Memories of a quick trip to Florence a long time ago

avatar

Yesterday I was looking for an old file that my husband needed. And going through a hard drive that had a copy of one of my old laptops, I found some photos from a long time ago, when hubby and I were in Florence for a couple of days.

We were so young, in our early 30s. At that time, we were going to a film festival in Egypt, and the stopover of our trip was in Italy. We decided to stay a few days in Italy since hubby had never been. We didn't have many days, but we decided that in the time we had, we would visit Rome and go for a couple of days to Florence. For me the most beautiful Italian city I know.

Some memories of that trip were a little vague in my memory, but seeing some pictures started to come back.

We arrived in Florence by train from Rome as it was getting dark.

That afternoon, we strolled around the city. And, of course, we visited the neuralgic Piazza della Signoria, where the Palazzo Vecchio, home of the town hall, is located,

I was delighted to find this photo of a much younger me in front of the entrance to the Palazzo, very close to the replica of Michelangelo's David there.

We were also in the nearby Piazza del Duomo with the imposing Santa Maria del Fiore. But the pictures I have are not very sharp, so I keep them for myself.

Some memories from the Ponte Vecchio by night and by day. The first image is a photo of the night we arrived from one of the banks of the Arno River, of the buildings on the bridge. The second is a panoramic view of the bridge, with again a much younger me.

This medieval bridge is the oldest in Europe and is one of the icons of the city.

This is the view from the Ponte Vecchio towards the St. Trinity Bridge. Another ancient bridge of the city that crosses the Arno River, which from what I could read, is the oldest elliptical arch bridge in the world. Source.

A couple of photos of another place in Florence that I loved. The green oasis in the middle of the city. The Boboli Gardens.

Florencia_2002_6.jpg

Located behind the Pitti Palace and designed by the Medici. In these gardens, it is impossible to don't have the feeling that you are in an open-air museum. And thinking about it, the whole city is so full of art and history, that gives that feeling.

Florencia_2002_8.jpg

On our last day in the city, I remember we wanted a good panorama.

Florencia_2002_7.jpg

A photo showing the Porta San Niccolò, or what's left of it, the tower that was part of the defensive city walls, in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, where I sat enjoying the view.

And to be honest, to rest because something I remember very well from that trip, is that on that last day, thanks to my sweet tooth, I ate a chocolate sweet very late the night before. And my digestion had been cut off, and that morning I woke up with nausea and upset stomach. I don't usually get sick on trips, so I remember that day well. And we stayed there for quite a while.

Florencia_2002_11.jpg

A panoramic view of the city from the Piazzale Michelangelo viewpoint. Where you can distinguish the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and its imposing dome, and where you can also see the Basilica of Santa Croce.

Florencia_2002_10.jpg

And another panoramic view of the city from which, in addition to the Cathedral, you can see the Arnolfo Tower of Palazzo Vecchio.

Florencia_2002_12.jpg

Florencia_2002_14.JPG

The view from the small hotel where we stayed. With the roofs of the city among which we could see the Basilica di Santa Croce.

That day in the evening, we traveled by train to Milan where we would take a flight to Egypt to attend the film festival. And our quick getaway to Florence ended full of lovely memories.

Travel memories are a small treasure. I have always been one of those who value experiences more than buying a material good. Material goods come and go. The memories of what we live always stay with us.

One of these days, I will share the photos I found from the other stages of this trip, a small chest of memories.

And speaking of Florence and Italy, I felt like listening to this song. An all-time classic that my father loved.

Yes, the photo quality is good! I took them with the first digital camera I bought. It was a Nikon Coolpix. And I remember at that time I saved a lot of money to buy it.

A wonderful memory sis! Thanks for letting us travel back in time with you through your photos as you reminisce that trip. Having an upset stomach while traveling is not good as it spoils the mood but glad you found a place to rest while having a great view :)
