The "Macellum of Puteoli" or commonly known as "The temple of Serapide" - Il "Macellum di Puteoli" o comunemente conosciuto come "Il tempio di Serapide"

The Macellum of Puteoli also known as the temple of Serapide is a market of Roman origin that is located near the port of today’s town of Pozzuoli.

The city of Pozzuoli was built on an active volcanic caldera, the supervolcano of the Phlegraean Fields, which moves huge amounts of gas, thermal waters, mud and lava in the subsoil of the city causing phases of rise and subsidence of the soil rather sudden that alternate for lengths of decades over time. This phenomenon is called bradyseism.

Because of this phenomenon the temple of Serapide has been submerged for most of the centuries and this is witnessed by the holes of molluscs found between three and six meters high monumental columns present in the archaeological site.

Over the centuries and due to the decline of medieval centuries for the Italian nation the Macellum of Puteoli was buried completely even if the largest columns were always visible and on the land above was cultivated grapes.

In 1750, following the excavations of Ercolano and Pomperi, the enlightened and magnificent King Charles III of Bourbon also arranged excavations in Pozzuoli and a magnificent statue of the Egyptian god Serapide was found, an important deity and therefore it was believed that the palace that emerged was the temple of Serapis which, among other things, is a name that resonates better than Macellum di Puteoli in Italian.

Personally I can testify that 15/20 years ago the area was completely flooded by the sea waters at the base and also with a decent height. Now there is only rainwater that has accumulated since the last downpour. So we are in the ascending phase of bradyseism.

In 1907, Dubois understood that it was not the temple of Serapis and identified it as a macellum. A square food market with 18 shops on the ground floor and probably the building was two floors, because of the stairs found.

In some areas have been found the remains of a pavement that did not belong to the temple that make assume that the temple was built over a pre-existing structure. Widespread practice in ancient times where the successive populations replaced the existing monuments with those of the dominant culture built with the technologies of the workers belonging. It would not be surprising if it were discovered that under these times there is another of more ancient origins.

Il Macellum di Puteoli conosciuto anche come tempio di Serapide è un mercato di origini romane che si trova vicino al porto della odierna città di Pozzuoli.

La città di Pozzuoli è stata edificata su una caldera vulcanica attiva, il supervulcano dei Campi Flegrei, che muove enormi quantità di gas, acque termali, fanghi e lava nel sottosuolo della città provocando fasi di innalzamento ed abbassamento del suolo piuttosto repentine che si alternano per lunghezze di decine di anni nel tempo. Questo fenomeno è detto bradisismo.

Per via di questo fenomeno il tempio di Serapide è stato sommerso per gran parte dei secoli e ciò viene testimoniato dai fori di molluschi rinvenuti tra i tre e i sei metri di altezza delle colonne monumentali presenti nel sito archeologico.

Col passare dei secoli e per via della decadenza dei secoli medievali per la nazione italiana il Macellum di Puteoli è stato sepolto completamente anche se le colonne più grandi erano sempre visibili e sui terreni sovrastanti veniva coltivata l'uva.

Nell'anno 1750, a seguito degli scavi di Ercolano e Pomperi, l'illuminato e magnifico re Carlo III di Borbone dispose degli scavi anche a Pozzuoli e venne rinvenuta una magnifica statua del dio egizio Serapide, una divinità importante e perciò si credette che il palazzo che ne affiorò fosse il tempio di Serapide che, tra l'altro, è un nome che risuona meglio di Macellum di Puteoli in italiano.

Personalmente vi posso testimoniare che 15/20 anni fa la zona era allagata completamente dalle acque marine alla base e anche con una discreta altezza. Ora vi è solo acqua piovana che si è accumulata in seguito all'ultimo acquazzone. Quindi siamo in fase ascendente di bradisismo.

Nel 1907, Dubois, comprese che non era il tempio di Serapide e lo identificò come un macellum. Un mercato alimentare a pianta quadrata con 18 botteghe al piano terra e probabilmente l'edificio era a due piani, per via delle scale rinvenute.

In delle zone sono stati rinvenuti dei resti di una pavimentazione che non apparteneva al tempio che fanno presupporre che il tempio è stato edificato sopra una struttura preesistente. Pratica molto diffusa nelle epoche antiche dove le popolazioni che si succedevano sostituivano i monumenti esistenti con quelli della cultura dominante costruende con le tecnologie delle maestranze di appartenenza. Non meraviglierebbe se si scoprisse che sotto questo tempi ce ne sia un altro di origini più antiche.
