CHAPITRE IV

Le moment où Philémon est tombé éperdument amoureux de Baucis est un moment dont je veux vous parler. Bien qu'ils soient parvenus à trouver un équilibre important dans leur relation, comme c'est généralement le cas pour tous les couples du monde, il leur arrivait aussi d'entrer en conflit. Il s'agissait de deux personnes au caractère très différent, ce qui, d'une certaine manière, les rendait complémentaires. Mais parfois, leurs façons de comprendre la vie et leurs visions du monde ne s'accordaient pas parfaitement. Un jour, donc, ils ont eu l'une des querelles les plus sincères. Baucis aimait souvent contredire Philémon, la confrontation avec elle devenant un jeu intellectuellement stimulant. Il se trouve qu'elle a exagéré et, comme cela arrive souvent quand on exagère, quelqu'un a risqué d'être blessé. Ils parlaient d'un couple d'amis très proches qui s'étaient disputés pour des raisons insignifiantes et qui avaient l'intention de se disputer pour savoir qui avait tort et qui avait raison. Philémon a exprimé sa théorie :

<<À mon avis, Hadès a eu tort envers Kore. D'accord pour les désaccords et les malentendus, mais lorsque vous vous rendez compte que l'autre partie est à bout de patience, il est inutile d'insister avec des provocations stupides.>>

Bauci a répété : <<Kore a réagi de manière excessive. Hadès ne faisait que plaisanter... il n'y avait pas besoin d'aller si loin. >>

Philémon poursuit ses propos :

<<Oui, Bauci, mais la patience a des limites ! Nous sommes faits de chair et d'esprit. Une attitude hostile et humiliante comme celle d'Hadès à l'égard de son ex-petite amie n'est certainement pas un grand signe de respect... Il faut aussi être capable de se tenir au milieu de la société >>.

Voyant Philémon ferme et insistant sur sa position, Bauci s'irrita et dit quelque chose qui blessa profondément son bien-aimé :

<<Vous parlez de savoir être au milieu de la société... alors que depuis deux ans vous vous êtes éloigné du monde parce que vous vous êtes créé des problèmes inutiles. Quoi ? Tu as déjà oublié ?

La raison pour laquelle Bauci tenait tant à prendre la défense d'Hadès n'était pas claire. Après tout, ils ne faisaient que parler de ce qui s'était passé. Peut-être parce que, comme le montrait sa dernière déclaration, ce côté d'Hadès reflétait un côté de Bauci qui n'était pas encore sorti. Le fait est qu'en entendant ces paroles grossières et inattendues, Philémon s'est senti désemparé au point de fondre en larmes de déception :

<<Tu te rends compte de la méchanceté dont tu parles ? ! Dieu seul sait ce que j'ai traversé pendant cette période sombre de ma vie... et je pensais que toi aussi !>>

La vérité est que, quelle que soit notre capacité à comprendre les gens, nous ne pourrons jamais les comprendre pleinement si nous n'avons pas nous-mêmes vécu certaines situations. Philémon s'est levé et est parti. Il commença à être à nouveau tourmenté par ses doutes. Après le dîner, Bauci se prépara à la rejoindre, regrettant ce qu'il avait dit. Même s'il restait de ses théories, Bauci tenait profondément à Philémon et ne pouvait l'abandonner. Il aimait ce sourire constant sur ses lèvres qui le mettait de bonne humeur tout au long de la journée. Il aimait sa façon authentique de lui montrer son amour par de petits gestes sincères. Il aimait sa beauté mêlée au charme de son esprit. Il l'aimait. Il est donc allé la voir et lui a dit qu'il était désolé de l'avoir fait se sentir mal, de lui avoir fait repenser à de mauvaises situations dans son passé. Il lui a dit que tout ce qui comptait pour lui était de la voir heureuse et souriante. Il lui a dit de s'habiller parce qu'il l'emmenait manger des sushis. Il avait déjà réservé une table pour deux. C'est à ce moment-là que Philémon est tombé follement amoureux de sa bien-aimée. Elle était folle de Sushi ; il n'aimait pas du tout ça, mais il en mangeait quand même.

Pour Bauci aussi, il y a eu un moment décisif qui l'a fait tomber follement amoureux de Philémon. Ils avaient décidé d'aller à une fête ensemble et qu'il resterait ensuite chez elle. Le lendemain, à leur réveil, ils se sont rendus à la cuisine pour prendre leur petit-déjeuner. Bauci s'était levé plus tard ; Philémon avait déjà tout préparé et avait posé une boîte de céréales sur la table, à côté d'une tasse de café au lait et d'une tasse de café. Ils prenaient généralement leur petit-déjeuner dehors après s'être réveillés, ou l'un d'entre eux allait chercher deux pâtisseries au café en bas. Pourtant, il était étonnant de constater qu'avec très peu d'informations, Philémon était capable de connaître les habitudes de son bien-aimé : il ne mangeait que des cornflakes au petit-déjeuner, qu'il accompagnait de son café au lait. Lorsqu'il avait fini de boire dans sa tasse, il remplissait une tasse de café et la sucrait. Il a bu ça aussi, et au bout d'un moment, il a fermé un clapet.

Aussi, lorsque Bauci est entré dans la cuisine et qu'il a vu la boîte de céréales sur la table, il a demandé à Philémon, surpris : <<Tu les as achetées pour moi ? >>.

Elle, fière d'elle, a répondu que non, qu'elle les avait achetés pour elle-même. À ce moment-là, Bauci avait tout compris et était tombé amoureux de sa manière discrète de s'occuper des autres, une manière qui ne demandait rien en retour et qui ne ressentait pas le besoin de se manifester ouvertement, car elle était sincère et venait du cœur.

CHAPTER IV

When Philemon fell madly in love with Baucis is a moment I want to tell you about. Although they managed to find an important balance in their relationship, as is usually the case with all couples in the world, they too occasionally came into conflict. They were two very different character people and this, in a way, made them complement each other. But sometimes their ways of understanding life and their worldviews did not fit together perfectly. One day, therefore, they had one of the most heartfelt squabbles. Baucis often liked to contradict Philemon, as confrontation with her became an intellectually stimulating game. Then it happened that she exaggerated and, as often happens when one exaggerates, someone was in danger of getting hurt. They were talking about a couple of very close friends of theirs who had quarrelled for trivial reasons and were intent on arguing about who was wrong and who was right. Philemon expressed his theory:

<<In my opinion, Hades was wrong towards Kore. OK the disagreements and misunderstandings, but when you realise that the other side is running out of patience, it is useless to insist with stupid provocations.>>

Bauci reiterated: <>

Philemon continued his remarks:

<<Yes, Bauci, but patience has a limit! We are made of flesh as well as spirit. A hostile and humiliating attitude such as Hades' towards his ex-girlfriend is certainly not a great sign of respect... One must also be able to stand in the midst of society.>>

Seeing Philemon firm and insistent on her position, Bauci became irritated and said something that deeply hurt her beloved:

<<You speak of knowing how to be in the midst of society... when for two years you have estranged yourself from the world because you have created unnecessary problems for yourself. What? Have you forgotten already?>>

It was not clear why Bauci was so keen to stand up for Hades. After all, the two were simply talking about what had happened. Perhaps because, as his last statement showed, that side of Hades reflected a side of Bauci that had not yet come out. The fact is that, on hearing those crude and unexpected words, Philemon felt distraught to the point of bursting into tears of disappointment:

<<Do you realise the wickedness you speak?! God only knows what I went through in that dark period of my life... and I thought you did too!>>

The truth is that no matter how much we may be able to understand people, we will never fully understand them unless we have experienced certain situations ourselves. Philemon got up and left. He began to be tormented again by his doubts. After dinner Bauci prepared to join her, regretting what he had said. Even if he remained of his theories, Bauci cared deeply for Philemon and could not give her up. He loved that constant smile on her lips that put him in a good mood throughout the day. He loved her genuine way of showing him love with small, sincere gestures. He loved her beauty mixed with the charm of her mind. He loved her. So he went to her and told her he was sorry for making her feel bad, making her think back to bad situations in her past. He told her that all that mattered to him was seeing her happy and smiling. He told her to get dressed because he was taking her out for sushi. He had already booked a table for two. It was at that moment that Philemon fell madly in love with his beloved. She was crazy about Sushi; he did not like it at all, yet he ate it anyway.

For Bauci, too, there was a decisive moment that made him fall madly in love with Philemon. They had decided to go to a party together and that he would then stay over at her place. The next day, when they woke up, they went to the kitchen to have breakfast. Bauci had gotten up later; Philémon had already prepared everything and had placed a box of cereal on the table, next to a cup of latte and a cup of coffee. They usually had breakfast outside after waking up, or one of them would go out for two pastries at the café downstairs. Yet it was amazing how with very little information Philémon was able to work out what her beloved's habits were: for breakfast he only ate cornflakes and accompanied them with a latte. When he had finished drinking from his cup, he would fill a small cup with coffee and sugar it. He drank that too, and after a while he would close a chop.

So when Bauci came into the kitchen and saw the box of cereals on the table, he asked Philémon in surprise: <<Did you buy those for me? >>
She, proud in spirit, answered no, that she had bought them for herself. By this time Bauci had understood everything and fell in love with her discreet way of caring and taking care of others; a way that asked nothing in return and felt no need to manifest itself overtly, as it was sincere and came from the heart.
