Doing Hive should be fun!

Recently I had an interesting engagement with Aspie96 on Twitter who lamented on Hive becoming a place where people come for the money and not for the social.

You can follow the conversation here, and I shall not repeat it.

The gist of it is that I think Hive is more than what he thinks, though I stop short of telling him more. I trust that he knows enough of Hive.

However, I got into more thinking and I tend to agree with what he meant, at least in part.

Comparing the posts on Hive and the other Web2 socials, it does seem that posts on Hive are packaged to earn rewards through votes. The culture of Hive is one that expects people to provide value of sorts through their posts rather than to just socialize for the sake of socializing.

At least this is what the majority of the Hivers who post are thinking, I believe.

Is this good for Hive? I don't know. But I do know a bit about theories of motivation that could drive Hive posting activities, and that could have some implications.

Simply put, people need to be intrinsically motivated to want to write something for it to be good. If it is extrinsically motivated, there will be a limit.

Some of us escape work to come to write on Hive because it does not feel like work, but when it is all about post rewards, we have walked into another work situation.

I am concerned that when more new users come on, and if they have the expectation that Hive is where they can earn, they will not stay long enough. Few would have the tenacity and talent and luck to receive high curation rewards. Those who find that is not the case, will leave.

What is my personal revelation on this?

I think Hive is more than writing posts for earning. Unfortunately, the notion of earning has entered my psyche. Naturally, I am curious how much I am getting.

I know for my own sanity, and longevity in Hive, I need to find other ways of looking at it.

This is what I decided.

Every of my post should be:

  • effortless and self-satisfying in its production
  • serving my own needs
  • valued independently of the reward it receives

Think back to how we used to be trigger-happy when we are posting on Facebook or Instagram without regard for financial rewards, I am trying to make my Hive experience like that.

I am pivoting towards having more fun on Hive!

I think that is the difference, Hive offers social and finance, we are getting finance in addition to socializing and it is only natural when money is involved for people to channel most of their effort toward earning more money.

I see otherwise, maybe this is because of my circle of followers, we get to make jokes, and chat about Splinterlands, the other day I was beaten by @rtonline and we made jokes about it and shared posts about it, that is socializing for me as well as making sure my content is also centered around money.

Thanks for responding. Occasionally I do get the friendly and amusing nudges too.

Imagine if a gang of existing friends from our social circle suddenly got on to Hive, that would have been way more fun. Before that happens, I will enjoy Hive for what it is. !PIZZA

The problem. HIVE faces is that people jump on because of the money, yet they have no clue as to actually having to build a proper follower base.. People who want to read your stuff..

They just want to jump in and get rich quick.. But we probably don't need the folks like them..

Either or, I madd a few comments on that twitter feed you shared laughs butbhe will most likely be smarter and wiser so I'll leave it be where it is now..

Good post I liked this

I think you hit it on the nail. Actually write something our followers wants to read, repeatedly. And that need not be a chore, in my opinion.

Different strokes for different folks, but there should be some folks that suits our liking. If we can all be ourselves and enjoy this sharing of thoughts while earning, it is already perfect. !PIZZA

Well the thing is if you handle it like a chore, thats what it'll become isn't it?

It was a lot harder for me to write stories when I did it only for the cash rewards... I then decided to use it as a place where I can safely store and revisit my stories and well that became a lot easier then....

I don't always get voted and. That's fine by my... I still have some great memories that I can revisit visually one day

There is definitely a financial aspect to everything here on Hive but I still think the tokenomics does work out well for projects that want to be on a blockchain. So there is more to Hive than just the rewards. You will still have to show up every single day to succeed like every other platform and even Facebook has some financial aspects to it now.

I don't agree with him because i am old user of Steem. I am working steemit since 2017. So the price of this steem was negligible. Since then I have been closely associated with the cement community. Rather this steemit community is like my family. If you like the content of someone's work, you boot it, then there is nothing wrong with me.

Good thoughts in your posts. I am at the crossroads myself. Since it is the new year, I think I will develop a new plan for Hive and related apps.
