The reason why I wasn't allowed to cook again. Theinkwell Nonfiction contest #31

Living with my Uncle was a blessing because I just move to a new state where the accommodation fee was so high. My uncle offer to help me settle down till I get my place which I was very happy about, imagine getting free food and a place to rest without paying.

After I settled down well enough, his wife is always doing cooking and most of the chores which doesn't sit well with me so I told her I can help her with some works and cooking. She asked if I could cook and i starting making boast of my cooking skills.

Just three weeks into their home she traveled and asked me to always prepare food for my uncle before he gets back from work which I was happy about. One this faithful day I decided to cook beans porridge since it's been a while I ate it.

After putting the beans on fire (the beans was inside the pot), I went to the sitting room to watch the TV. I forgot about the food, you know there is a way that if your food is burning and you are watching TV you would not know because the burnt smell will get familiar with you.

I heard a knock on our door and it was the neighbor. "how can I help you sir?' and he was like "Are you cooking, there is something burning" it was then I perceive the burnt aroma of my beans. I rushed to the kitchen and switched off the gas. Oh God, will I cook another beans again?.

I scrap out the good part of the beans and open the windows and door for the burn smell to go out. I was trying too get raid of all evidence. I sprayed some air fresher of different type and my perfume to clear away my crime from the living room.

I put the good part of the food back in the pot and added the ingredient but the aroma was coming out with some burnt smell. "OH God, how will i escape this? was all i could think". I added extra season to help me get raid of the bad smell. After the food was ready, I acted like nothing was wrong and spray some more air fresher for some good home scent.

When my uncle got back, I am sure he could perceive the burnt smell but wasn't too sure because of all the perfume and air fresher I had sprayed.

After I had served him, he was like "Did you burn the food" I was like NO sir, probably the down part of the pot. The first taste gave me out. "This food isn't just smelling burnt but also taste burnt"

Even the air fresher and good smelling perfume couldn't cover my track.

I just remember that day again. It was such a heartbreaking day for me. Give me a minute to reminisce a bit. OK I am back

Since that day I wasn't allowed to cook and I always pay attention to the smell or scent coming from the kitchen when I am cooking for myself alone.

Oh tell me about it😂. I've been here numerous times till I got a nickname because of it😂. It I've changed. Your uncle didn't want to take the risk of his house burning down...wise man😂

Almost all of us have that kind of memory, I have one too. And it is not pleasent but I can say you are lucky that you didn't burn the kitchen unlike me.

I am happy that you ended up well. I hope your uncle didn't get mad at you. 💫🖤

That has happened to me too while watching one of my K-drama series, and it wasn't a good one cause we ended up sleeping on an empty stomach. Yours was good because you still had the better part left. Nice read

It's understandable how forgetting about the beans on the stove can lead to a burnt aroma filling the kitchen. It's unfortunate that your attempt to cover up the smell with air freshener and perfume didn't work as well as you hoped. Sometimes, certain scents can be quite persistent lol😅😅

😂😂😂... Yeah... Some certain scent can be very persistent.. Even with air fresher.. It will need more than that and with a lot of fresh air for the smell to go.

This wasn't an unusual incident, but it's amazing that you had an unburnt portion to serve. Unfortunately, the burnt food is something that permeates the room and is difficult to disguise.
