I just bought a PLOT of land on Splinterlands for $420. Here's why.

Hey there guys, welcome to another instalment of my forays into Splinterlands. In this week's episode, I basically just dropped $420 in WAX to obtain a Land Plot for the Splinterlands game.

Now, your eyebrows must be raised all the way to the roof thinking "FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY DOLLARS? THAT'S MADNESS". And in a sense, you're right. Prices are going through the roof, especially when you consider 1 piece was worth $20 at launch (before any bulk discounts). In spite of that, I personally do see the value of Land and here are a few reasons why it's worth it.

1. Item & Spell Cards are ONLY minted from LAND owners (never from packs).

Currently, in the game dynamic, players set out their decks before a countdown and the game progresses as is. However, the Land expansion aims to change that with new cards that are able to affect the game AFTER the deck has been placed. These cards can ONLY be crafted from Land owners and NEVER from packs.

One can already imagine the possibilities and advantages these cards are going to have and I have no doubt that these cards will be in great demand. This would create scarcity for these cards, bolstering the demand for these special cards AND boost up land prices.

2. Land is limited to only 150,000 plots.

In the new continent (named Praetoria), there will only ever be 150,000 plots of land. In the latest developer AMA, it was mentioned that there are currently no plans to ever increase the land count, further bolstering the idea that land will be scarce, somewhat like the Europeans discovering America I imagine.

Now, I'm not saying that there won't EVER be a new continent, but with so many plans for Land at the moment, it definitely seems that a new supply of land is the least of the developer team's priorities. To counter any additional new land plots, the developers have already confirmed that these initial plots of land will be granted 'Alpha' status, permanently buffing the resource rates for these 150,000 plots.

3. The ability to RENT out your land for passive income.

Now, with all these talks about exclusivity and scarcity, you might wonder, what about those players who didn't buy a plot of land? Well, fret not as the developers are implementing a renting system for the Land system as well. If you're tired of managing your buildings and resources as a landowner, feel free to rent it out to a prospective user. With such as limited supply, one can already imagine the amount of DEC/day an owner can earn.

As a thought experiment, assuming $420 is the cost to ROI, 1% would be $4.20 worth of DEC per day. Not too bad considering the land prices are only ever going up and it's a purely passive experiment.

4. SPS Airdrops

Holding Land also contributes 10,000 Airdrop points to the SPS Airdrop program. Who doesn't like free SPS by just holding a piece of land?

Conclusion

In short, Land is expensive but for those really interested in the game, there's definitely a strong case to be made to own Land especially with the developers carefully adjusting their economy every season. Now, with all that's been said, would YOU buy Land? Let me know your thoughts in the comment box below.

Thank you for reading this far.

Till next time.
Darren.
