*(Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen the first episode)*

The first episode of House of the Dragons is full of clichés. Could it aspire to be better than Game of Thrones?

Cliché: A theme or form of expression conventionally used as a rhetorical device by orators and poets, and repeated throughout the history of literature.
Oxford Dictionary

I think we are only interested in it being superior to the last season of Game of Thrones (GOT). As so often happens, we, unfortunately, remember the endings of our favorite series more and forget a bit about the quality that kept us glued to the seat in the first place.

GOT is the best-achieved series in history so far, not only for its revenues but for its technical/artistic display. The House of the Dragon can compete with it in terms of scenographic elements but, after watching the first episode, I don't think it reaches the depth of plot of its predecessor.

The World of Ice and Fire, in my opinion, is a complex universe, far from many of the clichés that have characterized fantasy over the years. Here there are no flat characters, everyone has very personal interests and morals are not subject to strict criteria. Just as in real life.

Let's take a closer look at the main characters of this first chapter, and let's go side by side with some of the characters of GOT.

King Viserys is presented in a way that is all too familiar in the stories of the genre; a quiet, conciliatory king, with character traits that make him a perfect target for all kinds of intrigues that try to supplant his power. A vulnerable king is always going to be prey to skilled advisors who try to manipulate him. Kings like this I have seen many.

King Robert Baratheon was also a manipulable king (three false sons noted in his account corroborate this claim). The typical monarch was indifferent to affairs of the state, more interested in hunting, women, and squandering the royal fortune. However, he was driven by longing and guilt for not having been able to enjoy all those riches with his true love (Lyanna Stark). Robert's self-destructive behavior is consistent with that of people who have a lot of material things, but little love. When he proposes to Ned Stark the position of Hand of the King he is ensuring that he has not only an ally but also a friend. All these characteristics add humanism to the character and move him away from the cliché of the irresponsible king who is going to die soon.

Rhaenyra falls too much into the scheme of the little princess with an enigmatic look, unquestionable beauty, and an indomitable strength hidden under her calm character. The story is prepared for her character to face enormous difficulties and emerge victorious. Since the beginning of the chapter, everything around her seemed to shout: she's going to be the queen, she's going to be the queen! It's ok to empower the female figure but it would be better to do that by moving away from such well-known clichés.

I remember Arya from Game of Thrones, an insolent little girl, far from the prototype of the charming damsel who hides under her eyes a power never seen before. With Arya, it was all childish until the same tragedies of life made her grow up before our eyes. This is the kind of character that changes everything and ties us to the chair.

Prince Daemon (special kudos to Matt Smith's performance👏🏾👏🏾) is the real rogue prince. He's also enigmatic (which seems to be a Targaryen quality in this series), very manly, insolent, and impatient. I can think of several princes who would fit this stereotype. I assimilated this character much better and we can appreciate his better nuances, but it is clear that his approach is quite simple: the rogue prince wants the crown.

Let's remember another character who also sat on the Iron Throne without authorization: Jaime Lannister. In the first season of Game of Thrones, he was presented to us as a real son of a b... (remember what he did to Bran). Jaime's aspirations were not those of ruling or being the supreme chief, they were much more earthly and dark, which enriched the development of this character, making him impossible to forget.

Already from the first chapter, we can imagine the dynamics that could exist between the main characters and the possible typical situations in which they could get involved, but where are the subtleties? The gray and difficult-to-define characters? We have, for example, the duet of Corlys Velaryon and his wife, "The Queen Who Never Was," but in this chapter, they merely whisper and cast inquisitive glances.

A little more than that does The Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower. This character brings me closer to the interesting intrigues that were going on in the corridors of the Red Keep in GOT. Ser Otto has hidden cards up his sleeve and presented us with a preview of how far he is willing to go in the scene with his daughter, Alycent, after the death of Queen Amma. Still, his character is more outlined towards the cunning advisor who we all know wants to conspire to seize absolute power.

He reminds me of a Littlefinger but without his delicious sarcasm and charisma. Littlefinger from the beginning of GOT became an absolute enigma. He had no sons, no great name, no men at his disposal. What did Littlefinger want? What were his motivations? These were questions I asked myself from the beginning. ambition? All the characters in that universe had it. No, there was something more human and underlying motivating their actions. Ignoring these motivations, prioritizing only his desire for power, was what ended up diminishing this great character to an empty shell in the final season. People don't just fight for power, money, and fame. There is always something more.

The series is just beginning and we must give it time to develop and grow, as it should be. If we look for the source material, The Dance of Dragons, in the Book Fire and Blood, we will see that there is a lot of material to cut and the plot has room for these characters to evolve and make us fall in love with them.

I think we will enjoy an amazing show, gripping, and one of the best made by HBO. But, in terms of dramatic depth and character development, I don't think it will match its predecessor: Game of Thrones.

I didn't write this article to spout my pessimism. I'm just using my experience as a viewer to analyze the trends that could be imposed on this series (I sincerely hope George RR Martin and Ryan Condal make me swallow my words). There is still much, much, to be seen.

In the meantime, let's enjoy this new journey to Westeros.

Dracarys! 🙈

Game of Thrones took us to a party of unique emotions. It was the blow to what Quenya we were used to seeing after Tolkien's fantasy. There are many similarities in some characters from La Casa dek Dragon and Game of Thrones, although on closer inspection, each of them share unique traits.

What ruined Game of Thrones was that gap between the books and the series. George R. R. Martín created something that later ended up consuming him too. The creators of GOT did what they could, and in the end it wasn't all pretty, perhaps because of the quick twists and awkward conflicts.

The house of the dragon on the other hand, is a story that already has a well-developed context, at least there is already a horizon of arrival. I think that we will have a better taste in our mouths here than what GOT left us. We'll have to wait... the dragons here change everything, hahaha.

Excellent analysis! Let's hope everything goes well. Dracarys! 🙈

Welcome to Movies and TV Shows

Have you read the book Blood and Fire? ali tells the story of the entire House Targaryen. It's ok, not on the level of the Song of Ice and Fire saga, but this new series is based on that book. The series keeps the essence of the Game of Thrones universe, but I quite liked that it focuses on the civil war that divided the Targaryens. Rhaenyra has a lot of similarity with Daenerys, she will have to face many obstacles, there will be a change of actress, because the years pass and she will no longer be the young woman we saw in the first episode. Emma D'Arcy is the other actress who will play her, with more mature features. So far it has been a success, I have liked what I have seen. I think the high ratings made the HBO executives give the go-ahead for the other series they had said some time ago, surely they were waiting for the audience reactions with this series. They are going to make a sequel series with Jon Snow.

Yes, I have read the book (more than once lol) I'm delighted by the complexity of the plot in the book, as well as the whole Martin's saga. I'm just not seeing as deep in the first chapter of HOD. We wait and see.

I will be more active here. This is the first post that I can relate to this community. Now that I break the ice, I'll be interacting more, for sure.
Thanks

Hello, I recently finished game of thrones, with the illusion of starting this series and I really liked it a lot. Some characters have similarities like the princess and Arya (is the most remarkable resemblance). The princess wanting to be a warrior. I imagine that the development will take us on a wonderful path that we will enjoy a lot.

We certainly enjoy the ride. Westeros is a wonderful place to be and its characters teach us things about the world we live. I know HBO it's preparing more content about that.

I don't know over time which one will feature the best characters, but one thing is for sure, a series based on the Targaryens of the past is sure to have a lot of strong, crazy and interesting characters!
Thanks for sharing

The tone is set for a wonderful show. They already have the bad experience of screwing up the season finale. If they learn from their mistakes, it would be awesome.
