Initiative. Human Culture. Week 16: "Needs vs. Wants".

Greetings friends of the community, it is something very pleasing to be able to tell you that every day we are more and more who integrate this community, with a total of 10 participations until this moment we have finished week nr. 15 and we open the way for a new thematic to reflect. We are grateful to all those who have participated since they have presented us with very pleasant reflections to read and with very interesting visions. Now, before leaving you here below the entries to the initiative, we wanted to comment that although the initiatives have a closing date, it does not mean that if you have not participated for some reason you can not do it at another time.

The initiatives are always open for anyone who wants to participate, we do it weekly to give dynamism to the community, but if you just arrived to the community and want to participate in a past initiative you can do it. Here are the entries for week number 15.

As you have appreciated in the title, this time we want to encourage a reflection that is no less than interesting, basically it consists of confronting the basic needs against the created desires.

The famous Athenian philosopher Socrates said that an unexamined life is not worth living, so today we are proposing a very particular reflection on weighing the needs and desires in us, in our lives and in our context. Tell us what do you think is the one thing that seems to have the most impetus in you? But, in case you are not very clear on the issue of needs and wants, we have taken the time to explain it briefly, just to clarify and shed some light, and then you can do a deeper investigation if you need to.

Needs are those things that are inalienable in life, they are everything essential and of vital importance such as eating, sleeping or sex, they are biological needs, but they are not the only ones, there are also social needs such as communication or psychological needs.
In short, there is a wide variety of needs, but, in front of them, there are desires, which seem to be juxtaposed and there is a great debate between one and the other because of the delimitation of desires and needs.

The intellectual and economist Manfred Max Neef expands this topic in an interesting way, explaining human needs as being, having, doing and being in terms of subsistence, protection, affection, leisure, participation and others, on the other hand he explains that the satisfiers are those economic and non-economic goods that we use to satisfy our basic needs, for example a human need is communication, while the satisfier or human desire is a mobile phone (as a material good to satisfy the need to relate or interact), hence we can take a point of reference between the need against the desires.

We would love to open the debate on this topic so common and interesting in our daily lives, where you can outline contributions on how these concepts are differentiated, managing to reflect on what we want and need to live the life we want or those who made us believe that we should live outside of desires based on having more and more things, in this sense our main purpose is to generate critical thinking towards the most authentic way to live a full and conscious life between what we need or want to satisfy us and realise at what point we have confused these ideas.

As every week the initiative is totally free, you don't have to answer anything specific, what we have written as generative questions and proposals, are just ideas to help you orient yourself and decide what to contribute to this initiative.

The rules for the initiative are the same for each week:

  • Post with no less than 500 words per language.
  • If you do it in video format with a minimum length of 3 minutes, use 3Speak.
  • Make sure you use good spelling.
  • Use the hashtags #humanitas and #humanculture.
  • Comment on other entries.
  • Invite at least one other person on the platform to participate in the initiative.

Please remember:

We seek originality and creativity, therefore under no circumstances do we admit plagiarism, we want to promote critical thinking and healthy debate, during the last few weeks we have managed to demonstrate that as a community we can address issues that may be controversial in principle, or tend towards the polemic, but that if we approach them with criteria, with discursive responsibility and above all empathy and respect, there is no need to polemicise points of view, always with criteria and willingness of spirit we can create deep and reflective dialogues collaborating in the construction of knowledge on the web3.

Thank you for your time.

This week's initiative has been proposed by the moderators @luvilozada and @filoriologo .
