Village Life On The Wall - Naïve Art At The Folk And Folk Art Museum

avatar

Centuries ago village life was very simple and different from what it is now. Working the fields to provide for the family took up most of their time and there were only a few occasions when they could relax and celebrate. Harvests were usually celebrated and religious events as well. There were grape harvest fests, cherry harvest fests, carnivals and so on. These events usually have been the topic of many artworks, painters for example have painted grain harvesting scenes.

When I was visiting the Folk and Folk Art Museum in Targu Mures, there was an exposition that enjoyed a lot. It was a naive art exposition with handmade wall decorations.

Naïve art is usually defined as visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). When this aesthetic is emulated by a trained artist, the result is sometimes called primitivism, pseudo-naïve art, or faux naïve art. source

The artist is making embroideries on canvas, using colorful wool. Embroideries on the wall were very popular in the part and I have seen quite many, but nothing like this.

This piece for example is featuring grain harvesting and threshing. Village people were usually self sufficient, growing their own food, so obviously it was an important event every year. Their livelihood was depending on getting a good harvest.

Another one featuring livestock on the pasture as breeding animals was also part of their life.

The family. Mother with two children in front of the house and obviously the flowers and birds can't be missing from the scene. In folk art that is a must.

This was the most interesting part of the collection. 8 pieces put together to get a big one that covers the whole wall.

The topic of the artwork is The Wedding and basically takes the visitor through the process. Back in those days the groom had to go to the girl's father and ask permission to merry the daughter, that's what you see up on the left. Next on the right is the engagement party. In the second row on the left there's the preparations, killing the pig and the chicken, next bringing the food and drinks to the wedding.

In the next row below there's the groom and bride, going to the wedding on a chariot, next there's the lunch at the wedding, then the party, with the newly wed dancing. The last one is quite funny as it features the couple's bedroom. The wedding night was a very big event as sexual contact before the wedding was forbidden back in those days.

It's interesting to note the traditional clothes wore by Hungarian in Transylvania and the embroidered cushions and cloths, as well as the painted earthenware.

I don't know about you but I loved this piece, even though naive art is not my no. 1 choice in art. As a needlework lover, I find these works really interesting. @crosheille, what do you think? Would you be able to create such artworks? I was thinking how I could make one but it's not easy, at last I don't think it is.

The characteristics of naïve art are an awkward relationship to the formal qualities of painting, especially not respecting the three rules of the perspective (such as defined by the Progressive Painters of the Renaissance):

  • Decrease of the size of objects proportionally with distance,
  • Muting of colors with distance,
  • Decrease of the precision of details with distance.

The results are:

  • Effects of perspective geometrically erroneous (awkward aspect of the works, children's drawings look, or medieval painting look, but the comparison stops there)
  • Strong use of pattern, unrefined color on all the plans of the composition, without enfeeblement in the background,
  • An equal accuracy brought to details, including those of the background which should be shaded off. source

Maybe one day, when I'll bored and will have nothing to do I'll try this naive art but right now it seems quite difficult for me, if not impossible.

What is interesting about this is the details. Look at the woman's dress, it's embroidered nicely as in real life, as well as the wooden spoon.

Even the cushions are embroidered with the typical Transylvanian motifs.

Another snippet of the Big Family's life. That is the title of this piece.

What I loved about the museum is the wide range of folk costumes, objects used centuries ago, artifacts used during the war and folk art. This naive art expo is temporary, but I bet there are others to come, just as interesting as this one.

I wanted to share this with you as some may have never seen such art. I can't get it out of my head and one day I'm going to try it out. Good thing I have a bunch of photos to use as guidance.

Wow this type of art is truly a painting of needlework! I think it’s quite intriguing and unique. I’m gonna be honest and say I don’t know if I would have the patience to complete something like this. It’s like reading a whole life’s story in needle art. Maybe I’d complete just one scene lol. 😄

Thanks for sharing this and tagging me. I wonder what some of the other embroidery workers think about these masterpieces? @bunnysneedle @ratna9864 @tali72

I agree with you on that, it is really painting by needle if we can say that.

Patience is a factor that always determines how your artwork it's going to turn out. At the moment I'm really attracted to it but I'm not sure if I'll ever have the time to spend on a work like that. There will always be something more urgent and after some time I may lose interest.

That is what would be my biggest challenge…losing interest. After working on something for so long I’m ready to move onto the next. I am so guilty of having tons of WIP that I can’t even find half of them now. 😅
