(ESP-ENG) 1° de Mayo, Celebración o Conmemoración? // 1° May Day, Celebration or Commemoration?

It is a pleasure to greet you my friends readers. This time I took the time to reflect a little and decided to write a little about it, I have always thought that only we have the decision to change things, keep them or go backwards as a society, although it sounds cliché we are the generation of the middle, we are the improvement of our parents, but at the same time those who will form the future generations and for that responsibility we should take a look at the past and make it better for the future.

This thought is due to live in two different cultures but very equal at the same time and for this the example of the International Workers Day (May 1st); In Venezuela it is important due to several factors, the current government (more than 20 years with the same chaotic system) and those before it, that is to say before Chavez, waited until that date to make the expected increase in the minimum wage and from there the increases in the different private companies started, It was also important because it was a holiday and if it fell on a weekend it was the perfect opportunity to go on a trip, to the beach or the mountains, it was a mini-vacation, to enjoy with friends or family. Or it was simply the opportunity to forget about work and rest and enjoy those days.

In Argentina, both in Salta (province) and in the City of Buenos Aires (capital), things are a little different at the governmental level since here there is no regime, so let's say that in a certain way there is democracy, the government of the day does not wait until that date to increase the minimum wage since they have a plan of salary adjustments three times a year in different months, the different companies, large, medium and small adjust their salaries according to the union to which they belong; however it is similar to my country of origin in terms of enjoying the holiday.

According to my analysis as a foreigner, the phenomenon of paying what the company decides regardless of whether it is below the minimum wage is due to the fact that there is no obligation in the labor law to have workers in white, complying with all the regulations of deductions and contributions to government institutions, so most of them have workers in black, that is to say, they pay in hand what they believe should be the salary of the worker and he/she has no benefits, no social security (health), much less prepaid (private insurance), no vacations, no payment corresponding to the Christmas bonus, and the same has no benefits whatsoever, They pay in hand what they believe should be the salary of the worker and the worker has no benefits at all, no social security (health) much less prepaid (private insurance), no vacation, no payment corresponding to the Christmas bonus, ie no labor rights, the legal is to work 8 hours a day and some can work more than 9 hours without being paid overtime or overtime are paid under the table in order not to comply with the provisions of the law for payment of overtime. All this leads me to think and investigate what happened on May 1st to become such an important day for workers, industries and politics?

Well, in short, it turns out that in the year 1886 several workers (more than 80,000) in the city of Chicago USA decided to go on a work stoppage on May 1st.UU decided to make a work stoppage on May 1 to demand the McCormick company to reduce the working hours from 16 hours a day to at least 8 hours a day and to improve working conditions because they worked in the worst conditions, this strike was not only joined by workers, but administrative staff, typographers, salesmen, journalists who saw a just cause, were several days of strike and work stoppage where many more workers joined (400.000 approx.), in different cities of the United States which caused up to 5,000 simultaneous strikes, being the one in Chicago the strongest and bloodiest since for several days the police murdered many of those who were on strike. Due to the pressure of the strike, the president at the time, Andrew Johnson, enacted a law to establish an 8-hour work day.

As a consequence of this repression, on the fifth day of the strike, a bomb was placed in the police station, which was called the Haymarket bombing. Due to all that happened in the month of June, 31 people were prosecuted for being the propellants of the demonstration, however, eight (8) were accused in the cruelest way, since one (1) was condemned to 15 years of hard labor, two (2) of them to life imprisonment and five (5) to death by hanging, called the "Martyrs of Chicago". In honor of these workers and the conflict, May 1st was decreed as International Workers' Day.

It is enough just to look for what happened on May 1st or why it is celebrated or why that day is the International Workers' Day to realize that it is a really sad day, because there were many deaths just to demand a human right, a labor right, today in different places and countries May 1st is a day to celebrate, to demand rights or improvements, to grant benefits at an economic level, to recognize the work of workers but for me it is really a day of absolute commemoration of the fallen and of gratitude, regardless that it has occurred in a country that is not mine but thanks to this revolt today we can say and demand that my working day is 8 hours a day and if I go to work more hours are fairly paid and appreciated because they are hours that are dedicated to a job, to a company, to the enrichment of an employer and not to your family, partner, children, pet, leisure or fun. For me, time is valuable and there must be a trade-off between work time and personal time, time for quality of life.

This year May 1st fell on a Sunday, from my window I could observe a somewhat cheerful march as they are mostly in Argentina that went to the main avenue of the city of Buenos Aires which is the 9 de Julio, they had flags of political parties and support for the current president, many said "there go the planeros" that is, who live on social plans, I do not judge because everyone has a way of seeing life, I only thought that some of them will know the real reason why they are leaving on a day like today or they only go to maintain some social assistance, in other places unions got together and made barbecue and gave choripán to "celebrate" the workers day, my opinion is that all these celebrations are purely political and citizens lend themselves to play the game to the government of the day, since the laws remain the same, there are no changes, no demands for improvements, there is only conformity and complaints, but no actions. My advice, read more, document ourselves more and demand as much as possible the improvements and benefits that will help future generations, do it for us and for those who come after us.

Thank you for reading me and I hope not to generate a political conflict, just create some reflection.
