecosystem, then its token should benefit from the influx of capital and new use case for running ads.

A Brave new world

Brave has a long way to go. It's going to start chipping away at Google's market share. Taking on a 1 Trillion dollar market cap company isn't going to be easy, and Google won't give up market share without a fight.

I do think that the adoption curve and narrative is on Brave's side as Google has failed to integrate web 3.0 services as yet.

Then if we factor in the growing distaste for big tech and a crypto incentive structure that rewards users, you have the potential recipe for a real attack on Google's dominance.

Have your say

I've been using it for years and I'm not disappointed. Brave is great!

Me too! I hope they continue to innovate I’m also waiting for their roll out of the ad marketplace that’s going to awesome and with the data they can capture they can be even more accurate for Advertsing so advertisers will be willing to pay and users get more revenue

I use the Brave browser as well. I have been doing so for more than a year and it's pretty good and the ad revenue which is a plus.

There are a lot of search engines but I think they can scale given their userbase. So this is a plus for the brave network. Bullish signs

They also mentioned their interest to get into defi. I think they've got a lot of interesting plans going forward.

This is the article I saw on twitter some days back about the announcement:

Thanks for the link, looks good, I am keen to see how that one unfolds, the more users for BAT the better I suppose. I just want to see them focus on their core product and not get too hopped up on all this de-fi madness

Wait some people don't use brave.... wow lol
Been using it since the day it released :) Even before they paid out ads. That's just a nice little $5 - $10 bonus each month.

At the moment brave and also Netbox is my choice of browser.
I wonder if they want to move their token into other fee friendly chain like BSC or hive that will be nice. Also I have never know that those ads are distributed manually, not by the smartcontract or something autonomous on the blockchain.

I am not sure they are interested in the blockchain all that much, I was listening to the interview with their founder and their project is focused on the product, blockchain just happens to be an easier method to distribute tokens, so I don't think its really about the whole chain hype.

Will they have their token on other chains? I think that's very possible, but they are sending their tokens via uphold to get around that for now and with ETH's new hard fork, I think they may not need it too much, its not the core of their business

I'm using five browsers, including brave and dissenter. Havnt used Google search in years, it's a deep state scam, using duck duck go but always looking for a better one

Chrome sucks but I use chromium on linux. Blows my mind that chrome is the most popular windows browser, I rate it worst of the five, with this being my list...firefox, opera, brave, dissenter, chrome.

Still using firefox for default because I've been using it for 16 years, but its a total sell out these days

Lol how do you keep up switching browsers all the time, I do still have safari on my phone and mac but never use it and I have firefox on my mac but I only jump on that if I need to check certain things most of the time im on brave

I have each one set up with the tags pinned as needed - so for example with multiple Hive accounts I have each one ready with peakd, hiveblog, hivestats, hiveblocks, and hivevote all logged in and ready to go on each different account

and i have a bunch of other sites where i'm doing the same - so my browser is my persona - frot is firefox (with purple add on) - the browser tells me who i am!

I heard about brave a lot but never used it. After such review a trial is a must guess.
Can we also use services like presearch on brave as that would be double delight 😀😀

Yes you can make presearch your default search engine on brave and double dip on those tokens. So you can earn in your browser, your searches and on HIVE so many tokens lol

I started using Brave yesterday. So far I'm investing time. 😄
Despite my very little knowledge about the crypto stuff, I felt like it's better to start doing before knowing, hoping I'll be safe in the meanwhile.
At the moment, it seems like nobody is losing, not Google nor Brave, like there's plenty of room for everyone. Then it would be great if Google felt threatened and decided to adapt and improve its services, of course. 😏

I feel you, I encourage anyone who wants to get into Cryptos to first start trading their time for it! Blog, use dapps and earn a bit so you have coins to mess around and understand a wallet before you go buying anything

I think it’s good practice, the knowledge you pick up is worth more than the coins you earn! I mean I’ve been using hive since 2016 never sold a token I jusy like to mess around with it my BTC that’s another story but tokens that’s for fub

I think you picked a great place to come and learn and if you have questions drop me a DM or a comment I’m happy to help

Oh there’s more than enough space for both there’s still a lot of internet users still to be born as more countries come online in greater ways especially in africa where I’m at

I do think goog needs competition, it’s the only way to keep a company lean and honest is to let them know if they don’t act right someone will take their lunch

No search engine has been able to challenge Google and that's a problem. Sites literally die because Google decide to change their algorithm and all of a sudden they get a tenth of the traffic.

To be fair to them, they do offer the best results when it comes to answering questions.

You're absolutely right, I remember not too long ago they changed their algo and killed a few crypto media sites, can't remember the name. They've grabbed a lot of features from Bing and DuckDuckGo and with their bigger reach and data points were able to give better results.

I agree their results are far more personalised and accurate but at what cost? Theres so many unseen costs because of this that we will never even know

I like Brave and I use it but I feel like I always get screwed on getting BAT. Do you have to claim it each month or something?

Nope you just click the ads and let it pile up! You will need to register with uphold and sync the browser account to get access to the tokens! You can then send them where you want or swap them directly in uphold for another coin

So if I didn't register on each browser do the past months earnings disappear ?

I have an Uphold account and like it in general but I hate the fact that they made the browser like that to where you can't just have access to it in the Browser

No, it shouldn't go away, once connected to uphold all your earned tokens should be moved over, at least that was for me because I didn't use uphold in the beginning because I didn't want to KYC for 4$ but then it started stacking up so I thought fuckit.

Not sure, if they changed it since then

Yeah I don't like it either but it wouldn't be economical to run on-chain wallets with the current gas price so custodial we have to be. I guess they can always bridge with BSC or let it run on a side chain like MATIC but that makes it even more complicated and I don't think this is really the core focus of their business

Yeah I clicked on one of the things and it said I have to have 25 BAT before I can connect to Uphold. I have a feeling between all my browsers I won't ever be able to make anything off of it which would be real lame but maybe I can amp it up by clicking on a bunch of ads.

Ads have slowed down my side but I’m sure they focus mainly on the US so who knows you still may be able to bag that amount! I think I have about 180 or so BAT already and I’ve sold some off for BTC just to test upholds transfers so I’ve made well over 200 BAT using Brave over the last year

Also with a bull run advertisers may be more aggressive for your eye balls

The browser is collecting data point all the time and yes clicks are weighted highly but its also part of a bigger set of data and how you should be served ads
