There has been some fight against climate change by some leading environmental groups. This fight is to help reduced the man-made effects of climate change on the environment. Environmental groups filed a lawsuit seeking to halt a controversial oil drilling project in Alaska approved by the US government, which has pledged strong action to fight climate change.

The six groups that filed the suit in US District Court on Tuesday accused the Interior Department and other agencies of violating the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and other laws by authorising the fossil fuel extraction.

This massive oil drilling project worth $8bn will mean a lot to the US government, but the environmental groups have complained on how the oil project will cause climatic issues that'll be felt for decades.

According to Mike Scott of the Sierra Club, (one of the complainants in the suit) “ConocoPhillips’ massive oil and gas project presents a real threat to the wildlife, ecosystems, and communities of Arctic Alaska.”

Looking at Mike's statement critically, one of the disadvantages of oil drilling is that one spillages will affect both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife as well as the inhabitants of these areas. It's very clear that gas emissions as well as black soots that affects the respiratory system of human will also affect the ecosystem.

If they’re allowed to break ground, the Willow project would be a disaster for the climate, the effects of which would be felt for decades.”

The Interior Department gave the green light on Monday to US energy giant ConocoPhillips to drill for oil at three sites in the federally owned National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska’s pristine western Arctic.

It should be noted that one of the campaign promises of Joe Biden during the 2020 race to the White House was not allow any form of oil and gas drilling in the US. This is the same person that have allowed Conocophillips to proceed with the oil drilling project in Alaska.

The Willow project will add 239 million metric tons of carbon emissions to the atmosphere over the next 30 years – equivalent to the annual emissions of 64 coal-fired power plants. Environmental organisations have called it a “carbon bomb”.

This on its own is dangerous to both humans, animal and the general environment and if this continues for the next 30 years, it'll be very diasterous to the environment and will increase the effect of climatic change on the people.

Alaska lawmakers lobbied strongly for approval of the drilling plan, defending it as a source of several thousand jobs and a contributor to US energy independence with production of 180,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak, or some 576 million barrels over 30 years.

According to local inhabitants of the area, the Biden's administration approval of the Conocophillip Willow project isn't good for the Arctic, water, animals and people respectively.
