Active Hive Accounts By Category In 2022

avatar

The Hive blockchains has around 2.4M.
There has been a big expansion in the number of accounts in the last year, 2021, while 2022 has some moderate numbers.

What percent of these accounts are active? How many active accounts the Hive blockchain has and how are they transacting/using on the blockchain?
How is the bear market influencing the number of active accounts?

Let’s take a look!

1.png

Top Four Hive Operations

We will be looking at the activity on the chain by the top operations made:

  • Post and comment
  • Votes/Curate
  • Transfer coins
  • Custom JSON transactions

Apart from the above, reading, or page views, is also a crucial part of this ecosystem, but this type of operation is not stored on the blockchain. There are some general traffic websites that can be used for this, like https://hypestat.com/.

We will be looking at the number of active accounts by the operations stated above for 2022.
We will be looking at the number of DAUs (daily active users), the number of MAUs (monthly active users), and then summary for the whole year.

Daily Number Of Active Accounts In 2022 [DAUs]

First let’s take a look at the number of accounts active per day. Here is the chart.

image001.png

The above is the chart for DAUs, for accounts making any type of operation.

As we can see at the beginning of the year there was around 400k DAUs, then there was a massive drop in June 2022 to around 200k DAUs.
Since June the number of DAUs has been quite constant around 200k.

What type of operations are these accounts making?
From previous analysis we know that most of the DAUs are coming from Splinterlands. If we take a look at a chart with active accounts per operation we got this:

image003.png

The top line are the accounts making custom JSON operations, that in most cases are Splinterlands operations. The number of these accounts is so much higher then the rest of the operations that we can barely see them on the bottom of the chart.
The number of daily accounts making custom json operations at the end of the year is around 200k per day. The drop in June 2022 is due to a change in the Splinterlands rules when a lot of bots stopped playing, especially in the low level leagues.

If we exclude the accounts making custom json operations for better visibility, we get this:

image005.png

From the above we can see that there is around 12k accounts voting/curation on daily basis, then there is around 3.5k accounts making posts or comments, and around 2k accounts transferring funds, at the end of the year.
We can notice a slight downtrend in the number of these operations, but no significant drop, compared to the prices.

Monthly Number Of Active Accounts In 2022 [DAUs]

The monthly numbers might give a better perspective for active accounts, as not all the users are making operations daily. Here is the chart.

image013.png

We can see a more gradual transition here.
There is a drop in the MAUs, but not the sharp drop in June like for the DAUs. The year started with almost 700k MAUs in January and the numbers continued to go down up until August when they hit around 400k and stayed around that number till the end of 2022.

When we breakdown the monthly active accounts by type of operation we get this:

image009.png

As for the DAUs, we can see that the custom JSON operations are dominating this chart as well. The year started with around 650k accounts making custom json operations and ended with around 350k.

If we zoom in for the other three categories that are almost not visible on the chart above, we get this:

image011.png

An overall downtrend here as well.
Votes comes on the top with 25k active accounts per month in January, and around 19k in December. There is around 15K accounts transferring coins in December, down from the 20k back in January.
On the posting side, the year started with 17k active accounts in January and close to 11k in December 2022.

Active Hive Accounts By Category In 2022

When we sum up the above and get the data on a yearly basis we get this:

image007.png

Number of active accounts in 2022 by operation:

  • Custom JSON - 761k
  • Transfers – 64k
  • Votes – 51k
  • Post and Comments – 47k

In total more than 800k accounts made some type of operation in 2022 on the Hive blockchain.

The custom json operations remain dominant on a yearly level as well.
Whats interesting is the number of accounts transferring coins is on the second spot here. On the daily chart these accounts were the least active, but when we sum it up for the year, there is more accounts transferring coins around then posting or curating.
Although we can say that compared to the custom json, the other three types of active accounts are quite close around the 50k mark.

Summary

There has been an overall drop in the number of active accounts on the chain in all type of categories. The highest drop has been in the number of accounts making custom json operations, aka Splinterlands players. This has been a result mostly of the change in the economy of the game and making low level bots inefficient.
From the other operations like posting, voting and transferring coins the drop in the numbers has been smaller.
Most of the active accounts on the Hive blockchain in 2022 has been Splinterlands players, with 200k DAUs, 400k MAUs and a total of 750K Splinterlands players on a yearly basis.
On the posting side there is now around 3.5k DAUs, 11k MAUs, and 47k accounts making a post or a comment in 2022. On the curation side, 12k DAUs, 20k MAUs and 51k active accounts per year.

The downtrend is obvious from the charts above, but compared to the price of the HIVE token, that started the year with 1.5$ and ended around 0.27$, the drop has been much smaller. We can say that there are core users that are swing trough the stormy weather around here 😊.

All the best

I think the crypto winter with a tons of FUDs have affected all the blockchains and Hive is not exceptional. But the DAU has started increasing from the December and the current positive movement will change the statistics slowly as we are preparing for the next bull season.

Digging the background on your charts, fancy stuff! 😁🧙‍♂️

I had to reread, and then read again when I got to "3.5k average users posting or commenting in a day" That seems so low 😱 Very motivating to post as regularly as possible! Thanks for the awesome info, I have a great feeling for this year!

🙋🏼‍♂️ One of the core users here, saying thank you for this good overview. The numbers will surely go up again once crypto markets recover.

I wonder if you could know how much is the weight of each game in Hive, not just splinterlands.

They are still tiny comparing to SL

As you can see from the graphs, there were more active accounts in December. This at least raises the possibility that January will see a rise.
I appreciate you providing the chart and analysis.

Im really curious as to why people left hive or were less active on it after the FTX conundrum.... Like yes the value of a hive fell but so did all the other cryptos... But what does a dropping price have to do with sharing stories or posting randoms, 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I dont get it at all...

Since the drop I've been way more active

People are leaving all crypto when the prices drops

yeah but Hive isn't like any other crypto... Do they leave FB when crypto drops? Do they leave Insta? I mean since I got Hive I've been on the norm social media platforms alot less, still active just less so.

But I do get your point it is still crypto related.

This year will be the year for Hive…
I can bet on that…
User base is all we need…
10k is to grow a community from the same country then adaption can come by it self on my opinion…
In a smaller country like ours of 6-7 million Bulgarians…
I know if I can reach those 10,000 members adaption in the entire country can come easily…

Namaste 🙏

It is great to have a good foundation of a user base sticking around even when are though times. If the crypto market will start a new bull cycle or at least an uptrend, we might see in 2023 these numbers going up and users becoming more active.

Yes, that is because the big whales on this platform are not trying to entice influencers to bring people here. It used to be that a ton of people on alt media would give formerly steemit and now hive plugs to bring their audience here because content creators were rewarded for posting here and getting an audience here. Now, no one ever talks about HIVE and no Buzz means a small number of bees. Until the people who decide what trends on here start upvoting people that draw people here from other platforms this place, though awesome will continue to lose numbers of users. There is very little content that is worthwhile being posted to this platform and very little that is unique to the platform. I can find photos on many platforms and I can find a ton of online games that have crypto associated with them. The future of this platform should be replacing YouTube and facebook by supporting content creators that can bring their audience away from those places and to hive.

Its easy to say, replace Facebook, Youtube, Twitter ... in reality that is a very hard thing to do, and even if someone succeed it takes years/decades .... how can Hive compete with youtubers, where the top creators literally get millions paid per month... on Hive the top authors are paid a few thousands ... Hive offers different type of web architecture for community buildings and maybe in time we will get there ...

Who are the top authors getting paid thousands? I do not recognize any of them being talked about on any other platform which means the top authors on HIVE are not doing what they are being paid to do. They should be driving traffic to this site by producing content people talk about.

For instance I post my videos to Youtube, Dlive, Bitchute, Odysee, 3Speak, and Rokfin. I get thousands of views per video and I post the show notes, all the source links for the show exclusive to HIVE which drives traffic here. I have brought many people to this platform and inspired many content creators who have made youtube channels and gotten literally millions of views combined.

How does the HIVE whales support my activity on here as one of the longest members, someone who has been here since it was steemit? They ignore my posts and upvote...

Photography content. Which is not unique to HIVE nor is it Unique in any way. The top ten posts trending on any day on HIVE are for photos. People are not going to leave mainstream platforms to go look at people's photography. That is boomer nonsense they can get on Facebook or any other platform. They come to places like Steemit when it was big, and to Hive hopefully to see political content they cannot get elsewhere. Look at Rumble, they are killing it. 3speak is a decent platform but it has no livestreaming.

If HIVE could build and support an app that replaces YouTube, having all the same features. HIVE could bring in millions upon millions of users. Or this platform can remain a fringe crypto platform mainly for playing a single game splinterlands, which is a great game and idea, but this platform could be so much more.

People who came only to make money from hive is not active at this time because its price has been lowered and they cannot make more money at this time. As soon as the market is up in the coming days, the users of each project will increase. Hive is strong and trusted platform. I am also sharing hive in my friends circle and we all should share it in our circle so that many people can come and work on it. Thanks for sharing the informative Knowledge about Hive.

As one of the daily active user I say thank you for this analysis.

The bear market of last year has a great role to play in the downward trend of users, but I can see we are still holding strong.

Apart from the above, reading, or page views, is also a crucial part of this ecosystem, but this type of operation is not stored on the blockchain.

This would be very useful information for the social side of Hive and I would love to see it added to the information recorded on the blockchain in the future.

Your data and analysis are always interesting and useful!
Great Job!
