[En-Es] Tradescantia zebrina (Zebrina pendula)

In my city Valencia, Carabobo state, there is a wonderful park where you can spend the day, either walking, riding a bicycle or simply sitting on the grass enjoying the trees, watching adults and children playing on the grass, surrounded by nature, and with the security of being under the care and surveillance of park rangers.

En mi ciudad Valencia, estado Carabobo, hay un parque maravilloso donde se puede pasar el día, bien sea caminando, manejando bicicleta o simplemente sentado en la grama disfrutando de los árboles ,viendo a grandes y chicos jugando en el césped, rodeados de naturaleza, y con la seguridad de estar bajo el cuidado y vigilancia de guardaparques.

This is the "Fernando Peñalver" park. It was precisely a park ranger who gave me a little piece of this plant, one day when we had enjoyed a different time with some of our children and were about to return home.

Se trata del parque "Fernando Peñalver". Fué precisamente un guardaparques el que me regaló un pedacito de esta planta, un día en que habíamos disfrutado con algunos de nuestros hijos de un rato diferente y nos disponíamos a regresar a casa.

It is the Tradescantia zebrina, an perennial herbaceous plant, from the same family as the commelinas, those wild blue flowers that are born spontaneously everywhere.

When I got home I planted it and it adapted easily. As I got to know her more, I marveled at how rare and extraordinarily beautiful she is, despite being so common and easy to grow.

It is a creeping weed that takes root in nodules. The color of its leaves ranges from green to purple and fuchsia with silver lines. The flower is born solitary at the base of the leaves, it is purple with only three petals and with white pistils and stamens. It has the same duration as the commelinas: about one day

Cuando investigué para hacer este post descubrí cosas aún más sorprendentes, como que es usada en las regiones de Chiapas y Tabasco, en México, para preparar bebidas refrescantes y con propiedades curativas.
Es una hierba rastrera que echa raíces en los nódulos. El color de sus hojas va de verde a morado y fucsia con líneas plateadas. La flor nace solitaria en la base de las hojas, es morada de sólo tres pétalos y con pistilos y estambres blancos. Tiene la misma duración de la commelinas: aproximadamente un día.

The plant contains secondary metabolites that are responsible for its anti-inflammatory and curative effect on the kidney, digestive system, and fertility, such as saponins, tannins, steroids, and flavonoids.
The color of the leaves changes as they age, turning magenta when they are about to wither.
It can be kept in a pot and as a ground cover, where it expands rapidly, especially if disturbed.
The sap of this plant can be irritating

La planta contiene metabólitos secundarios que son responsables de su efecto antiinflamatorio y curativo sobre el sistema renal, digestivo, y la fertilidad, tales como saponinas, taninos, esteroides y flavonoides.
El color de las hojas va cambiando a medida que envejecen, tornándose magenta cuando ya están por marchitarse.
Se puede tener en maceta y como cobertura de suelo, dónde se expande rápidamente, sobre todo si se le perturba.
La savia de esta planta puede ser irritante.

Tradescantia zebrina is known by many other names, such as "Man's love", "Panamanian", "Pamplinas" and owes its scientific name to its discoverer, researcher John Tradescant jr., who introduced it to Europe. The name "zebrina" comes from zebra, due to the presence of stripes on its leaves.
