The word discipline is perceived by different people to mean punishment, attempt to compel someone to do an impossible or difficult thing or even to forcefully make someone do what is against their wish.

On a positive note, someone may see discipline as a channel to improve their self. Our perception determines way we see discipline - we often know what is right but we may decide in our mind that we're being punished when in actual fact it is a call to order.

A person that sees discipline as a difficult and impossible task that will refrain, deter or prevent him or her from engaging freely in an activity that is a source of enjoyment or leisure has set his or her mindset to be that way. Discipline is meant to be accompanied by some sort of sacrifice, that is, paying a price.

Discipline is derived from the Latin word “Discipulus” which means to learn. It is the same root from which the word disciple is taken. Literally, discipline is a mode of life in accordance with certain rules and regulations. It is a sort of self-control reflected in public actions. This control is not forced upon the individual. It flows out from within. Hence, discipline is spontaneous and not a mere submission to authority in an obedient manner.

A student that wants to be the best in his or academics must be disciplined and some of the price that has to be paid is reduction of the number of hours spent watching television, reading when others are playing, researching and reading ahead of the class and so on. A man or woman that wants to be successful in their marriage must be disciplined not to have affairs with other people, must be able to control their anger, must be respectful among others.

Discipline have nothing to do with punishment because oftentimes it is not done with force or under duress. It is your choice to make whether you want to be disciplined or not. It is basically the ability to turn your backs to certain habits, especially the harmful ones. However, you may get punished either directly or indirectly if you refuse to be disciplined.

Discipline is also applicable to the financial aspect of our lives. An undisciplined person would not know what to spend money on and what not to spend on. There are lots of fancy things out there and it takes a lot of discipline to be able to have money sense. It has become an habit for some to purchase goods on credit because they do not know how to discipline themselves. A disciplined person would have spare money to fall back to whearas the undisciplined person who probably receives the same salary as the disciplined person would have exhausted all the money even before it comes.

The benefits of being disciplined is mostly enjoyed by the disciplined person - you're not doing it for anyone but yourself. The onus is on you to discipline yourself and not wait for someone else to discipline you.

Thank you for your time lovelies.
