Why is it so hot? Ohhhhh, now I remember...

I hear him
quietly close the door behind him.

He thinks I am asleep.

But my thinking mind
has kept me up
since well before sunrise.

It's hot.

I'm laying in bed
wearing only underwear,
a light sheet draped over me
for the mentally-induced
sense of "safety" it brings,
but it's so hot
I could throw it off in a heartbeat.

Even with the windows open
and the fan on low all night long
at 4:55am
at this latitude
it is hot.

I don't need to get up yet.

Yes, I want to start drinking water
and go for a run
before it gets even worse
but the day is early;
the sun yet to break over the trees,
so I linger
on my sweaty side of our bed
a little longer.

I'm up.

Far out it's hot.

It's late January
and summer has finally arrived.

It's only about two months late.

Mostly naked in the kitchen
he smiles at me
as he kisses me hello.

We talk about how hot it is
and we remember:
Oh yes,
this is what a Brisbane summer
is really like.

How did we forget?

Image taken by me outside our lovely, very hot home.

I'm glad I could share this sunrise with you, @deraaa 😊

And what do you mean by "romantic oppression"? What did I write that made you think of that? (I ask with curiosity!)

(BTW, hi @iskafan! 👋)

Hello, @consciouscat, good morning

Don't worry, I'll wet your curiosity ( oh my goodness, why do I feel spoilt by using the word, 'wet' @deraaa 😅)

Over here, we tend to say someone is oppressing us if they have a good and beautiful thing going on in their lives and they are flaunting it(not flaunting with bad intentions, it's mostly used around people that we share a connection with, friends, family, or celebrities we are a fan of)

Right now, deraaa and I are feeling oppressed by the romantic scenes you created in here even though it's obviously hot, you have a handsome soul around that could make you forget that heat in an instant if .... Trails off .... Hahaha... Deraa will complete it for me 😃

Ohhhh, I get it! Thanks for clearing that up for me, @iskafan.

Just wait to I write the post I have stored in my head about jealousy (I'll probably write it in early Feb). I think you'll really like it and it could be really useful too (as you manifest amazing romance in your lives 😊).

So, I get it. I get it. I spent sooooo long single and in sometimes boring, sometimes abusive relationships, so I really, really get that this would feel oppressive (the way you use the word here).

In English, at least in Australia, we call it "showing off" and it is very much discouraged! "Flaunting" is also frowned upon!

But I try and hang out with people who celebrate my successes instead of feeling intimated or jealous of it. But if they can say, as you are, some version of "OMG, I'm jealous of that thing you have that I want" as deraaa did, in a playful way then there's no problem. It's just friends poking at each other playfully 😂😍🤗

BTW, Iska, do you want corrections to your English? I'm trying to remember if we've talked about that before? Most non-native speakers want to improve their English but they take it personally to receive corrections... so, asking for a friend 😂😂😂

I totally get the strife in friendships! I have experienced it had to make the decision to extract myself from their circle! I understand wanting to really enjoy what you have when you have spent so much time missing it.

Iskafan explained the term better than I ever could! Haha

Hahaha.... I know right?
This is certainly a romantic oppression, @deraaa . And it's a beautiful one at that 🥰😍

Ohhh, it makes you feel nostalgic. How interesting 🤔 It reminds you of something from your past that you miss?

I think so; reminds me my infancy, I believe. And my old house. Nice times but so long ago...

I really liked your poem🖤

Wonderful atmospheric verses. They capture the moment very nicely. A day in the life.

The difference in hemisphere threw me off a little, hot in January... Hmmm... Well, I guess it is a bit warm where I am in Florida, but my mind still has a hard time wrapping itself around the concept that Australia is hot right now! I love the flow of this, it really does paint such a crystal clear image. In the depths of winter, I always forget what oppressive heat feels like. And in the summer I always forget what miserable cold feels like. I can even identify completely with the sheet. No matter how hot it gets I always have to have something thrown over my sleeping (or tossing and turning) self. Bravo ! I look forward to seeing more from you!

Ah, yes. When I spoke with a dear friend in Oregon this morning she laughed with shock when she saw the strappy dress I was wearing... while she put on a down jacket to go out to the garage for 1 minute 😂

Thanks for your kind words. I often wonder how much my poetry is read and/or appreciated and if I should even bother. I'm taking your comment as yes, I should bother. 🙏

Absolutely you should. I'm working behind the scenes to get more curation to our group so we can all be rewarded more, but until then despite the small upvotes we do very much appreciate your contributions to the group.

Great to hear. I have no idea how it works to run a community or get the support you need to make all these things happen. I just know I'm grateful 🙏I don't have a lot I can contribute except to continue writing poetry at this point I guess! !LOLZ

Oh, and tokens! I can support with tokens 😉 !LUV

But my thinking mind
has kept me up
since well before sunrise.

Oh damn, that's me alright.

There's a damp sexiness about this, if that makes sense. The hot bodies half asleep, coming together in the kitchen. running in this weather? Are you totes bananas?

There's a damp sexiness about this

Love it. Yes, I guess there is. 😊

Meanwhile, I have no idea what you meant by this 👇

Are you totes bananas?

Totally bananas for each other/head over heels in love with each other?

If so, on our good days, for sure! On our challenging days, I still love him but occasionally want to throw something him 🤣

You missed the 'running in hot weather' bit - that makes you BOTH totally bananas 🤣

Well now, that is just delicious.

You pack in a lot of personal glimpses, but never let us stray from the core driving issue.

Nice work

Very nice poem, for a moment I imagined myself in that bed and wear little clothes for the heat and wrapped with that sheet, usually in my country Venezuela in the area where I am quite hot but in recent months is doing much cold, I love this great piece, hugs ♥
