Better Living: Unclutter Your Space, Unclutter Your Life, Unclutter Your Mind!

Lately, I have been starting down the road of uncluttering my world. Interestingly enough, I find that I am following in the footsteps of my parents, who started putting their affairs in order some 25 years before they actually passed away. Whatever else they might have had going on in their worlds, they were the exact opposite of most older people who seem to approach some form of "Hoarding Light" as they age.

Our lives have felt somewhat cluttered for a while, being the combination of two households that included relatives that had died and passed us stuff, and subsequently two sets of parents passing away and more stuff coming our way.

I'm certainly glad we have eBay as one way to get stuff reassigned to new locations... that has already helped thin stuff a good bit.

Still, there are "pockets" of stuff still in need of being dealt with... one set in the strange closet/crawlspace under our stairs — we fondly refer to this spot as "The Harry Potter Closet" — and a different set that has been living at the back of the large closet space in what is now my home office... but was the previous owner's tool and parts cabinet when he was working on cars in the space we have now finished out to living and work space.

Aside from copious business records and tax records from the past 7-8 years, that closet contains moving boxes of "stuff" that gradually migrated from storage spaces to our spaces... some of which has not seen the light of day in several years.

I suppose it's testament to the fact that some progress has already been made, that we no longer are paying monthly rent for storare spaces!

I sometimes sit and ponder just why I haven't just gotten rid of everything, and the truth (or, at least, my rationalization) is that a lot of it has monetary value. Stated a little differently, simply hauling it to the second hand shop as a donation would represent an "opportunity cost" in the $$$ thousands.

Meanwhile, a lot of the documents are banking, tax and business related, and need to be either shredded or burned.

The only problem is that it's work and time consuming to actually realize that cash. Is it really worthwhile to do the work to get $20 here and $13 there? Perhaps not to someone with a stable $5,000 a month income... but when you're not sure where the money for your next electric bill is going to come from, then it is.

But that doesn't make it any less daunting! However, one of my intentions for 2021 was to get that closet sorted and "processed." So... onwards!

I once heard it said that clutter is "as much a state of MIND as a physical reality."

By that, it suggests that when we get rid of the clutter in the space around us, our mind also declutters because there are fewer annoying little things we try to keep track of. And I would have to say there's a lot of truth to that: It will be a great relief not to have to think about
that stuff, anymore!

I suppose it would be more fun/inspiring to tackle this project if I could put all the proceeds into crypto investments... rather than just pay bills... but hey, thems is the breaks! The bills have to be paid...

Thanks for reading, and I hope the week is off to a good start for you! How about that Bitcoin???

I LOVE de-cluttering and clearing out. Not only does it do wonders for the physical space in terms of appearance, but it just feels so darn good afterward, like a new lease on life for yourself and the space you cleared - even if it is just a chest of drawers. I actually also need to do this because after my mom passing I have now got all her stuff in my place too.

to get that closet sorted and "processed."

This is a nice way of putting it. I have moved a few times in the last few years and I can say that I still have boxes from ten years ago we just opened this year. Decluttering really does wonders for the state of mind especially in my case when I moved on from hoarding books that I also had electronic copies of. :)

How about that Bitcoin???

Bitcoin is a beast! :)

As you've probably guessed, I'm a minimalist both by nature and my life to date - If I de-clutter anymore, I'll be naked!

I'm sure it does help to keep mind clear though...

I did a lot of decluttering and selling in 2020 when i was on long service leave, almost obsessively because I was going away and housesitters were coming. I also always think.. what if we went travelling TOMORROW.. do we really need all this STUFF? And yes, the extra money was great. When i didnt need the money i filled a jar with the earnings plus the money from selling eggs. In the end i had around 3k we spent on other things so it all added up.

Besides, as my Dad says, you can't take it with you when you die..

Oh my I JUST posted my method for this. To answer one of your questions, selling stuff is not only profitable (I'm close to $3000 now), but fun!!! I spent all the money supporting my favorite businesses (food, baby, food) during this very difficult time.
