Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Saturday Savers Club with Susie Saver. So much news this week including a new LBI challenge! Read on ...

CUBLIFE AIRDROP & PRE-SALE

Did you get your Cublife (CL) airdrop? It went to all accounts holding a minimum of 10 LBI - about 200 in all.

CL are available to purchase through Hive-Engine - send either LEO or Hive(pegged) to @cublife to receive the first CL issue on 21 May 2021. The first dividends will be released to CL holders on 28 May 2021 at 21:00 UTC. Yay!

Why this is a good savings opportunity

  1. Each month, you can set aside Hive you have earned to buy CL tokens (or send it to @cublife every week) and receive the next round of CL tokens issued on 21st of the month.
  2. Each week, you can choose to re-invest your dividends and buy more CL tokens, increasing your stake and your dividends.
  3. There are a million CL tokens, so plenty of time to get into your CL savings groove, without feeling FOMO and that you have to rush.

BITCOIN DIPS BELOW $50,000

Was it Elon Musk or something else that caused the price to dip below $50,000? Either way, did you pick up a little Bitcoin this week? I was busy in the first dip and then this morning I went to buy some and found my online banking was down. Is the Universe sending me a message? 🤑

More about EDS tokens

EDS tokens are a low-risk income token, ideal for people who want to save. There were only 20,000 originally and they were all sold at 1 Hive each, with guaranteed earnings of 12% each year. You can now acquire EDS tokens through the EDS Miner token.

Earnings come from powering up and leasing out the Hive that came from selling the tokens, plus earnings from posts and comments each week. EDS pays out every Monday evening. Last week the pay out was equivalent to 22%.

Back to business ...

We're going to be here every Saturday through the year growing a little savings honey pot, if you have plans for saving or getting to a different place this time next year - maybe $5 Hive by the end of the year 🤑?

Whatever it is, stick with Susie Saver through the year and we'll get there. Along the way, we'll share lots of tips and tricks for saving and how to get the knack of making your money work for you and not the other way round.

Let's Get Started

We're using the 365 Penny A Day Challenge framework for the Saturday Savers Club. We're aiming to save £667 worth of pennies by the end of the year.

Right click on the image, save it to your computer and then print it out.

Okay, let's check in ...

1. Check Progress

Each week, we're going to check in through this post and see where we are up to. Our target for today, 15th May, was 9.24p. Next week, we'll be saving 9.73p and by Saturday we'll have savings of 101.07p (amazing - over £100 GBP in 20 weeks)!

Each week, I'll be buying Hive for @susie-saver's account with the pennies we've saved.

Here's this week's results - 9.24p buys 19.41 Hive.
Nearly 235 Hive saved in 20 weeks! Plus we're earning 3.22% inflation on powered up Hive, 22% on EDS tokens and a little on posting and curating!

@susie-saver has powered this week's savings; she's also been voting following a curation trail and started posting using @actifit app, bringing her account to 137.559HP. She's aiming for 500HP and is a quarter of the way there. What's your goal?

How much did you save this week? Did you meet your target? Or did you save even more?

Being accountable to another person or a group is a great way to motivate yourself to save (or anything you want to achieve). Of course, you need the right kind of people around you - ones that think what you're trying to do is worth doing ... or at least fun 😁.

Sign up here with us to start your savings journey:

  • just leave a comment below if you want to join the challenge.
  • follow @eddie-earner so you never miss a post (Eddie has lots of ideas about how to make money - he's the earner, I'm the saver - you'll like his posts).

2. The Golden Pig Tip

saturday savers club.jpg

Every week, we're going to share a Golden Pig Tip for saving. By the time you've tried them all you'll have £670 saved.

This Week's Golden Pig Tip

Here's this week's Golden Pig Tip:

Check what you are paying for household bills and shop around to see if you could get a better deal. This canny saver found £188 ($250) extra savings a month by organising a new deal - in some cases with the same supplier!

And today is always a good day to start saving - you can start on Day 1 or make up the first twenty weeks to catch up with @susie-saver. Or join our 100 day savings backwards challenge 😁.

That's it for this week. Hope you've enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you next Saturday with progress so far and our next Golden Pig tip.

Drink cheaper coffee or quit in entirely :P Avoid buying sugary drinks, buy goods in bulk and batch make it e.g chickpeas.
Split your soap into to dispersors and add water :D

Drink cheaper coffee or quit in entirely :P

Hmm, this could be a hard one, especially if you love your coffee and you're a connossoir! However, even buying the best you can make savings - @whiterosecoffee provides very good coffee at some of the best prices in England. Great service, too.

Avoid buying sugary drinks

From a health point of view, this has an extra benefit. Coca Cola always says that their biggest competitor is water 😂. I like our local tap water, it makes the best tasting tea. But for drinking as water, I boil it first and keep in a jug or a flask.

Good for you with the airdrop 😍

I am sure @whiterosecoffee is worth it, its still more expensive than what I can get here + the shipping fee :D - I do also like coffee, but I would really love to enjoy it when I want to and not needing it to wake up :D I am currently drink less and less coffee and I plan on stopping 100% in the next few months.

Sugary drinks are just expensive compared to water xD
Why do you boil the water first? :D

There's a lot of chalk in the water here - kettles and washing machines get furred up very quickly - I like the taste it gives to tea but not to plain drinking water 😁

Start a garden in your back yard, or on your deck, or patio, or a balcony. You can save a bundle and you get the best and freshest veggies you can get.

I have switched savings now to get as much CL as I can in the next week, so we shall see how that goes.

Have a great week all

It depends on your garden space, is it is small space tomatoes do well in pots or in the garden, if you have the room onions, squash of all types. It also depends on the growing season where you live.

I love a home-grown tomato, especially eaten straight from the plant 😍. THey do well in pots, too, and I notice that there are new types being bred for small spaces.

Yes they have but even the old ones do well in 3 to 5 gallon pot. We are living in a apartment right now so we do balcony garden and most crops do well in pots. We grow lettuce, tomatoes peppers, cauliflower, and herbs

Here's one of my saving tip, or rather making money tip. I have a considerable collection of African violets, all colors. These flowers are growing and growing and at some point they need repotting. This is fine but my (and everyone else's) space is limited, so what do you do with the new flowers? I took them to my hairdresser, who has a ledge in front of the window and plenty of good space for the flowers. She was happy to see these flowers decorating her salon. The next week I got a few orders for more flowers as clients wanted to buy. So this is how my flower business has started. Obviously it's not a fortune, but it's a good way to find good homes to flowers and also make some money. That money is going into a piggy bank (money box) and one day I'm going to buy something with the money. Is this good enough? :)

Nearly 235 Hive saved in 20 weeks!

That's impressive. 😊

Thanks for the EDS tokens. That was super lucky! 😍

did you pick up a little Bitcoin this week?

I did. But it was all over the place. When we had our little chat I was happy I'd bought the dip but then I hadn't because it went down further.

Then there was the Elon Musk tweet and it went down again and I ended up buying twice because I had 2 limit orders that got filled that had been sitting there for weeks.

And the I bought again, by accident, at a higher price than I would have chosen to. I was trying to compare the price on Coinbase Pro with the price on Crypto.com and I must have clicked the buy button by mistake.

We're only talking tiny amounts but I've eaten further into this month's dollar cost averaging budget that I should have.

If the price stays low I'm still going to do my Sunday buy tomorrow though. In the big scheme of things this might be the cheapest it gets.

On the other hand Eth may take over and BTC may crash. 😂

I really could do with setting a long-term target.

Target for how much you want to spend or how much BTC you want to buy?

Good question. 😁

How much I want to buy. I have a budget for how much I want to spend but it's just finger in the air stuff.

I want to create a base line with current figures that I can play around with. I want to know how much I would need to have in order to produce a certain return if I staked it.

Obviously there are lots of moving parts there but, at the moment, I have absolutely no idea what return I could get on what I currently have and how much that has to increase to get to a specific income figure.

Okay - are you talking about more than BTC now?
I was thinking about a similar thing this morning, based on capital gains tax thresholds.
It looks like the first £12,300 each year is tax-free, I was thinking about working on £1,000 a month. For growth I was thinking about using 20% a year as an average/baseline, setting some targets based on that and then monitoring what happens. So many variables, though!

are you talking about more than BTC now?

No really. I'm probably going to include the other tokens I hold in the spreadsheet but BTC is really my focus. The other tokens will be small returns, I'm guessing, compared to BTC.

on capital gains tax thresholds

Yep. The CGT threshold was what I had in mind when I said "to produce a certain return".

I'm curious as to what figures I need to produce that.

I'm currently working with about £500 a month but no idea what return that will bring and, as I mentioned, in my original comment I'm a bit all over the place with it.

I was going to be ultra conservative and go for 5% return but the videos I've watched today point out the BTC has grown on average 200% per year in the last 10 years. 😂

Also, there a whole 'nother aspect of borrowing against BTC which I'm starting to get my head around.

So many possible ways to go.

But, first things first, I'm going to work on a basic spreadsheet this week. I'm happy to share it with you if/when I get that far. 😁

Nice progress report. Fun to keep seeing the EDS grow. I love to keep stacking them while everything is cheap because someday I think most of the tokens in Hive will be worth quite a bit more than they are now.

As for "savings" tips.....the best thing I've ever figured out is for saving time. And you don't really save any...but it feels like it. Everyone has those jobs they hate doing. It could be laundry, it might be cleaning a particular room, maybe cleaning the blinds, mowing a particular section of your yard, trimming hedges, cleaning the garage, whatever it is. My single best tip (and this especially applies to those of us who occasionally tip back a few too many beverages) is.....drumroll please......wait for it......lol......here it comes......when you feel like shit, whether it be because you're hungover, or stressed, or under the weather, DO THOSE JOBS YOU HATE. Think about it, you already hate life during those times. You're going to feel horrible no matter what you do anyway. Instead of laying around bemoaning your fate, get up and do one or more of those jobs you hate. You won't feel any worse. And, you'll get something positive done that's been hanging over your head. That's what I do. Whenever I overextend my fun a little bit (it doesn't happen too often, but it does happen) I get up the next day and tackle a job in the yard I loathe doing. Then, when I finally start to feel better, I get to look back and see that I actually accomplished something I did NOT want to do. So, I turn a negative into a positive. Like I said, I'm already hating life. This at least gives me something positive to take out of it. Plus, it teaches me NOT to overextend myself because I know the penalty is going to suck. lol

That's all I've got. Hopefully it helps someone out there. I do have to say, it really is quite pleasing to realize I've completed a task even though I was miserable while doing it. I was miserable anyway. So, might as well get something miserable off my to-do list.

That's a cool tip, it means that when you are feeling good, you can put your energy into life and other money savings, because the miserable jobs are all done and not weighing on your mind!

This one is easy peasy - write a comment below with your favourite way to make household savings - that's any tip to do with food (including growing and storage), cooking or cleaning and laundry. That's all.

For me, my favorite way of saving is obviously to put down anything that isn't an exact necessity (food and etc) on a list. When I come back a few days later, if I still believe I need it then I buy it. This stops me from any impulse buying anything I don't need because I felt like it that day.

Hello @eddie-earner and @shanibeer

First, I missed the airdrop because I only have 6 LBI to date.
Second, I bought btc in the dip.

For the LBI Challenge - 5 LBI giveaway for hot savings tips!

I live on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Each year we experience hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe flooding events.

Here's my tip for buying in bulk, sharing with the family, and saving during price hikes like the ones we are seeing now on produce, meat, and dairy.

Stocked Pantry
I have 1 upright freezer; 1 refrigerator freezer; and 1 side-by-side full size-refrigerator freezer.

I buy meat and veggies in bulk and freeze in 2-person size portions.

20210515_124009.jpg

I purchase in bulk from our nearby Costco or Sam's Club. These are large quantity outlets stores that require a membership to purchase. This is perfect for me and my family because the Hurricane Season is only 2 weeks away. It starts on June 1 and ends November 30. That's a long time to possibly experience one of the events mentioned above. It's not IF it's going to happen, but when during that time frame.

My suggestion is to BE PREPARED. And that is exactly what I've done these past 20 years. I store up all the recommended hurricane supplies in my bug-out-bag and have plenty of the following in my pantry:

20210515_123811.jpg

20210515_123848.jpg

20210515_123744.jpg

20210515_123907.jpg

It not only keeps me and my immediate family prepared, but also my extended family, friends, and giveaways to my favorite local Food Bank. When the price of food and staples surge, I don't stress about it because my pantry is always full.

Not only do I utilize Manufacturer COUPONS faithfully, I buy sale items and stock up. My granddaughter has enough Macaroni and Cheese (her favorite food) to last her for a year.

Large Generator.
This one-time cost item has helped me tremendously. It keeps my frozen foods from spoiling AFTER the weather event.

Hello @justclickindiva, thank you for your fabulous photo comment!

One of the things that I love with Hive is the insights it provides into other people's lives in other parts of the world. We've had one hurricane in living memory here, in 1987, and like most poor weather we get in the UK, we weren't prepared for it. (Actually, I slept right through it and woke to a silent world, with trees torn down, power supplies cut and buildings with the roof blown off. I was one of the few people who made it into work, where I was a runner for the day, running up and down eight floors with paper messages because we only had one working telephone in the building).

I like the way you are stewarding food and supplies against price hikes and the demands of the environment and the generator to stop food spoiling after the event is inspired. That's surely saving and investing, isn't it?

Hello @eddie-earner and @shanibeer Week 20 is here and we're still saving. Here's my Saturday Savers Club report for the week:

https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@justclickindiva/week-20-participation-a-small-but-significant-milestone-or-saturday-savers-club

Also, congratulations to @gillianpearce for your win in the WheelOfNames. Wow, lucky you to be drawn twice.

Also I'm happy to hear of @susie-saver's venturing into posting to earn rewards. I'll check out the actifit posts.

Yes, I did meet my goals for this week by continuing my 100 days backwards challenge and my forward savings.

I've found that by switching from one utility company or service to another, it's only temporary because they start off with a deep discount only to raise their rates after the promotion period of over. By the time they inch up little by little on the bill, you realize their prices are higher than the previous carrier or service provider. That has happened to me numerous times. What I try to do is to negotiate a good deal with the current carrier. I eliminate unwanted services if need be to reduce my monthly rates to an acceptable level.

Take care everyone and see you next week.

Hello @justclickindiva, wonderful progress as always, so great to have you with us! @susie-saver has hit an obstacle as the step-recording phone ended in the mop bucket last week. That will get sorted eventually, and the posts will be back.
I agree about the utility companies - it's not a one-time operation, it's something that needs regular review. I'd carefully made my decision this year and two weeks later the company went into administration! The UK authorities appointed another company to take on their customers and I have an even better deal fixed until September - that will be the time to check what's going on. I also belong to an energy savings club - it posts alerts when better deals become available and I can also prioritise green energy providers. With the house loan and the telecoms company, I did simply negotiate a better deal. I have learned the following phrases: "What's the best deal you can offer me today?" and "uh-huh, and that's the best online and offline deal available?". It seems unless you specifically ask for online or offline they weasel into giving you a deal that's not so good!

Hope susie-saver can get her steps back soon.

As far as negotiating deals, I've found that companies won't give you one unless you ask for it. I remember my electricity was out for a week. I automatically expected to receive credit for the outage. Nope. You have to call, prove your electricity was out, then wait until the next month while they research the situation. Ridiculous.

Yes, I've found that if you don't know what questions to ask, the deals will be left not on, but under the table, lolol.
