To some people discipline mean punishment or an attempt to force someone to do something that is very difficult or to even force someone do what they do not want to do. On the other hand, discipline may have a positive meaning to some other people. They may see it as a means to improve on their personal life, career etc. by being more dedicated and focused.
Collins Dictionary defines Discipline as the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way which involves obeying particular rules or standards. Oxford Learner's Dictionary also explain discipline as a method of training your mind or body or of controlling your behaviour; an area of activity where this is necessary.
The concept of discipline is based on each person's perspective. We know the right thing to do but we often decide in our mind that we will take it is a punishment when someone get to call us to order. When people are being prevented or deterred from freely doing what will bring them pleasure at the expense of some productive activities, they will feel like they are going through some punishment, whereas it is for their good. Discipline have to do with paying a price, such as work over pleasure.

While I was growing up all I wanted to do is to eat and play. I may not deem it fit to read my books if I wasn't told to do so. Even when my parents tell me to read, I may be doing two things throughout the whole time, that is, playing or dozing off. I remember that I use to tiptoe to the door, slide the curtain to the side and peep at the TV from my room. (I have been caught several times, anyways). I was able to be serious with my studies when I went through some disciplinary routine from my father. He does not only tell me to go read, he will supervise me thoroughly to ensure I make the best use of my time.
In marriage or relationship, you must be disciplined by staying faithful to your partner, respect your partner and choose them over other people if you want to be successful. A student that want to be successful must pay the price of studying when others are having fun, making research and attending classes regularly. Likewise in business, you must practice discipline by not using the company's money carelessly or making bad decisions that may run the business down. Discipline is useful in every part of life, including finance.
A person who lacks discipline find it hard to take his or her eyes away from fancy things they come across in the mall, restaurants etc. It takes so much discipline to be able to spend responsibly. A person who is disciplined who receives the same salary at the end of the month with an undisciplined person will have some money to spend throughout the month and also save/invest while the reverse will be the case for the latter.
