There is no freedom without responsibility.
It might be a truism. It might be a little cheesy. But it's all about practical implementation of this slogan. For me, last weeks of the discussion about DVs and censoring on Hive come down to this issue.
Decentralization doesn't need to be chaotic, I'm going to repeat this. And with new possibilities and new ways to utilize and express our natural freedom, we need a new sort of structure to create efficient, truthful and friendly environment, without compromising the liberty.
Hive power is the biggest power here! It's not only power to produce and distribute money, it's much more than that, it's power to create and shape future world. Our votes, by financial incentive are going to influence trends and topics, but this is not all. With our votes we legitimise and support certain attitudes. Here comes responsibility. Do you really want to support authors who power-down all the rewards? Or these people selfvoting every post? This is like feeding the dog biting you, and in the long run, it might decide if we will prosper or perish.
Obviously we cannot create new institutions and control agents, this is the way of the past. But what we can provide is simply information. Every Hive frontend provide simple information about users known from the Web 2.0 Reputation is one novum, but this term is completely irrelevant to actual measurment. It's not enough.
What really should matter for the decentralized community on the blockchain are these metrics:
-what is the ratio between earned money and powered-down money of this user
-what percentage of votes of this user were self-votes
-how much of possible voting mana has been used by this user to support the network
This is relevant information for user engagement and reputation, and I'd love to see these by default implemented on major frontends. This is matter of transparency and easy access to these info, everything is visible on the blockchain, but ease of use is crucial for our future in my opinion. What are your opinions? @peakd @ecency
This doesn't end DV wars, however it would be major improvment to vote distribution. The idea discussed here by @theycallmedan to add special free votes to counter subjective DVs after voting period seems to be improving this problem IMO, but we still need to improve the system in terms of exploitation.
At the end it comes down to the stakeholders keeping their best interest in their mind, the rest is education and providing the information. Can you see any important metrics which could help you decide, who deserves your vote? I'm counting on your engagement here.

so true one of the biggest things people are battling with right now is asking for their government for money and help instead of bucking up and realizing they made mistakes and owning up to them

And they also bite themselves (and the whole platform), when they power down at the slightest upward movement in the Hive price. Just enough to see the power down/power up difference in the recent past. It is a huge minus, which means that there are much more power downs than power ups.
I powered down to shot sell into my bot which makes me more money than cutting on Hive with psychic leeches downvoting all the content I appreciate.
Very interesting suggestions. You write about things important to me. Sometimes I check the history of the user's behavior, some of them I just remember because they regularly do things that I do not accept. And sometimes I just don't have enough time for it and then I don't give upvote or downvote.
Such indicators would be helpful. There are, however, issues such as tipu for tipu and vote for vote. Another - producing original content, but very low effort, like a completely ordinary photo without any keywords, a video of some activity in one game or another (nothing special, no one watches it later), two sentences plus some "sensational" photo or video found on Reddit.
And finally publishing posts on several blockchains. It's a simple poolrape and spreading too thin.
Some users do not understand, or pretend not to understand, that such behavior reduces the value of Hive. If you rely on their words, you will read that they are perfect users, produce great content, pursue their passions, are great tip curators and the downvotes on their content are completely wrong.
Freedom is a concept. The freedom that we crave for do not exist. There has to be a set of rules/laws/codes/regulations that everyone follows, so that we know what is allowed and what is not. Only then can we be 'free' within this moral code of conduct. 😊
Disagree. We can shape what is seen as a positive and what is seen as a negative by our voting strategy. And voting stratedy differs among users. This is a decentralized way of creating law which acknowledges our differences in ethics.
The most important factor for me, and the only factor pretty much, is to be independent.
Someone who has their own style and info, not copy pasta, would typically get my 100% vote. Its rare I use less power unless it's on a comment I appreciate.
We could charge a transaction fee for every single interaction with the blockchain that scales up depending how long it was since your last action. I learnt that from Blurt blog, they prevent spam with a burnt transaction fee, they have no downvote utility and say it worked well to prevent spam.
These considerations of yours on the importance of Hive Power are very important. I hadn't thought about certain aspects.

I don’t know how the technical and community concerns related to standards and moderation on this community should work, but I love the fact that I can honestly tell people at the coffee shop that the new decentralized Web is nothing like 4Chan and the other old “Wild West” sites. It really feels like the best of both the old Web and the social Web 2.0.
We have a beautiful thing going on here, if we can keep it.
Also, consider the ramifications on having reputation stats based on power usage for casual or occasional users.
Got some solid point here that are definitely worth contemplating, though I’m not smart enough to do such a feat.
