On Building Your Investment and Small Efforts Being "Worthwhile!"

There are various reasons why people don't succeed in reaching their investment goals, particularly when they are "investing on a shoestring," such as I am.

One of these is the perception that "very small amounts" are just not worth the effort.

Too Impatient?

I expect part of the problem with that is that we live in a world where we are increasingly "trained" to believe in various forms of instant gratification, as a result of which we often lack patience along with the ability to dedicate ourselves to a plan and truly STICK to it.

I suppose we are also not being done any favors by being surrounded by messages from our surroundings that we always need to "think BIG."

The danger of that, of course, is that we start comparing our own modest plans to the grand schemes of marketers and grow persuaded that we are falling short.

This morning, I almost fell prey to "it's just not WORTH it!" thinking, as I was looking at my little Hive account, and my Hive-Engine token wallet.

"It's Just Not WORTH It!"

A little work with a calculator tells me that I only gain about 0.012 HP a day through Hive's native inflation. Definitely not worth it!

And curation/engagement earns me maybe 0.025-0.030 HP a day. Definitely not worth it!

My very small balance in HBD savings earns the equivalent of maybe 0.040 HBD a day. Surely, not worth it!

Working diligently, I have managed to build a small balance of DHEDGE (Hive-Engine) tokens that now pay me daily dividends of about 0.004 Hive. Definitely not worth it!

I have a very small stack of EDS (Hive-Engine) tokens that yield about 0.024 Hive a week. Definitely not worth it!

Also on Hive-Engine, my small stake of POB tokens adds about 0.55 POB to the mix from curation, every day. Probably not worth it!

Meanwhile, I talked about my ambitions to build a stake in the Hive-Engine BEE token, just because it seems like a solid way to support the Hive-Engine ecosystem. So now I typically get about 0.020 BEE a day from curation. Still, very likely not worth it!

If All We Were Concerned With...

... were large impressive numbers, the above (facetious, in case you hadn't figured that part out!) statements could easily be taken as genuine.

But it IS worth it! At least in my perception.

Consider how you can leave a bucket under a water faucet that just "drips a little" and return a few days later, and the bucket is overflowing, even though the slow dripping looks like it will never amount to anything.

Perhaps a more poignant example would be the way many people keep a bowl or jar on their nightstand or throw their loose change in it. "That'll never amount to anything!" we think, and we mostly do it because the coins are annoying and heavy in our pockets.

And yet? When we take the full jar — having new appreciation for "coins are HEAVY!" — to the bank to be counted, we suddenly end up with $300. Still "not worth it?" Probably time for a change of tune!

Sticking to a Plan — Even When It's "Not Worth It!

I believe a great many successes fail to happen not because someone had a BAD plan, but because they lost patience and gave up because what they were doing seemed like it was "not worth it."

Part of it may simply be in our approach and attitude towards the process, maybe along with having realistic expectations.

I look at my very small (but growing) stake and am quite realistic about the fact that this is not likely to buy a new house! But that's not what I am focused on!

Instead, I look at my small stake and consider that this is something I have, where there was NOTHING before!" And if I keep diligently doing it for five years, it might even end up being enough of a "something" that there's enough for a nice vacation.

Or maybe just a passive income stream of $10 a day I would not otherwise have had!

And that's DEFINITELY "worth it," at least in my very small opinion.

Now, I just need to boost my efforts with a few decently rewarded posts!

The way I reason small returns is compared to doing something else with that time and effort, the difference is even greater. So, if I earn $0.01, but otherwise may have spent $1, I have overall made a $1.01 difference in my position. Focusing on small returns I categorize as "spend avoidance".

That sounds like a really good way of looking at it! There is often an "opportunity cost" hidden in our actions.

A major part of Hive, for me, has been the networking aspect of it. I initially posted quite actively, made connections with other like-minded people, and now—while I definitely don't post as much as I originally had hoped—I've joined multiple Hive-related groups to contribute to the projects they're working on.

Directly, my Hive growth has tapered off, but indirectly I'm learning a lot, gaining value through other Hive tokens, and I feel like I've enjoyed more opportunities than if I simply focused on posting for $HIVE/$HBD/Hive Power growth. To me, that all feels "worth it", like you're getting at.

Good luck in your posting efforts!

I enjoy the networking aspects of the Hive experience, as well. I also really enjoy the "discovery process" of finding out how the many parts/communities we have here all interact, and how we can build synergy from that.

Dear @curatorcat.pal, we need your help!

The Hivebuzz proposal already got an important support from the community. However, it lost its funding few days ago and only needs a few more HP to get funded again.

May we ask you to support it so our team can continue its work this year?
You can do it on Peakd, ecency, Hive.blog or using HiveSigner.
https://peakd.com/me/proposals/199

Your support would be really helpful and you could make the difference! Thank you!
