What Is The Number Of Active Hive Accounts? | Data On Accounts by Posting, Curating, Transfers and Custom JSON Operations | March 2022

avatar

The Hive blockchains has around 2.4M accounts, growing rapidly in the last year with the growth of Splinterlands and adding almost 1M accounts in the last year.

But what percent of these accounts are active? How many active accounts the Hive blockchain has and how are they transacting on the blockchain?

Let’s take a look!

01.png

Top Four Hive Operations

We will be looking at the activity on the chain by the top operations made:

  • Post and comment
  • Vote/Curate
  • Transfer coins
  • Make Custom JSON transactions

Apart from the above, reading, or page views, is also a crucial part of this ecosystem, but this type of operation is not stored on the blockchain. There is some general traffic websites that can be used for this, like https://hypestat.com/.

We will be looking at the number of active accounts by the operations stated above from Jan 2021 – March 2022.
We will be looking at the number of DAUs (daily active users) and the number of MAUs (monthly active users).

Number of Accounts That Posted or Commented

First let’s take a look at the number of accounts that are posting on the blockchain, as one of the core operations.

image001.png

The above is the chart for DAUs, for accounts making posts or comments on the blockchain.

We can see a slow up trend through the whole period. At the beginning of 2021 there was around 3k accounts posting and commenting on a daily basis. Now this number is around 5k DAUs.
There has been a small drop in the summer of 2021 when the overall crypto market tanked.
On a monthly basis, in January 2021 there was around 9k active accounts, while in January 2022 18k accounts.

Overall, quite a steady number of accounts posting and commenting with a steady growth.

Number of Account that Vote/Curate

How about then number of accounts that vote. What is their number? After all the voting feature on the blockchain is at its core. Rewards are distributed via votes.
Here is the chart.

image005.png

In the period the number of accounts voting/curating has been between 10k to 14k per day, with a slow growth through out the period.

On a monthly level the numbers are from 17k to 23k MAUs.

Number of Accounts That Are Making Transfers

What about the basic crypto activity? Transferring value. How many users are making daily transactions? Here is the chart.

image003.png

The number of accounts making transfers started with around 1000 at the beginning of 2021, then it had a few spikes in May and June, and a steady growth after that toward 3k in December. In the last period the number of daily accounts transferring funds around is around 2.5k daily.

Number of Accounts That Are Making Custom JSON Operations

Now let’s take a look at the mains suspect. The custom json transactions!

image007.png

As expected, there is a huge spike in the number of accounts making custom json transactions per day.
The number has grown from around 10k per day at the beginning of the year to almost 500k accounts per day making custom json operation.

On a monthly basis there is around 650k MAUs.

Monthly Active Accounts By Type Of Operation

What about monthly active accounts? Not everyone is making daily activities. Monthly active accounts can be a more accurate representation. Here is the chart for MAUs by category.

image009.png

These numbers are compiled from the top 4 activities described above.

A total domination of the custom json operation that are coming from Splinterlands. While by the other metrics there is around 20k MAUs, the MAUs for jsons is a massive 700k!

The number for accounts posting, voting and transfers has seen some growth in the period, doubling or tripling, but the number of accounts making custom json operation has exploded for x70 times.

When we compare the number of active accounts per type of operation in the last month, we have this.

OperationFebruary MAUs
JSON611,307
Votes23,615
Transfers18,015
Post and Comments15,291

JSON operation are on the top, voting comes on the second place with 23k MAUs, followed by transactions and then posting.

Readers

Since the main dApp build on the Hive blockchain is a blogging platform the obvious question is how many readers it has. The numbers presented above are about authors, curators, gamers, etc… users that actually interact with the blockchain with some action.

The number of readers is not stored on the blockchain. The interesting thing is that there is more than one frontend to the blockchain, no there is no one single point of entrance to count.
According to https://hypestat.com/ the numbers for unique daily visitors at the moment are:

  • hive.blog 217k
  • Peakd.com 217k
  • Ecency.com 158k
  • LeoFinance 103k

These numbers have went slightly up in the last period as well meaning more readers heating the web apps powered by Hive.

All the best

Very interesting stuff. Good to see the growth rate is near 100% for most categories.

This is something that few look at. We need to have the continual growth rate. While we all want the mooning of people, steady will get us there eventually also.

18K per month is a decent starting point.

I really wish any of the hive interfaces got that many visits a day that would be amazing. Not sure all of us combined got as much as any one of those. We do get quite a bit but 217k a day is crazy... have you seen the numbers of visitors even the most read posts (usually splinterlands) gets? To be in the top 10 viewed posts for a day or even a week it's like 100 views. Put tens of thousands of posts combined over the course of a month and yeah it does add to be several times more than 217k but that's for a month.

The reality is: We don't have nearly as many people on the platform interested in Promoting their content for consumption as we do just getting a small set of voters interested.
It's something to work on for sure. I have plans... just need more developers for those plans. haha

That is according to hypestat ....

I have seen peakd numbers of views, but usualy for the new posts .... also the 200k number is for all the posts... for every random viewer on posts maybe from years ago... 100 views per post, but then I guess combine them with all the rest .... anyway there is like 5k accounts posting daily, 15k, monthly so the number of readers is for sure much bigger then 100 :) , cant tell for sure what the exact data is, probably there are more advanced and paid tools for this.

Is it possible for the api to log how many requests each post gets and make that number available to the ui's?

Too slow Jarvie.
MAKE PEAKD GREAT AGAIN!
Those numbers tell of a MAJOR LEAK.
See this here is a money game.
So let's say HIVE is a casino.
If those amount of tourists are viewing the Casino but then ONLY 10% actually spend in the casino then it's time for new management.

I actually do believe those numbers per day are accurate. Because by now there is literally 6 years of content to be found here from whatever legacy avenue a user found that content by...

So that's the MAJOR FLAW.
Hive fails miserably at selling itself.

WHY?

Many reasons, but one which you would acknowledge is that the UX fails to compel new users to STAY and keep consuming content (which would then encourage them to investigate the money game).

The essentials of how a user can then find more content has literally NEVER EXISTED since the beginning and still lacks severely. The tagging system here is way too simplistic and communities are more like isolation rooms where people disappear into. Visually.. Content doesn't JUMP OUT to a user or form a continued STREAM that users in just about any platform are accustomed to.. It goes on and on really. Content here exist in mass but the linkage of it is a major task left to the user. So then no wonder.. daily content gets found.. but then users find it extremely difficult to find more of it once here.

THAT'S A BIG FAIL.
But oh this is web point there they say... OK. (Superior apparently...)

So Jarvie...
Why do I make this comment?
Well.. Over A YEAR AGO (more actually) you posted about your vision to take peakd to that level...
But now... ? It's whatever.
Really Man.. It might be wise to step it up I say. That @ecency (although still slow and clunky) is making progress actually and looking like the primary point of:

USER RETENTION!
USER RETENTION!
USER RETENTION!

THIS IS A MONEY GAME AIN'T IT?
Ten percent is never going to take Hive price very far.

Hope the uptrend on activity keeps like this from now on. It is intrinsically linked with the price as well.

Could you go into a little more detail about the JSON transactions? Like what caused the huge upspike that you expected? Who contributed to that much growth and what projects were most beneficial to this growth?

  • hive.blog 217k
  • Peakd.com 217k
  • Ecency.com 158k
  • LeoFinance 103k

These numbers are not bad at all. Considering @leofinance front end is only focused on finance, even 103k looks good. SeekingAlpha has 4.3M. We still have a long way to go. I personally try to use few front ends every single day including https://next.d.buzz to show some support for the stats.

And now imagine 10 % of Splinterland gamers, heck, only 1 % would start blogging, commenting, curating - now, that would be some awesome growth!

Again, good data!
