Splinterlands - FOMO Hit so I Opened My First Chaos Pack and Lesson Learned

avatar

I have been watching too many Splinterland players show their pack opening by stream or blog. They were getting all sorts of nice cards to build their decks. Getting a GFL (Gold Foil Legendary) card with values in the $100's to $1000's.

Bitten by FOMO Bug

I am not one that gets FOMO so you could say this is a brand new feeling for me. After seeing all the great luck that everyone was having, why shouldn't I be as lucky. My luck is just as good as any one else's.

Cost vs Value Probability

So me being me, I did some calculations with the splintercards.com Pack Value Calculator. I looked up the price of a Chaos Legion pack on Hive Engine. It was $3.10. I input that amount into the calculator. Also, I included the cost of potions and market fee to sell the cards on the open market.

On average, purchasing a card pack should break even or a tiny loss of $0.07 USD. This is what really pushed my FOMO into high gear. Buy pack, break even or receive one of the GFL cards or any of the others in between. What is there to lose? I think the value would be greater than the cost so why not.

Purchased Pack at $3.09

After I made the decision to purchase, open and re-sell the pack contents, I immediately jumped on Hive Engine and bought a pack. 3.22201 Hive @ 0.959 USD per Hive = $3.09

Packing Opening

I was getting very excited again as I moved my pack into the Splinterlands game. I was saving all my packs to open after all the Airdrop cards were released. But the Value vs Cost is just to tempting not to open this pack.

I slowly clicked open one card at a time hoping for it to be legendary and/or gold since the opening would be using potions.

PeakMonster Shows Pack Value

I was not aware of this but asked @jonnycoin (AKA @jongolson ) on his Tuesday night Splinterlands stream how to look up an opened pack value. Thanks Jon.

https://peakmonsters.com/

In the Peakmonsters main menu click the Explore dropdown then click on "Market History". Do not click on Explorer as this will show all splinterlands players transactions not just your transactions.

Then click the "Explorer" button. Since the "Market History" set the system to your IGN (InGameName), the filter will stay set when moving to the explorer section.

This will bring up all of your activities within Splinterlands. The Explorer activities will include purchases, rentals, rewards and gifts. To see the details of your transaction, click on the "View details" on the transaction you would like to see the additional detail.

Actual Cost vs Actual Value

I basically received a regular pack contents - 4 common and 1 rare cards. I was not lucky enough to get a gold or legendary much less a GFL.

I paid $3.09 USD for the pack on Hive Engine. PeakMonsters shows the cards received in my pack have a list value of $1.03 USD and a Market value of $0.99 Oh, my I was not expecting that.

Lesson Learned

Let's put it this way, I was very disappointed with the results of my pack opening. 5 cards that are worth $1.03!!

I lost $2.06 USD by having FOMO. There were lots of Gold cards I could have had with the money that I threw away by purchasing and opening a pack.

Chaos cards under a dollar.PNG

Let me put it this way, it will probably be a very long time before I open another pack. Instead I will be purchasing individual cards that I want to add to my deck.

I will not be leaving the building of my splinterlands card deck to chance. The prices of cards will need to pump big time before I do anything with those packs.

still have 9 packs.PNG

Well opening Chaos Legion is probably safer than opening some of the sold out packs. At the same time, 1 pack isn't really going to net you much chance at getting some good cards. With the packs price near $3, I don't think many people opening up packs will make any money.

Yeah opening packs is a lottery sometimes. I think my pack of 5 cards was worth about USD 1.70 at the time of opening when I bought it with 4 USD worth of credits. Am just hoping I will get some luck with the airdrops, who knows? Lol!

The price of cards will probably rebound so picking up the packs around $3 might be a good investment for when all packs sell out. The pack prices will surely go up for resell.

Yeah I agree, though it seems like there's still some way to go since we just crossed the 7mil mark.

In the lower levels, it is very hard to win and move up but when you do get to Silver or above the rewards are a lot better. I think I will be buying some more packs if the price stays around $3. I think it will be a very good investment once the packs sell out but that will be a while before that happens. Take care.
