2022 Olympics roundup: how did my country perform?

The 2022 winter Olympics have been closed earlier today. Although I couldn't watch much of the sports, because of the time difference and work, it were two historical weeks once again. The result of the games can be found in the medal table below:

As ever so often, Norway is on top of the table. Impressive how a country of just over 5 million people can rule the rest of the world like this. Are they doing something differently than other countries or are they just lucky with their geographical location and the huge amounts of money they can invest thanks to the oil industry?

Dutch performance

Looking at my own country, The Netherlands, it can be said that we had a good Olympiad. 8 times gold, just as in Sochi and Pyongchang, and 9 silver/bronze medals. With a sixth place, just below the USA and above Alp countries Austria and Switzerland, we could be proud of ourselves. Still there was a lot to improve however. The team distances of the speed skating were rather disappointing and it is still a shame that only one medal came from a non-skating (long- or shorttrack) competition. The fact that we got the first medal in the luge track (bronze at the womens Skeleton), was a positive milestone. Let's hope that Milan 2026 will bring us more of those unexpected medals!
