Boundaries, Restrictions and Limitations

Life is funny in that we all seem to be chasing something. We're all chasing this elusive idea of "being free" of society. We all thing that the ultimate freedom is being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

Yes, this is a good aspect of life. Freedom is amazing and the freedom to choose what you do is incredible. I spent my whole life working to be financially free. Free from burden. Free to pursue whatever I felt like pursuing.

But I also found it to be a new kind of cage.

Being too free is a thing.

Boundaries

Set boundaries for yourself. If you are free like me, then it means you don't have a boss. I work for myself. I work on things that I love to work on. I spend my day thinking and working on things that are passionate for me.

I believe in some larger goal that I'm chasing.

That being said, it becomes really easy to just not do anything. It becomes easy to get complacent. Since nobody is setting any boundaries or restrictions for me, I find that it's hard to stay on the path to achieve what I want.

Self-Discipline

Self-Discipline is the key here. You need to learn that boundaries, restrictions and limitations can help you... Not hinder you!

Live an examined life. Be the type of person who is ever-curious and is always asking if they can do better in life. I love this show called Billions. In it, the main character - Bobby Axelrod - is faced with tons of problems on a daily basis.

Instead of mindlessly solving one problem after another, he's always asking himself how he can be better. He's always questioning why he acted a certain way.

He's often prompted into these self-talks by his sidekick: A therapist named Wendy.

Wendy is always forcing him to think about hard questions. Why did he do this? What deeper meaning is behind this?

He is faced with a major restriction at one point in the show. He loses the ability to do the thing he loves most. Wendy tells him that sometimes restrictions are a great thing. Sometimes they force us to home in on what's important.

Sometimes they force us to live a more examined, discipline and fulfilled life.
