Today's Market Friday took me to a local automobile dismantling center in Port Harcourt City, Nigeria. It'll amaze you that this automobile dismantling center at the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt has been existing for over two decades now and has been a means of survival to many jobless youths in the area.

Why is the dismantling center created
There are two different reasons why the center war created and it should be noted that it's a private business rather than a government owned business.

  • The first purpose is to sell the good parts to local car dealers who inturn use them to sell to those who needs them.
  • For recycling materials. Most of the parts of the condemned automobile are made of metals and could be recycled into other useful items for domestic and industrial uses.

What is the center created for?
One of the major reason for creating the scrap center apart from dismantling scraps from the automobile, is for hustling for young men within the area.

Young men come to the center on a daily basis and wait for owners of condemned vehicles to bring them in order for them to be dismantled into scraps. The process of dismantling the cars will attract a certain amount of money for both the one dismantling the car and the owner of the center.

How much does an individual make on a daily basis
There's isn't any fixed price for dismantling a car. This is because the cars are of different sizes. Also, people pay according to how they bargained.

At least an individual goes home with more than N10,000, which is about $24.09. It should be noted that, this isn't a fixed amount as also depends on the number of vehicles that come to the center on a daily basis. There are some days that they don't have any vehicle in the center, but it's very rare for this to happen.

What kind of vehicles come to the center
Most of the cars that comes to the center are cars that have been involved in accident that's beyond repairs or the owner doesn't want to spend much money to repair an old car.

It should be noted that, there are parts that are kept for the owner to sell, most especially the heavy metal parts and the engine.

To visit the automobile dismantling center in Port Harcourt City, you can come to Emole street Mile II Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Thank you!

I must say that this is an interesting #MarketFriday post. I like that you thought outside the box, so few do a traditional market and have opted for something with a little more creativity, like the automobile dismantling center. It is a nice way for unemployed young people to make some money.

I am familiar with these centers as they have them here, but some of them are known as junkyards- full of cars and you go in and pull it out yourself. :) Anyway, this was a cool #MarketFriday! Thanks for joining us!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
