Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Saturday Savers Club with Susie-Saver!

SPI Giveaway for September NO-BUY Month

Every week during our September NO-BUY month we are going to have an SPI giveaway!

Last week, the giveaway was for your top tips for low-cost or no-cost leisure activities for NO-BUY month. The winners this week are @phoenixwren and @justclickindiva. Congratulations! We also had ideas from @jfang003 and @metzli mentioned letting her children forage in the fridge 😁 - another great way of getting the family involved! Check last week's comments for everyone's ideas!

Our tip last week was how to avoid temptation ... this week for the SPI giveaway we are looking for all your ideas about what to do instead of shopping (that includes online shopping, too) - what to do with all that extra time you are not spending going into town or the mall or the retail park or browsing the internet?

Have you ever considered how much time during the year you spend shopping or thinking about shopping or browsing? Are there other things that you enjoy about shopping - maybe getting out of the house, meeting people, having a coffee - in addition to buying? Are there other ways you could enjoy those things without going shopping and, ideally, spending no or little money? What about all that time saved in the course of a year by not shopping ... how might you spend that?

What ideas do you have? Let us know in the comments for a chance to win SPI!

October Side-Gig Month - LBI Giveaway!

Everyone likes to have a little side hustle, don't they? Something you enjoy doing and you make a little money? Next month, we're going to be exploring all the little side gigs we can do to help boost our savings. So start gathering your ideas for next month's giveaways!

Thank you for taking part in Saturday Savers Club, everyone!

What's been happening in your world this week? anything exciting or fun? Tell us in the comments - you could win some EDS tokens 😁.

More about EDS tokens

EDS tokens are a low-risk income token, ideal for people who want to save. There were only 20,000 originally and they were all sold at 1 Hive each, with guaranteed earnings of 12% each year. You can now acquire EDS tokens through the EDS Miner token.

Earnings come from powering up and leasing out the Hive that came from selling the tokens, plus earnings from posts and comments each week. EDS pays out every Monday evening. Last week the pay out was equivalent to 23%.

618 EDS Miner tokens left (also some bargains at 9 Hive).

Back to business ...

We're going to be here every Saturday through the year growing a little savings honey pot, if you have plans for saving or getting to a different place this time next year - maybe $5 Hive by the end of the year 🤑?

Whatever it is, stick with Susie Saver through the year and we'll get there. Along the way, we'll share lots of tips and tricks for saving and how to get the knack of making your money work for you and not the other way round.

Let's Get Started

saturday_savers_club.jpg

We're using the 365 Penny A Day Challenge framework for the Saturday Savers Club. We're aiming to save £667 worth of pennies by the end of the year.

Penny a Day Tracker Sheet

Right click on the image, save it to your computer and then print it out.

Okay, let's check in ...

1. Check Progress

Each week, we're going to check in through this post and see where we are up to. Our target for today, 18 September, was 18.06p. Next week, we'll be saving 18.55p and by Saturday we'll have saved 359.23p (that's 35,923p just compounding a penny a day)! 😁.

Each week, I'll be buying Hive for @susie-saver's account with the pennies we've saved.

Here's this week's results - 18.06p buys 23.33 Hive.
908 Hive saved in 36 weeks (808 Hive powered up, the remainder invested in EDS and EDSM)! Plus we're earning 3.22% inflation on powered up Hive, 20% on EDSM, 23% on EDS tokens and a little on curating and posting!

@susie-saver has powered this week's savings; she's also been voting following a curation trail. She's reached her first milestones of 530HP and Minnow status. Her next goal is 1,000HP. She's already at 808HP - what's your prediction for when she will reach 1,000HP? Tell us in the comments!

How much did you save this week? Did you meet your target? Or did you save even more?

Being accountable to another person or a group is a great way to motivate yourself to save (or anything you want to achieve). Of course, you need the right kind of people around you - ones that think what you're trying to do is worth doing ... or at least fun 😁.

Sign up here with us to start your savings journey:

2. The Golden Pig Tip

saturday savers club.jpg

Every week, we're going to share a Golden Pig Tip for saving. By the time you've tried them all you'll have £670 saved.

This Week's Golden Pig Tip

This week's Golden Pig Tip for September NO-BUY month:

Remember to allow for treats and the things that make life worth living!
NO-BUY is actually about planned buying, about budgeting so that you use your money, however much or little you have, wisely. I mentioned Cinzia DuBois before - she always said she couldn't save because she earned so little. Then one year, she earned twice as much as the previous year and yet ... no savings. This led her to start thinking about what was going on and, importantly, what was her relationship to money?

The NO-BUY month includes allowable expenses - not just bills and essentials, but other things that are important to your well-being, like having an occasional coffee with friends, or going to a film or theatre performance, or an outing or taking up a learning opportunity.

So how do you manage controlling your spending? One way is to have a small budget for the things you enjoy and which contribute to your well-being. I have a one book a month subscription with Audible. I really enjoy choosing which book I am going to buy each month. Sometimes, I've seen a review and I know exactly what I want, other times I savour browsing, and other times still, I re-visit favourite authors.

Which treats and contributions to your well-being do you budget for? How do you manage contingency spending - those times when life is super-busy or you're having a couple of off-days and a take out is a life-saver? Let us know in the comments.

September NO-BUY Challenge

How's your month going? Have you worked out your list of buys and no-buys? Anything that hasn't worked 😁? Learned any useful tips for saving money? Let us know in the comments 🙂.

And today is always a good day to start saving - you can start on Day 1 or make up the first thirty-eight weeks (or join the Autumn Challenge) to catch up with @susie-saver.

That's it for this week. Hope you've enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you next Saturday with progress so far and our next Golden Pig tip.

Hello @bearmol, good to see you and thank you for sharing your posts - always good to keep up with Saturday Savers members 😁.

Love the way your HP is steadily growing, congratulations on all your work towards it, 1,000HP by the year end is a great goal to have 😍.

Congratulations to the winners. If you are trying to make some kind of positive change right here , you are a winner too. I haven’t started a new 500 yen coin savings yet. I’m awaiting returns on the first set which should be due in a couple weeks. I’ve done much better this week in not buying the things I said I wouldn’t. I stopped by the colonel and got that chicken only once. I try to push straight home from work so I avoid the entertainment spending. This is a long holiday weekend but I plan to stay in - nothing to spend on in the house 😂. Let’s keep pushing towards our goals. Have a great week everyone.

Hello @missaj. Each week can be a challenge in bypassing the fast food restaurants. But as @shanibeer said, don't deny yourself completely. Include in your weekly budget a dine out or take out item. I reduced mine to 1 per week. That's a huge reduction in that I'm used to getting take out at least 3 or 4 times a week. Although I try to stick to healthy restaurants. It was just not wanting to cook. This month, I've slowed down quite a bit and cooked instead of ordering take out.

Hello @shanibeer and all Saturday Savers Club members. Here's my Week 36 progress report:

https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@justclickindiva/week-38-cant-believe-im-14-weeks-away-from-completing-my-365-penny-a-day-challenge-and-week-6-of-autumn-savings-challenge-or-s

My week went according to plans.

I purchased on discount 5 EDSM and staked them.

I also made a an investment in Splinterlands.

My savings is going well as I love the Autumn Savings. I just make weekly transfers of the scheduled amounts.

It was a pleasure providing no and low-cost ways to have family fun. I've used those in the past and they work for the entire family. Thanks @shanibeer for the prize. Also, congratulations to #phoenixwren; @jfang003; and @metzli for your tips.

Congratulations to @bearmol and @bashadow for winning in the Wheel of Names.

Thank you, I hope maybe one of those discounted EDSM's will still be there tomorrow and that I receive enough SPS to sell and buy one. I know I reached my goal for them, but another one would be nice.

You can never have too many. Hope some are still available. I was luck to have been able to purchase. I missed the last discounted ones.

Good luck.

Hehe, snapped up those discount miners, well done 😁.
The Autumn savings are a nice little bonus, aren't they? A little something on the side for a rainy (or sunny) day. Thank you for all your great tips. I think you're going to like next month's theme!
We were a beach family, too, that's one of my enduring memories of childhood, long summer days at the beach from first thing in the morning until dusk. Never had any trouble sleeping either.
In London, we lived near the open air Lido with free entry before 1pm and for infants. I was sent up early with any sisters who could walk that far (it changed every year), and my mum came later with the pram piled with the toddlers and baby. She had one of those big old-fashioned baby carriages (they had to open the side gate for her) that could hold several small children, swimming things, baby essentials and the packed lunch.

Sounds like a wonderful time with all the family. And you're right. The kids are worn out by the time you return home. I remember my kids falling asleep in the car. They wanted to crawl straight away into bed without washing the sand off every part of their bodies.

Free, fun time. There's nothing better.

I appreciated pulling together my list of places and things to do. They saved us lots of money when you have more than one child. You have to find free or low-cost activities, else you'd never be able to go anywhere.

Good to see you @ericburgoyne, hope all is going well for you and Sharon 😍.
We are finally over-run with tomatoes! We're eating them everyday, they are delicious! As they start to turn pink, I'm bringing them in from the garden and setting in the front windows to finish ripening. They get a lot of love!
But I'm definitely planning strawberries for next year!

Great to hear you are having a good harvest of tomatoes. Sharon goes to rehab on Monday so things are looking up. Our strawberries have slowed down but I still have a few every other day or so, would like to have more plants next year but not sure if we have the space. Have a great week.

First thank you to the lucky wheel spinner and landing on my name. It is always fun to win a chance lottery.

I hope to be able to take advantage of the discounted EDSM price, but wont really know until Sunday when I cash out my SPS from splinterlands.

So far doing pretty good not buying into any new tokens. I ahve my goal of 10 EDSM, and was planing on boosting my SPI, but with the discounted EDSM, it will depend when I have the funds available and if EDSM are still discounted.

Yay! 😍 Like the way your plans can vary depending on opportunity. You're stacking nicely! Remember you can aim to increase your SPI through taking part in the Saturday Saver Challenges. Have a look at the post to see if you have any tips you could offer.

Oh I didn't realize EDSM was on sale for cheap. I decided to buy another 1 and double my position while dropping my average cost.

Thank you for the SPI and congrats to the Wheel of Names winners!

I am still hanging on with the savings account, but almost pulled it twice this week for cat emergencies. It's still there though, so - one month down. Haven't bought any more EDS until I know that I've got enough for rent this month.

Ah, if I could buy a winning lotto ticket, that would be nice.

So good to hear and glad everyone survived the cat emergencies. A month already, that's good to see 😍. Good plan to budget for essentials first.

Ah, lotto. Somehow I never think of that as a ticket to anywhere 😂. I was in a syndicate at work for eighteen months and we won nothing!

Ha ha ha ha. Yeah I almost never play. Probably every couple of years I buy a ticket. 😂 My dad had a few smaller winning tickets (like, 2 or 3 thousand dollars) when I was a kid, but in truth he probably spent more than that on tickets throughout his life.

Oh, man, I really do spend a lot of time shopping.

Like, lots of time.

Since I started ordering meal boxes and online groceries I save myself lots and lots of time. I don't really do anything with the extra time, as it wasn't really time that I had to spend anyway.

I would go grab groceries after the kids got out of school and leave them in the car, all grumpy and mad. Or try to go while they were in school and around the babies nap schedule (and be all grumpy and mad cause there isn't really enough time).

Now I just come home and stay home and since I LOVE my home, its a nice change.

I look forward to next months challenge. I hope it goes beyond "sell your old stuff" lol.

Some ideas I have used in the past were Etsy Shops, "Happy Mail Project", and selling Mexican Candy when I lived in the Bay Area where it wasn't readily accessible.

My son wants to start a lemonade stand which I happen to think is a horrible idea. I do live close to a church so if he insists, I might send him to sell it by the church.

I really would like to look into a project him and I can do together, like painting numbers on the sidewalks in front of houses to make it easier for emergency workers to find your house, or mowing neighbors lawns.

The old "lemonade stand". It's a great experience. I feel it teaches children that selling and making money is not as easy as they think.

I hadn't thought of it that way - I'd only thought about what an inconvenience it was for me - I see now that it would be a huge inconvenience for him too...

Glad you are finding ways that are working for you.

What's the Happy Mail project?

We send mail to people.

We call it Happy Mail because they are well wishes and such with stickers and nice messages.

Okay, I understand the Happy bit, but where do you earn anything? Are you sending them on behalf of other people who pay you? Or does it work some other way? 🤑

avatar

I was selling them for 2.50 - 5.00 and all I was paying for was postage because we used mostly upcycled stuff.

Our time was well spent because kids were learning about mail routes and such.

Definitely a side gig for pocket money and not a mortgage payer.

I mused here about my shopping patterns.

This challenge really has me thinking about my spending.

Really interesting ... My shopping patterns changed a few years ago from a regular "big shop" to moving to deliveries from small local suppliers (and fresh milk in returnable glass bottles). I find now that I really dislike going into large supermarkets, all of them (and some of the smaller ones) have a distinct smell that I find really unpleasant, as well as the noise and crush of people. I stopped parking in the supermarket car park, too frantic!
I've noticed that I sometimes buy products that are more expensive than in a large supermarket, but I'm spending far less overall. I like the "saving" items to next week to hit the weekly threshold, too, great idea!

Haha I actually thought about this as my girlfriend told me yesterday that she has a day off and is going shopping with a friend. Guess it's really a form of leisure for some people and passed on from generation on generation as something fun to do. Personally, I don't really like shopping much, sure if I need some new clothes I'll go and buy clothes, either in the shop or online. But not really making it "a day". I do feel most women enjoy this more than men though, that might be a thing.

So for things I'd rather do than shopping:

  • see some nature, go for a walk or hike
  • sports
  • gaming (splinterlands if you want to earn some instead of spend :-P)
  • board game with friends
  • build something, a DIY project
  • use the shopping money to buy HE tokens or splinterlands cards instead

I really agree on how much time it saves when you don't have to go shopping often or for hours at a time. When I find a brand I like and know the size I need it really helps to find what I need quickly.

Shopping as a day out was a new idea to me, too! I like an occasional trip into town, but it's more for the outing than browsing or if I want to look at a specific thing. The main thing is a cup of tea in one of the cafes!
Lots of great ideas in your list, thank you for taking part 😍

Hello @shanibeer. What I do instead of going shopping is to go clean out my closets and pantries for items to give to those in need. Once I start looking at all the items I have in both places, it reminds me that I don't need to accumulate anything else. I usually find items I haven't seen in a while in both places.

During our recent weather events, our local Food Bank is in dire needs of non-perishable foods. Also, shelters that house flooding victims in addition to regular needs of families, are in desperate need of all type of clothing, toiletries, and different items for children's toys. I just scour the house and make ready several boxes of each items for distribution later. Each week, I add to the box after washing items for donation.

That's a great idea for sharing wealth and things we don't need any more. I like the idea of having boxes ready to receive your finds as you going about what you are doing. I could add a box or two next to my re-cycling box.
Thank you for your ideas 😍
