Galata, Istanbul - the Bridge and the Tower

avatar
(Edited)

Since I shared some memories from a visit to the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul, I've been meaning to share a few more memories from that trip to Istanbul. I've written a few posts about Istanbul at different moments. But I still have some photos and more memories to share. Then I saw @dreemsteem's post announcing the next @dreemport collaboration will be with @pinmapple. So a good chance to share some more memories and also join the challenge.

So today, I'll share some memories about our visit to a couple of emblematic places of the city that if you ever go to Istanbul, you will surely visit, the Galata Bridge and the iconic Galata Tower.

The Bridge

The Galata Bridge, although architecturally nothing special, is a symbol of the city, as it crosses the Golden Horn, a narrow strait in the Bosphorus, which separates the historical peninsula from the modern side of the city on the European side.

The bridge runs from the port of Eminonu to the Karaköy neighborhood in the Beyoğlu district. During our visit, we crossed it several times, and I would not say daily, as we sometimes moved by boat, mainly to cross to the Asian side of Istanbul.

GalataBridge1.jpg

The bridge is full of fishermen during the day and part of the night as well. It is amazing how many people stand on the sides of the bridge with their fishing rods.

GalataBridge2.jpg

From the bridge, the iconic Galata Tower can be seen at the top of the hill.

GalataBridge_TheView1.jpg

And we zoom in on the camera for a closer look. Although later, we wander the streets of the surroundings of it.

GalataBridge3.jpg

The fishing rods are side by side.

And not only on the bridge but in various parts of the city on the banks of the Bosphorus, it is common to see people fishing. It is an image of the city that I like.

GalataBridge_TheView2.jpg

And before we continue on our way. And before finished crossing the bridge to Karaköy, we looked back to admire the view we left behind, with the New Mosque in Eminonu Square, and in the background, at the top of one of the seven hills of the city, the impressive Süleymaniye Mosque.

Tunel_Galata.jpg

Once we crossed the bridge, to climb the hill and reach the streets surrounding the tower, you can walk up the steep streets of the Galata neighborhood. Or you can use the funicular Tunel as we did that day. The funicular connects Karaköy with Beyoğlu, and the station is near the Tower.

The Tower

The Galata Tower is a medieval tower. It was built by the Genoese in 1348. And during the Ottoman Empire, due to its location on top of the hill, it was used as a watchtower.

GalataTower1.jpg

We could not climb the tower, as every time we passed by there was always a long line to go up. We had only a few days to visit the city, and we wanted to visit as much as we could. But that is a good excuse to want to return, although there are plenty of excuses to want to revisit Istanbul.

GalataTower9.jpg

GalataTower7.jpg

I'm not one of those who likes to make poses for a photo, but I guess a picture with the Galata Tower in the background was worth it, hehe.

The Tower by night

The Galata district is very lively during the night. It is full of cafes, small stores, and some boutique hotels.

GalataTower4.jpg

And the Tower is always illuminated.

GalataTower6.jpg

GalataTower5.jpg

The first time we passed by, there was a light show going on reflected in the tower, and if I remember well it was sponsored by Coca-Cola. I should have a video of it somewhere.

In the evenings we used to be around, so we had to cross the Galata bridge back to Eminonu. Our hotel was near there. So let me share some of the views we had from the bridge at night.

GalataBridge_TheView3.jpg

Galata with the Tower on top of the skyline.

GalataBridge_TheView4.jpg

View towards the Haliç bridge, where a line of the Istanbul subway passes.

GalataBridge_TheView5.jpg

And the view towards the Süleymaniye Mosque.

Thant's all for today, thank you for reading.

All images and writing are my own unless otherwise stated.

All photos were taken during our visit to Istanbul in December 2019. Some are with an iPhone 7, and some are with a Canon 60d.

Hey @coquicoin
It's nice to see these photos. We almost stopped over in Istanbul for a few days after our Egypt trip, but we decided against it last minute. I think Istanbul needs a holiday of its own. Our connection flight showed us just a glimpse of what we definitely want to go back and see.

I have only ever heard rave reviews about that country, so I'm happy to see that you had a great time:)))

Hi, Milly!

Istanbul is beautiful and so vibrant. I would love to visit it again and again and again, hehe. We only stayed for six days, it was our stopover for a family trip to Spain, but it was the best decision to stay there for a few days.

How was your trip to Egypt? I was there 20 years ago, and I liked it a lot.

Egypt was lovely and it's the kind of place that could grow on you. My husband definitely wants to go back. Cairo and Dahab have completely different vibes and are both lovely. We will return!
Istanbul is high on our agenda now.
I hope all is well with you:)))

I agree that Egypt is lovely. I saw the pictures in your last post of the pyramids of Giza. And the pictures are amazing. The place is so impressive and when you have them in front of your eyes it is hard to imagine how they could do something like that. I liked Cairo, when we went there years ago, we were also in Luxor, Aswan, and Ismailia. And I would love to go again.

Istanbul I'm sure you will love it and I hope you can go there soon. Everything is fine here. ♥️

ps: sorry for the late reply

At first, I thought that the tower was amazing during the broad daylight. Maybe the scene of the whole city can be seen up there, hopefully you can go up there and let us know what it looks like on top. Anyway, back to what I'm saying, the tower was great at night time. ✨ No wonder people are really lining up for this beautiful and historical tower.

The tower is beautiful.
And maybe someday I can go again and visit it, who knows? Life is full of twists and turns.
Thank you for stopping by :)

The tower at day time was already beautiful but at night? It was fantastic!

Remember Rapunzel, that could pass as the tower where she was kept!

I wonder if there is one fish that took the bait and then entangled all the fishing lines of those fisherman. that would be epic. hahaha

nice that you can go between Europe and Asia just by that bridge.

Hehe! LOLZ

That particular bridge connects two parts of the European side of the city. But there is a much longer one that does connect the European side with the Asian side to the north of the city.

Thanks for stopping by!

I find the mosque architecture in Istanbul so impressive. The place may look like an ordinary one, but every corner has something to offer... It must be a good experience to catch some fish by the bridge along with other folks too.

And I must check this latest collab of Dreemport and Pinmapple.. I would definitely love it. Thanks for sharing that info !LADY

The architecture of some places in Istanbul is impressive. I also really like the look of the mosques. And yes, it must be a fun experience to go fishing there, hehe.

I hope you were able to join the dreemport challenge, and if you didn't make it this week, you have two more to do.

A beautiful place, sis! It's very interesting how those people lining up along the bridge with their fishing rods. I would think they are doing it for leisure?

And the tower is wow... I love your photo with the tower in the background ♥️

Istanbul is a real paradise. I love the views. I wish it wasn't an overcrowded city. I would love to live there haha, but I would never do that in its current state. Especially at night the views become more impressive. It's been over 3 years since you took these photos. Wow!

I loved the city. And I would love to spend some time there and explore the city in deep, but I did notice that it is very congested.

But I hope one day I can visit it again:)

It's really congested. I hope they can manage to stabilize the population. Maybe then it won't be so bad. If they halve the population I think everybody would be much more comfortable. A lot of people are not happy living there but they are there because of the work opportunities.

It's a pity that you couldn't visit the tower, but I understand as I wouldn't wait in the line either. I would prefer to see other monuments than wait in the line 🙂 Actually, I did it a few times already and never regretted that I didn't wait. And indeed, it's a good reason to revisit the place 🙂

Great photos! Thank you for sharing!

Hello @coquicoin friend!!!... These are beautiful photos, a beautiful place indeed and to appreciate it in the same publication with both day and night photos, is a fantastic plus!.... I've always been particularly amazed by Istanbul, being a city where Asia and Europe converge in such an intricate way... Beautiful post, thank you very much for sharing. I enjoyed this...

Thank you, Sam:)
It was easy to move around the city. Istanbul is also impressive in this sense because you can move around by metro, tram, buses, boats, and walking of course depending on where you want to go. And the people are very friendly, they are tourist oriented, and they treat you very well and try to understand you, so yes with English you can get well.
