Doing The Right Thing

I am no angel but when it comes to doing the right thing I think most of us would do what is morally right.

Yesterday I had a bizarre situation arise involving one of my old business suppliers who I haven't had contact with for a good few years. He mistakenly paid some money into a bank account of mine and phoned me once he realised his error.

This was not a small amount and was rather substantial being in excess of $5K so he was panicking slightly. He needn't have worried as firstly any funny amounts appearing in the account would trigger alarm bells and the money would have been returned even without the phone call. The problem was I hadn't used this particular account for a good 4 or 5 years and needed to find the account number first to log in.

I had to wait for the funds to clear and kept him in the loop until I had sent the funds back with all the proof from my end. I felt uncomfortable having someone else's money in my account even though I had no part of that process. I hope he learns from this as imagine if I was overdrawn or had creditors looking for outstanding payments as this deposit would have triggered payments leaving him short. I am sure this has happened in the past to others and is not something you can ever count out happening.

These days our heads are so full of passwords it is amazing we remember anything at all. How many phone numbers we knew off by heart in the old days before cell phones always amazed me. In many ways this is wasted brain activity as I tend to retain useless information over the important stuff. After a few minutes however I managed to log in as the required numbers magically appeared even after a good 4 years.

He was lucky as I have read other outcomes where the lucky recipient started spending a windfall that had magically appeared in their accounts. That lady received a jail term which is quite right as she knew exactly what she was doing and is pure common sense. She received roughly $1 million when she was only supposed to receive $100 so many zero's difference and she knew this was an error as why wouldn't you. Apparently it is a crime if you knowingly spend a mistaken deposit into your account. Just Google this and you will be shocked at how frequently this happens and how many go on spending sprees. Humans and greed being tested with so many failing makes you question their upbringing.

The difference in crypto however is who would you know who to contact if suddenly 50 Bitcoin appeared in your wallet? I would like to think I would try at least to find out where it came from as this may not be that easy. I think these are areas that will one day be resolved as crypto is meant to be translucent with everything on the blockchain except not knowing who the recipients really are.

I've never been in a position like that, but I would like to think I would do the right thing as well. Like you said, they are able to track it all much easier than you think. They are going to expect their money back at some point. Nice job doing the right thing in your case!

Only angels can do the right things, and then, at the behest of God, and we do only what we can do, and then we try to prove to ourselves that we did something right)

You have such a kind heart, a lot of people would have done otherwise in such position.

Sometimes it's not even about their upbringing but how hard it is to forgo that which is not yours. It's more mental I suppose.

I traded once on binance where the seller send me payment and mistakenly cancel the trade but to his surprise, I made sure he get his payment back when I saw the credit alert. He said he made such mistakes in the past with less amount but never got it back.

I believe crypto Is building a new world order which the currency is trust.

I like to think I would return 50 BTC if it showed up in my wallet by mistake and I honestly believe I would but damn it would be tempting!

Kudos on doing the right thing :)

I would return the 50 BTC if I got it. I don't think it's worth ruining my reputation over something like that or all the problems that can occur from it. I remember those stories about people getting charged for taking money they didn't deserve and it's not fun.

Could it have been different if you hadn't gotten the password?
