Pico a pico. Y tendrá que enseñarme a hablar.

"¡Pi, pi, pi, pi, pi...!"

"¡Pi, pi...!

ENGLISH

Since he came home, our portion of corn has been cut back and we have been banished to a secluded corner of the yard.

Now we can only listen to his constant clucking and the flapping of those lazy wings as all the humans compete for his attention. My colleagues say it's the most natural thing in the world, humans like to surround themselves with talking creatures.

That's why they prefer him over us, and devote all their time to him. That crazy, vulgar bird. Just because he can utter a few words? We are prettier, we can sing and we move with more agility. We don't cause any trouble (as long as you don't leave the cage door open for us). We just ask for corn and sometime in the sun, nothing more.

But it seems that it is not enough to be an industrious bird in the performance of your duties. You have to stand out, you have to make a fuss. Well, that's what I'm going to do, even though my colleagues have warned me of the danger I'm in.

Why not try to compete with that marginal parrot, how come he always says? "Bun for the parrot." Well, that doesn't sound hard to pronounce:

"Peep, peep, peep" No, that's not how he says, let me try one more time:

"Peep, peep, peep.."

It is very difficult! There has to be a special technique, a way to place the beak. Only that parrot can teach me. But how do I get to him? I know! I'm going to make a fuss so that when the lady comes to open the cage I can escape. Then I can get in front of that parrot. Beak to beak. And he'll have to teach me how to talk.

"Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep...!"

He's coming to check, it was easier than I thought. My classmates tell me to shut up, that I'm going to end up badly, but I'm determined. Later, when I become the favorite you'll see what happens, I'm not willing to share my corn with anyone!

"Peep, peep, peep...!

I'm out, he almost caught me with that big hand. Now he's shooing me away with the broom but I'm very fast, I'm a fearless canary. I'm going to fly to the living room, quick! Where is that lazy, sneaky bird? There you are! You're going to teach me how to talk, you're going to teach me how to please humans, you're going to teach me how to be like you.

"Peep, peep, peep, peep!"

I beg your pardon? That's not human language. Why do you repeat everything I say to you?

"Peep, peep, peep, peep!"

Don't do it anymore! Are you making fun of me?

Stop repeating everything I say!

The simplicity and cheekiness of the conflict in this piece is great. Cute and humourous in the space of less than 500 words. I also popped the English version into the Hemmingway app, and it scored impressively well. This could be a legit piece for a children's book (which are among the hardest things to write). Very well done!

Thanks a lot! I always try to put extra effort into the translation, although it's hard to tell the stories in another language. Recently, I found myself writing stories for and about children, maybe my subconscious begging for kids of my own. It's the hardest one to tell, I agreed with you. Thanks for the reading.

I always try to put extra effort into the translation,

It's appreciated for sure! A lot of extra effort that us English-only folks can never truly wrap our heads around.

Exactly it is obvious that humans like those birds which talk with them and they love to have such sweet and talking birds.

Indeed. Humans like to surround themselves with talking things. This little beard tries to become someone else and fails. There are a lot of people like that. Thanks for reading

Our canary friend thought he knew the lesson the parrot would teach... unfortunately the parrot had a more important lesson for him! This was a joy to read! I look forward to seeing more like this!
