North Bay Island and Ross Island One Day Trip

avatar

On the sixth day of our Andaman trip, we decided to travel 2 islands and those are North Bay Island and Ross Island. Since both the Islands are close to Port Blair, we can easily cover both the Islands in a day.

North Bay Island

The Island doesn't have much to offer for sightseeing options but it is one of the best places to do Water Sports on the Andaman Islands. People do argue whether to do the water activities in Havelock or North Bay. In my experience, the Havelock shore is much more beautiful than the North Bay since I have done the water activities on both the Islands.

I wanted to do the Scuba Driving and in the North Bay the cost of the Scuba Driving is almost half of that of Havelock Island and because of that, I thought of doing the Scuba Driving in North Bay.

One of the things is the water was not as clear as that of Havelock as well as the Corals were also not as beautiful as I have seen in Havelock Islands. But never the less getting an experience of Scuba Driving is a memory to hold for life long. With everyone, there is an extra driver comes along who actually checks if there is any problem while doing the scuba driving.

He usually asked me throughout the driving experience if I am Ok or not using sign language. I was ok, but there was some pressure on the ear and because of that I had to remove that pressure. This was told to us before the driving that if we get pressure on our ears what should we do. Overall it was a great experience and I have seen the marine life very closely by actually doing the Scuba Driving.

One of the interesting things the guide told us about North Bay is that the image of the North Bay is featured on the backside of Indian Rs. 20 note.

Since there was nothing much on the North Bay Island we have started our journey towards the Ross Island.

Ross Island

Ross Island is named after Captain Daniel Ross and later reamed as Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose Dweep. Like other islands where you usually get to see the beaches and all, Ross Island brings a bit of history and scenery.

It also has a Japanese Bunker from World War 1.

The island has a lighthouse and it is one of the tourist activities to go and see the lighthouse and get some cool photos of it. It is not like that, you do not have beaches in Ross island, the only thing is that you are not allowed to go in water here. The civilians settlements is prohibited in the Ross Island and because of that there is no place to stay at night here and thus everyone has to leave the island before dawn.

The lighthouse is from the far and you have to walk for some distance to get to the lighthouse and the surroundings of that walk are too good and everything is natural. You can actually see some of the islands from this island.

This island used to have an Administrative block of Britishers but it was abandoned after the earthquake in 1941, and not the ruins of these old buildings are still there. It includes the buildings and church. When the tsunami came these buildings are destroyed more and now the ruins are only thing remaining in this island.

And because of the Ross Island, the Port Blair was not that much affected by the Tsunami because it took most of the load.

There is a forest inside the island too which have a sanctuary of a variety of birds and animals including peacock and deer.

It was a good one day trip where we have done the Water Sports on North Bay Island too as well as have gone through some of the historical places on Ross Island. We also have seen too many deers roaming around and playing with humans. Though we have not spent too much time on Ross Island, it was a good few hours on the island.
